A) What makes these stories both potent and timeless, is their ability to illustrate moral truths and life lessons, such as vanity, overcoming obstacles in life, spiritual growth, and values, through the use of metaphors. In doing so, these stories enable people to learn a thing or two about themselves, such as aspirations and trepidation's. These stories have become successful at staying vivacious, despite times progression and the growth of diverse societies, by virtue of those retelling these primordial tales. B) When reading something in a literal fashion, you are applying words at their most basic sense and definition with strict meaning. In other words, there is no room for interpretation. However, when reading something as a metaphor,
Stories are alive, not in the sense they are human, but like us, change and grow. The most wonderful tale that we love as children has always been ever changing. Like Little Red Riding Hood. Which still holds onto the part of its purpose to warn children of dangers

“The Truth About Stories is that that’s all we are”.(King 2003,p. 2).Stories have a great importance as they make people more joyous and creative. Stories let the narrator to speak but he is not really the one who is speaking. The narrator retells the stories in merely same language but totally in different tone. These stories improve ones belief towards life. The narrator interacts with the listener through
Here we have come across one of the many wonders of story telling: Stories allow us to see things we might not have the audacity to see ourselves and to become things well beyond our own perceived potential. And so we turn to stories to fill our voids, to quench the fires of our hopes and dreams, to calm our restless spirits. We might choose security rather than spontaneity and comfort rather than jeopardy, but we are able to do so and remain sane only with promise of participation in something outside of ourselves.
I have always loved stories. Stories helped me see things in new ways, allowing me to take incredible risks with the safety net of vicarious action. In Francis Flaherty’s The Elements of Story, he stated, “Every story, even the driest, has a human face. Draw it well and put it on display, for to readers it is a mirror and a magnet (2009, p. 1).
In the Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer tells the story of a group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury, who engage in a tale-telling contest to pass the time. Besides watching the interactions between the characters, we get to read some of the tales the pilgrims tell. Storytelling plays a big part however As the pilgrims tell their stories, though, they turn out to be talking not just about fairytale people in far-off lands, but also about themselves and their society.Obviously, these stories are told for a particular purpose, to win a prize while teaching a lesson, however there are other purposes in storytelling aside from these. A lot of these purposes are very implicit and unnoticeable however, it really engages readers once these purposes have been discovered. Some of these unintended storytelling purposes include a primitive form of communication, self revelation, and engagement of our imagination.
Short stories are a great way of expressing and providing valuable life lessons. Stories such as The Gift of Magi, The Lottery and The Open Window are great examples that provide valuable life lessons. Firstly, The Gift of Magi interprets the lesson of showing love and being selfless. The love between Jim and Della is truly amazing that they sacrificed their personal valued belongings for a gift for one another. They both are too poor to get each other gifts so Della cut her hair and Jim sells his watch which are two really precious things for themselves for money. Della buys a watch chain for Jim and Jim buys a comb with the money they have from selling their belongings. When they give each other their gifts they realizes both the gifts are useless for each other as Jim has no watch for the
One of the oldest forms of literature is the fable. Aesop, the recognized Greek master of the form, is credited with redefining the genre (“Aesop’s Fables”). The fable itself is a brief narrative with animals as characters, in prose or verse. Human characters may be included, but are normally not used exclusively (Silkens 4). Many fables have an explicit educational purpose, with a moral being attached at the beginning or end of the story or through a character’s identification of the moral lesson (“Aesop” 583). Critic Pack Carnes argues that the fable has three primary characteristics: they follow a brief pattern, they contain a simple motif, and they act as a metaphor for a defined aspect of life (qtd. in “Aesop’s Fables”).
Furthermore, early world literature teaches the reader about life experiences whether the story is sad or full of joy. In addition to this, one can understand another person whole-heartedly through literature. For instance, in The Canterbury Tales the readers can feel the situation of the king Arthur when an ugly women wished the king to marry her. The readers can imagine that they can also do something new in the society just like Shahrazad saved other girls from being killed by her husband Shahrayar in The Thousand And One Nights. The readers can get influence from these stories. The readers can also get entertainment from early world literature. Many literary works especially stories have frame tales. The frame tale about the ox and donkey is full of entertainment to the readers. In that frame tale, the donkey told to ox not to plough the field, then the ox didn’t plough the field next day. After that, the donkey had to plough the field because their owners think that the ox is sick. From this frame tale the readers get entertainment as well as a good moral. The moral from this
They way stories are told may morph, but never will storytelling cease. From their people skills to their memories, there is no argument that storytellers possess boundless talent and intelligence. They were the first educators. And now, storytelling is a large part of everyday life. The news in the morning, the gossip throughout the day, the casual response to the casual “What’s up?” – It’s all a form of storytelling. Our lives are steeped in it. In almost every conversation a story is told. At every turn a story is born. So we all are storytellers, and the world is our audience, just waiting to hear the gospel leave our
Over the history of man, stories have been told in many fashions, but even through all that time some basic elements of storytelling hold true. For example, even though “Oedipus Rex” and “The Kite Runner” were written hundreds of years and hundreds of miles apart, they still have similarities. They both use irony, suspense and other writing methods to present a story in an entertaining and thought provoking way. Also, between the two books they share major themes. “The Kite Runner” and “Oedipus Rex” share the theme of guilt and shame, as illustrated in the stories ironies, climax, and by the protagonist actions.
Short stories came into the literature world as brief, single sitting stories, yet containing an exclusively developed subject. A short story is packed with descriptive details that form together to grab the reader’s attention in a short amount of time. The authors indulge in rich details to create the narrative into a jaw dropping meaning story from the beginning to the ending. The author begins with constructing the story with the building blocks of literary devices. Short story authors apply the literary techniques of symbolism, irony and theme to create a meaningful connection with the reader.
Narratives are stories and it is proposed that narratives are an important factor by which our experiences are made meaningful. Such as stories and storytelling help us to make sense of our lives.
For many generations, people used story to pass ideas from one person to another. Whether, verbal, written or draw it on a wall.
