Special Effects Technician Career Overview and Pay Structure
A Special Effects Technician uses Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), pyrotechnics and physical effects to create visual illusions in film, television, stage or video productions. I will attempt to explain the major areas of work covered under the title of Special Effects Technician, the education required and the salary expected in the field The Physical Effects Technician is the technician that works to make props, models, scenery, prosthetics and mechanically animated pieces. The physical effects technician works with a variety of mediums. Body and facial prosthetics utilize sculpting of clay to make molds that are cast to fit the specific actors face and/or body. They are

This technique is used to layer foreground and background images based on color hues or the chroma range. The CGI technician layers the computer modelling around the actor. Programs such as PhotoKey 6 Pro make it possible to render the images seemlessly. Being a CGI technician requires computer knowledge and takes hours to edit and add in the actors into the computer generated world. An example of a seemless CGI movie is Avatar which cost $425,000,000 to make but grossed $2.7 Billion worldwide (www.the-numbers.com/movie/budgets/). For every 1/24 of a second or one frame of film it took 47 hours of rendering (www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/trivia). There are specialized training school for Special Effects Technicians, such as the Art institute with multiple locations across the country and a few in California.. A College degree is not required it is common especially in the area of CGI. A Pyrotechnician must be certified by the state that they work in and pass a Pyrotechnic safety and handling course. The Physical Effects Technician should have a firm grasp of art styles and art mediums. Now that we know what a Special Effects Technician does, what kind of monetary compensation do they earn. A person can specialize in one or more areas of expertise.
Their earnings vary due to geographic location. Since a large majority of the special effects are used in movies, California offers the highest yearly wage of $85,000 per year,New York has a range of $41,000
Multi-Media artists, (including Animators) create special effects such as animation, films, video, computers, or other electronic media.
MRI Technicians need various education sources to become one. You obviously need your high school diploma. From a college level you need at least an associate's degree, but it would be better to receive one from a college accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic technology [JRCERT]. Some college course needed would be as follows: biology, physics, anatomy, MRI physics, MRI procedures, MRI imaging analysis, and Pathophysiology. Your grade should at least be kept above a C average.
One can also pursue a four-year bachelor's degree program that is provided by universities and other community colleges. Technicians generally prefer a bachelor's degree if they would want to diversify into other fields in their career later. Radiology Technician Schools and
There are no standard educational or training requirements for the position of producer (CIC 154). Most producers have studied film, video production, or drama at the college level. Many have also trained as actors in dramatic arts schools. People who may be accepted need at least a bachelor’s degree or two years of on-set experience and also must pass written tests. Courses in acting and communications can be helpful. College drama courses in liberal arts, stage speech and movement, directing, playwriting, history of drama, and design and play production can be helpful also. (GIS 1).
For Lucas it has always been about telling a good story; “For me, digital effects are necessary to my craft-an enchantment to tell stories. Everything we did was driven by that goal-finding better ways to tell stories” (Lucas qtd in Goldman). Exactly as a writer, Lucas wanted to do his best to get people to feel the emotions the characters felt and be able to be swung into another world. In movies it can be both easier and harder to get those feelings out than in books, but nothing had ever stopped Lucas because his passion was to be able to tell a good story. He was able to tell his stories with the visual effects that he made and in that way the movie became more realistic and honest. Lucas also sees visual effects workers and people working in the film industry as artists. “People who work in special effects are extremely important creative partners in this regard. They are all artists.” (Lucas qtd in Goldman). People might not understand the importunateness and hard work video editors and visual effects workers do daily. Just as a painter or photographer, visual effects workers are artists, whom Lucas worked hard on to express and show the world, and also make people interested in his
Hundreds of movies are released every year. Filmmakers try to create the next jaw-dropping movie that audiences will stand in line for hours and pay top dollar to see. The key to success is finding ideas that appeal to a mass audience. Viewers are the lifeline of any production company so making something for everyone is a savvy business move for the film industry. To cover all bases, there are over fourteen different genres of movies. Film making is not a solo effort. It is a collaboration between the actors, directors, producers and other key contributors. This combined effort or mise-en-scene includes all the elements of the film to include actors, backdrops, costumes, props and lighting used to meet the director’s vision
