Sports Medicine
The Sports Medicane Profession has responded to the rise in over use injuries by
placing greater emphasis on injury prevention, developing new diagnostic and treatment
techniques, and promoting rehabilitation as an aid to full recovery. This is what Dr. Lyle J.
Micheli, one of the nations foremost sports medicane authorities, calls the "new sports
medicane."
Below is an example of what a typical sports doctor will do before getting their degree:
It has become increasingly evident over the past 25 years that there is a need for
data on injury rates for the variety of sports and physical activities in which people of all
ages are becoming involved. The research literature on the

This pilot study
was undertaken to test data collection forms and procedures for a planned longitudinal,
prospective study of exercise and injury patterns in a large sample of middle-aged and
older adults.
As a pilot study of activity and injury patterns in middle-aged adults, data were
collected monthly for 6 months from 25 regularly exercising adults (19 male, 6 female)
aged 43-70 years (mean 54.0 yr). Each subject completed a daily exercise log noting type,
duration and intensity of exercise, and distance covered (if appropriate). Any injuries or
illnesses causing restriction of normal activity were recorded on separate check-off forms.
Reports were received each of the 6 months from all subjects. The subjects accumulated
3209 exercise sessions, totaling 2631 hrs. The predominant activities were running (2128
sessions; 1780 hrs; 19,638 km), weightlifting (357 sessions; 181 hrs), walking (228
sessions; 195 hrs; 1064 km) and cycling (109 sessions; 78 hrs; 1992 km). All other
exercise activities (e.g., tennis, swimming, rowing, water running) totaled 388 sessions
and 397 hrs. The subjects averaged 4.0 hrs/week of exercise in 4.9 sessions/week of 49
min/session. Two-thirds of the sessions involved running, and 21 subjects ran regularly.
These subjects ran an average of 3.9 times/week, 50.2 min/session, 38.2 km/week, 9.3
km/session at
Sports Therapist Job role/ Description Their job role is to examine injuries and diagnose what type of injury they are. If they do have an injury they may need to give a massage to the patient to help the muscle or teach the patient different taping techniques to help their injury recover quick and also support the injury. They then plan a treatment programme for this individual to recover. Sports Therapists use methods to help rehabilitate the patient such as massaging, hydrotherapy and heat treatment to help the injury or condition from worsening and help heal it.
Sports has always been a huge part of my life. I would be the one team player who took the sports season a little bit too seriously. I was the number 1 doubles player on my school's JV tennis team. Unfortunately, I fractured my ankle during my junior year and wasn't able to play with my team. I was devastated, but I didn’t allow myself to become disconnected from my team. I became the team manager to allow myself to still play a role in my team, despite my injury. I would record scores to my division leaders and take pictures to post on the website I created for my team. After the season was over, my doctor told me my ankles required surgery to become fully healed. I knew that meant I couldn’t continue to play tennis, but I didn’t want to give
As we begin to grow up and come to the end of our high school career we must start to begin to start thinking about what type of career we want to be in. It is very important that a person picks the right type of career for them. Otherwise you will be unhappy with what you are doing and will not enjoy it at all. I am not entirely sure what I want my career to be but I have a pretty good idea as to what type of job it will be. I would like to go into the field of a physical therapist and sports medicine, I fell I will enjoy this more than any other type of career just because I already have a lot of interest in it.
Injury is a serious public health issue. Injuries differ by their nature and severity. Injuries can be unintentional or intentional. Unintentional injuries include road traffic injuries, falls, burns, drowning, poisoning, and intentional injuries include self-inflicted injuries, interpersonal violence, and war-related injuries [1,2,3]. Globally, injury causes over five million deaths per year [1,2,3]. Injury cases result in more deaths than HIV-AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined (3.8 million) [1,3,4]. Nonfatal injuries represent a large proportion of the injury burden and deaths represent a small proportion [4]. Most injuries result in significant psychological trauma, potentially life-long disability, and subsequent financial loss [4].
It’s all over the news. At least, it’s all over the sports news. There is even a movie that is entirely about this one injury. The invisible injury. An injury that can present itself as simple headaches to nausea to dizziness to complete loss of consciousness. Something that is described as a bruise to the brain caused by a bump or a blow to the head has become an athlete’s worst nightmare: a concussion (What).
Throughout this project my intention is to learn about all my career and college options for my desired job which is a sports medicine physician. With this report I aim to learn as much as I can about that job because then I can make an educated decision whether or not I want to pursue this career. As I write this Career Research report I hope to learn what high school and college classes I need to take and how many years I need to attend college. I hope that this paper helps me wrap my head around this job and decide whether this is a career I would like to do further research in.
