Working in today’s society has changed in the last few decades. The economy and technology are the main reasons for this change. The type of job and environment where one works has also changed. The fact that many people work from home via the internet has drastically changed the workforce and the environment surrounding it. With this change have come new demands, expectations, and opportunities for employers. Everyone deals with these demands differently, affecting the employee’s quality of life and job satisfaction. Though the job and office types and locations have changed over the years the need for job satisfaction has not. In today’s economy the job is not as stable as it used to be. With concerns of job security many can suddenly find themselves out of work and financially in debt. Macinonis (2010) the book states: Perhaps the biggest difference in the workplace of the twenty-first century is the types of skills that work demands. A century ago, people had to develop the industrial skills needed for making things; today, people in the postindustrial economy must develop literacy skills needed to created and manipulate symbols (words, ideas, music, and computer code). (pg. 304, para. 4) The symbolic interaction view focuses primarily on the individual and how they perceive themselves in the work place or job market. Social stratification and technology also play a part in this issue. What a person does for a living reflects on how that person see’s their life. If a person works at a dull mundane or repetitious job, their views on their personal life may be similar. Those working in an exciting and progressive field may see their life reflecting this. This is not to say one is better than the other, both types of job are needed within society. Often education plays an enormous role in one’s career choice. Many skilled trades often have traits at both ends of the spectrum, offering job satisfaction with moments of frustration with work. This is often related to education and technology.