The basic job of a forensic science technician is to aid in police investigations by collecting and analyzing evidence. Forensic science technicians have a large variety of tasks they could be assigned to. They work in many conditions, both outside on a crime scene and inside in labs. Sometimes, the technicians may travel and their work schedules could be chaotic at times. When they work on a crime scene, they are in charge of collecting, cataloging, preserving, sketching, and taking photos of evidence. In a lab, they are responsible for analyzing, consulting, and exploring hidden links in their evidence. There are also different areas a forensic science technician may specialize in, including, but not limited to poisons, teeth, bodies, chemicals,
After browsing through the ASRT website, I found that being an X-Ray technician requires so much more that what I expect. I was not aware that a Radiologic Technologist can be involved with so many fields. According to the ASRT, a Radiologic Technologist can be a Bone Densitometry Technologists, Cardiovascular-Interventional Technologists, Computed Tomography Technologists, Magnetic Resonance Technologists and so on. Radiologic Technologists require extensive educational background and continuing
Many looking for a career become interested in finding out how much auto mechanics get paid. The compelling thing about this question is it really doesn't have a solid answer. With that said, we can take you through the process of what it's like to work as an auto mechanic in a retail service environment.
I’ve been doing some research and I think an x-ray technician is something that I would like to do, and I think I would enjoy the job of helping people out. When a patient arrives x-ray technicians ask then medical, or personal questions that need to be asked, then the person is x-rayed. X-ray technicians also help medical professionals diagnose
Editing is all about bringing a creative force into a film. The process could mean fixing a number of things like moving things around, meaning to arrange, select, and assemble - this goes for every component in the film. What you visualize, hear, with the use of special effects all are components that are edited and added to the film in a unique way to create a good story. The movie to be analysis is the film Forrest Gump with editor, Arthur Schmidt, he won an Oscar at the 67th academy awards for best film editing. Arthur Schmidt had three responsibilities as an editor in the film, which are spatial relationship, temporal relationship, and rhythm.
The role of the Digital Imaging Technician emerged when movie-makers switched from film to digital as the predominant medium for shooting movies and television. In the modern film industry, any production will have at least one DIT or Data Wrangler on set at all times to dump and backup the raw footage, which is their main responsibility. Although they are both in charge of transferring and safeguarding footage, DITs have more responsibilities and play a bigger role both off set and on, and thus need much more experience and knowledge than Data Wranglers.
Audio engineering is a very exciting job. A sound engineering technician is someone who will set up, operate, and maintain the electrical equipment for radio, concerts, and sound recordings. Sound engineering technician typically works indoors. Sound technicians require technical skill in a candidate. Shaun mentioned sound engineer is not for everyone; candidate should be someone who works well with other. Employee should also be responsible enough to deal with long hours and especially at late nights. It's a great job if you have the determination to stick with it. It's a competitive field, but for those who stay with it, they are rewarded with a great living doing what they
IT has also changed the way movies are shot particularly through application of film special effects. The film industry heavily relies on illusions to simulate imaginary events in a story (McClean, 2007). Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) is another key technology that is applied to special effects to enhance films. CGI is mainly used in special effects to enable filmmakers to control the scenes instead of using many extra actors. This has simplified film production and reduced the costs incurred. A lot of movies especially those classified under fiction, action, and horror genres rely on CGI.
It is believed that more than 50 percent of the film involved special effects. One of the many reasons is because the film itself was made on a budget and the other being “for the nature and scope of its subject” (The Denny Life) to keep costs down. One of the methods that revolutionize cinematography was the introduction of a technique known as deep focus by Orson Welles. Deep focus is the use of “having everything in the frame even the background in focus at the same time” contrary to “having only the people or object in the foreground in focus” (The Denny Life). Moreover, the deep focus technique requires the cinematographer to combine lighting, composition, and type of camera lens to produce the desired effect. For example, Orson Welles use this technique on