The purpose of this lab was to see if following the HHS (Health and Human Services) (Morgan P.11) suggested diet would be healthier or a person which follows their own diet. This was measured by the Fitness index. The results in average of the Fitness Index in Table 1.3 (P. 15) showed that the Athletic got a fitness index of 72.3 and the Sedentary got a Fitness Index of 70.6. In Table 1.1 (p.13) it shows that a high average is around 65 FI to 79 FI. The average are fairly close to each other which is shown in Table 1.6 (p.19) this is a bar graph of the averages. These results came from the different groups doing the following the same procedure. Some trends that were noted in the average was that many people got a higher index in sedentary
Based upon the 48-hour intake journal, patient eats between 1500 to 2000 calories a day. Patient has been trying to minimize foods high in sodium and fat to help regulate recommended caloric, fat, and sodium intake. Patient wants to reduce the risks of hypertension and diabetes. Patient states that she runs on the treadmill 2 times a week for 1 hour. She walks around the mall 3 times a week for approximately an hour and walks to school 4 times a week for 30 minutes. Patient sleeps approximately 7 hours per night (falls asleep around 10:00 pm and wakes up at 5:30 am). Patient falls asleep due to fatigue. Patient wakes up in the middle of the night due to difficulty sleeping, from thinking about school and stressed. Patient’s quality of sleep
The main research of this paper is Sports injuries. Sport injuries are very common in the modern world and it has severe effects in the life of athletes. Injuries related to sport can lead to loss of life, body parts or career depending on the severity of the accident. Sport injuries have several negative impacts on the physical, mental, social ability of athletes. To accomplish the paper appropriately some real-life examples have been included in this research, for illustration. For better understanding of the rise of the sports related injuries, a graph has been mentioned that shows the difference between the numbers of sports injuries recently compared to 2004. Finally the research paper has been concluded by proving that
I will have two groups both containing 5 people, in total 10 people all are males, one group contains people who practice an aerobic exercise on a daily-basis (soccer and basketball), while the other group contains people who do not practice an
I elaborated two tables based on the subjects who do exercise constantly and the subjects who don’t, I present those tables in table 1 (athletic people) and table 2 (people who doesn’t do exercise constantly)
I remember fracturing my ankle once from a soccer injury. I took around a month or two to rehabilitate my injury. The physician was able to answer all the questions I had as well as teach me how to walk again after removing my cast. His knowledge of the body and how fast he could recall the information fascinated me. Of course there is also my mother who is a nurse, and she also wants me to be a doctor. In addition to that, my passion to help people added on to my curiosity of pursuing a life in the medical field. It was not until I took Honors Biology 1 with Professor Do at IVC that my interest in biology was made certain. I originally wanted to be a clinical psychologist, but the reason I strayed from it was because I wanted to deal with
What is a sports physical therapist? A sports physical therapist is a physical therapist who specializes in the field of sports medicine. This type of therapist is qualified to work with patients who have suffered debilitating injuries from sporting events (Thyberg). Sports physical therapists work with a number of patients with problems ranging from muscle pains to sports injuries. Their work doesn’t consist of only working with injured patients; sports physical therapists must come up with care plans, fill out paper work, and check in with their patient’s doctors for status updates. There are several components that make up the job of a sports physical therapist.
If I was analyzing the results of an exercise machine that provided an average 10 pound weight loss result, I would seek several pieces of information. First, I would want to know the number of the population surveyed. I would also seek information regarding those who implemented a change in diet along with the use of the exercise machine. In order to lose weight, one must burn more calories than they take in (iVillage, 2004). Thus, one must implement a healthy diet to increase the probability of weight loss. I would need to know the time frame for which the loss occurred. Did the 10 pound loss happen in a weeks or months? Verification of actual exercise machine usage should be a required element for reference. The population represented within
In sports, especially professional sports injury is a great possibly, and a common and very serious injury is plaguing all sports. The concussion is that injury. And over the past few years the NHL and other leagues or trying to crack down on concussions; but those are only partial solutions. In hockey concussions, can come from anything and happen at any time. Thus, proposing a solution or a way to prevent them, is very difficult. As per a study that took place from 1997-2004, results published in 2011 by CTV, states “With averages ranging from 4.6 to 7.7 concussions per 100 NHL players per season, it’s likely that each of the 30 teams in the league will see at least one or two players miss time due to a concussion every year” (Tahirali). Thusly supporting how many players received concussions, even if this study is older. Many people are fighting to get the game changed to combat concussions, and just as many fight to not change the game; although they still do not want concussions.
