Spirituality is defined as the personal quest for understanding answers to the ultimate questions about life, about meaning and about relationship with the sacred or transcendent, which may or may not lead to or arise from the development of religious rituals and the formation of a community (Koenig, et al., 2001). Spirituality is distinguished from all other things such as humanism, values, morals, and mental health by its connection to sacred, the transcendent. The transcendent is that which is outside oneself yet also within oneself (Koenig, 2010). Spirituality connected to the supernatural and religion although also extends beyond religion. In 2005 Census recorded that 7 percent of Brazilian population said that they are religiousness (Almeida, 2006). Many studies showed that there is a positive correlation between psychological well-being and other indicators of positive mental health. This positive association has been consistently similar in samples from various countries, in different religions, races, and ages (Levin, 2005). Most of the studies showed that there is a positive impact of religion on well-being on elderly, disabled, and medically ill people (Almeida, 2006). In the study with 233 British residents, spiritual beliefs were a significant predictor of psychological well-being. In United States, 1126 non institutionalized older people were interviewed and they reported the feeling of closeness with God was related to optimism. This optimism had a strong influence on their self-rated health status (Kraus, 2002).
