Working in today’s society has changed in the last few decades. The economy and technology are the main reasons for this change. The type of job and environment where one works has also changed. The fact that many people work from home via the internet has drastically changed the workforce and the environment surrounding it. With this change have come new demands, expectations, and opportunities for employers. Everyone deals with these demands differently, affecting the employee’s quality of life and job satisfaction. With concerns of job security many can suddenly find themselves out of work and financially in debt. Macinonis (2010) the book states: Perhaps the biggest difference in the workplace of the twenty-first century is the types of skills that work demands. A century ago, people had to develop the industrial skills needed for making things; today, people in the postindustrial economy must develop literacy skills needed to created and manipulate symbols (words, ideas, music, and computer code). (pg. 304, para. 4) The symbolic interaction view focuses primarily on the individual and how they perceive themselves in the work place or job market. Social stratification and technology also play a part in this issue. What a person does for a living reflects on how that person see’s their life. If a person works at a dull mundane or repetitious job, their views on their personal life may be similar. Those working in an exciting and progressive field may see their life reflecting this. This is not to say one is better than the other, both types of job are needed within society. Often education plays an enormous role in one’s career choice. Many skilled trades often have traits at both ends of the spectrum, offering job satisfaction with moments of frustration with work. This is often related to education and technology. Technology advances has been most dramatic in clerical and service work, which has led to the deskilling of labor. The basic job of this service work is to handle, maintain and process information. Improvements such as the computer, voice recognition software and automation processes have led to the deskilling of this service work. As a result of this technology people are now facing the threat of losing their job because a process has been changed, upgraded or eliminated.
In this essay, I will assess the strengths and limitations of unstructured interviews for investigating the effect of material deprivation on educational achievement by using Item B and my own knowledge. Material deprivation is the idea that a lack of money leads to disadvantages, Item B gives an example of ‘low household income, poor housing and a lack of work space in the home.’
According to Griffiths & et. al (2015), symbolic interactionism is a micro-level theory that focuses on the relationships among individuals within a society. Symbolic interactionism theory focuses on the way individuals communicate and interact with one another, which help them understand their environment and society. An example of symbolic interactionism can be viewed by what kind of mobile phone you have, what car you drive, or where you went to college. These are all types of symbols that our society uses to symbolize a person status or wealth. Another example is the social networking website FaceBook, which can serve as an online platform for users to create and spread their "symbolic" group with like minded individuals that view the world from the same lens.

When describing the sociological implications of the modern economy and the workplace environment there are many subject to think about like: depend on the type of job, professional training, and level of occupational achievement and that person self of esteem and social approval.
