In a place flooded with war and violence, a school is separated from reality; living within the walls are the boys of the school, shielded from the ugly truths that lie beyond. During this time of adolescence, the boys are forced to grow and mature while the walls that protect them begin to fall. One boy, Gene, lives within this wall and matures into a young man during this time through many events and conflicts he faces. Through these events occurring, he is now able to withstand the violence of the world, war and trauma. This coming of age is demonstrated when Gene causes Finny to fall out of the tree, discovers the reality of war, and Finny dies.

The movie, “Stand by Me,” exhibits the many things a child goes through during the adolescence. The theories of Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Erik Erikson are clearly exemplified in Gordy, Chris, Teddy, and Vern throughout the movie. The four kids are identical to one stage each of Jean Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, Lawrence Kohlberg’s stages of moral development, and Erik Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development.      The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn’t have the same eerie feel as some of his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of Castle Rock, Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960’s. The kids are bored and that is the setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods.

The movie is an adaption of book written by Markus Zusak, who has won many awards and sold over a million copies of the book worldwide. Brian Percival’s movie adaptation did a wonderful job depicting the complex nature of the book and what it was like to live as a child during World War Two. The book Girl, Interrupted is about a teenage girl Susanna Kaysen. At the age of 18 she voluntarily sent herself to the McLean hospital. In the beginning of the book the Susanna was talking to a psychiatrist she has been seeing for awhile, she has had a couple of suicide attempts so she started seeing that doctor. The doctor had recommended Susanna to go to McLean to help her be anti-depressive and help cure her borderline personality. Susanna ended up being in the hospital for 2 years.

Carrie stared out the window of the car at the endless plains outside. People always described this kind of scenery as boring or dull, yet Carrie enjoyed looking at it. She needed the reminder that vast open spaces such as this still existed. After living with her father in the big city for nearly three years, Carrie had had enough. Moving back to her childhood home was a tough decision, but she needed to see something natural and the city parks would never be enough. Nobody can really enjoy a city park; the officials chase down and ticket those who “abuse” the grounds. Carrie collected quite a few tickets for, of all things, climbing trees. People climbed trees all the time where Carrie came from and the worst that happened was a scraped knee or a broken branch.

The Stand by Stephen King was a very detailed, and engulfing story about a possible end to mankind. This “extermination” is caused by a man-made variation of the flu that is 100% fatal and spread through the air. It wipes out 99% of the world’s population in a month, leaving around 1 million people in the entire United States. The story is about how the population is split between good and evil and the battle that goes on between the two colonies. The story is presented from many different point of views, because there are around ten to fifteen different main characters.

Cry, the Beloved Country is a moving story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son Absalom. They live in an Africa torn apart by racial tensions and hate. It is based on a work of love and hope, courage, and endurance, and deals with the dignity of man. The author lived and died (1992) in South Africa and was one of the greatest writers of that country. His other works include Too Late the Phalarope, Ah, but Your Land Is Beautiful, and Tales from a Troubled Land.
