MOSPE Leadership Standards Reflection Paper TURNER, DEMOND KENNETH 5/1/2015 Standard I Vision Mission and Goals As an educational leader, I must have a vision and mission statement for the school that is known by the staff, students, and parents. The vision will address the needs of the students academically, emotionally, and socially. According to DuFour (1998), “ Those who seek to transform their school into a professional learning community as characterized by an environment fostering mutual cooperation, emotional support, personal growth, and a synergy of efforts.” The leader must implement a plan that will cultivate the success of all students. The mission will speak to the direction of the school community stating what the desire goals are. The building leader will lead by example. High expectations will be communicated and encourage by staff and students. The educational leader of a school must develop a culture of team work to create a climate that is student friendly. The vision mission and goals of the leader should be transparent. The establishment of common goals is the first step. Without common goals, sustainable progress will be impossible and thus everyone will have lower expectations. The students, parents, and staff should be commented to the goals of every child reaching their full academic potential. The school environment should speak to goal setting and high expectations for all students and staff. The principal should be the keeper
The first role in building a successful learning community is to formulate a solid base of shared mission, vision, values, and goals. These four are the building blocks of a solid foundation for decision making for school improvement. Mission or purpose is the first block and focuses on the question “Why do we exist?” The second block is vision or the direction the school is headed. It asks the question “What kind of school or district do we hope to become?” A values block asks “How
The second quality of an effective leader is to have a vision. The vision should also include the schools missions, purpose and goals. The principal should be progressive and constantly looking for ways to keep the staff and students motivated to work towards a common goal. As an effective leader you must continuously promote the vision. This could be done with a school created slogan that fits the community. Most people want to belong and feel a part of something successful or on the path to greatness. It is a wonderful feeling to be a member of a successful school community where people really
As one leads with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner, they lead by modeling those values and beliefs that belong in an educational setting. They show concern and care personally for the students, staff and communities learning, behaviors, and lives. Leaders promote a culture of openness and trust. They model appropriate behavior and skills to improve learning and engage others to share in this process through collaboration.
As a leader I envision my school as one where students and teachers come to a place they enjoy entering each day. All share the focus of the school, the belief that all students can become high achievers. Staff is centered on student achievement; no matter what academic level that all students face coming into the classroom. All staff will understand that all children are teachable, even those with learning issues.
Effective leadership requires purpose and direction. Planning and preparation are vital when evaluating the success of the institution. The course reading states: ?As a new principal, you must assess the capacity of delivery mechanisms, facilities, and equipment before you make recommendations for enhancements? (WGU Student Portal, January 5, 2017). Attention to detail, being flexible and problem solving are at the core of school leadership. This paper will discuss two types of delivery mechanisms as it relates to learning and provide specific examples of how programs are used. Next, examine school facilities, technology and equipment, including use and specifications. Finally, discuss process improvement as it relates to the educational institution.
This will continue to support my organizations goal of supporting every learner into being college and workforce thriving members of their communities. I would also like to develop myself as an effective leader to have the knowledge and skills available when professional growth opportunities arrive within my organization. Positioning myself as a leader will allow me to develop and implement policies and practices that would support the mission and vision of
Leithwood and Jantzi argue the ability to articulate a clear vision is an essential attribute for school leaders (2008, p. 507). Goal setting is a powerful motivator for change and when leaders are able to clearly communicate inspiration vision to those they lead, it is possible to harness this motivation to bring about school improvement in student learning (Leithwood & Jantzi, 2008, p.507). Clearly defined goals encourage school community to contribute to common goals and also streamlines decision making as only options that align with the vision need to be considered (Hallinger, 2010, p.129).
The ISLLC standards provide high-level guidance and insight about the traits, functions of work, and responsibilities expected of school and district leaders (ISLCC, 2008). Their main purpose is to increase understanding of how educational administrators can enhance teaching practices and student learning. As future school leaders it is imperative that we use these standards as tools in assisting us when making a decision regarding our stakeholders. However, applying the ISLLC standards in a school setting does not guarantee success for a school leader, but it does facilitate the process in creating a positive school culture in a learning
Your thoughts on loyalty as an element of the Mission Vision Guiding Principles (MVGP) that relates to the Cherry-Halyburton Prisoner of War (POW) lecture is spot-on! As explained in the MVGP, loyalty must never be blind (Manning, 2008, p.4). Both Commander Halyburton and Colonel Cherry depended on each other for survival despite their difference in skin color, rank, and service. As you have mentioned they cared for each other military brothers and their loyalty and devotion to each other is proven in their survival.
Two instructional leadership actions our principal has taken is to work side by side teachers to develop a school-wide reading goal in accordance with our Student Improvement Plan and to develop and implement a tutoring period we call Core for low achieving students. Jason works many hours during each week reviewing student grades and moving struggling students in and out of Core or moving struggling students from one teacher’s Core to another teacher’s

My first step when I enter Alfred Middle School is to meet with my talented staff. It’s important that I have a positive working relationship with my most important, which are my teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff. I’m pleased to hear that my staff has a great work ethic; therefore, I will be able to rely on them for support. During that initial meeting, I ask the staff for their input for the school's mission. The mission statement is most important because it establishes our purpose and why we do what we do. Furthermore, it’s imperative that we have a consensus on the statement because I will need everyone to buy in on our mission. This initiative is the segue for the vision of our school, which is the next step in my process for school improvement. Our vision gives the stakeholders what is to be expected from our school in the future. With that said, I would create two groups in effort to support of shared governance of the school. I will listen to my staff, and I would encourage participation in the decision-making process. As a counter balance, the other group will be a School Advisory Committee, which is a combination of parents, business partners and community leaders. Their primary job is to advise and recommend improvements for the school. After I have established the mission, vision and the governing groups, I will move forward to address the immediate needs for
My vision is to be an instructional leader who shares knowledge while guiding others to strive for greatness. I will dedicate the necessary energy to build a school culture where everyone is supported and respected. It is my goal to be the kind of leader that helps build a strong school community that promotes student learning. It is important that I am an active leader that sets examples, but also pays attention to the need of the staff. I will collaborate with others and combine our strengths to promote high achievement.
Educational leadership is the hot topic in most school districts today. The leaders of our school systems are breeding tomorrow 's leaders, empowering students and teachers through academic success. Administrators, principals, and school leaders, both formal and informal are under an amassed amount of pressure, they must manage the education process holistically assuring that it is legal and effective in every way. My purpose for seeking a master 's degree in Educational leadership is to develop the theory and research necessary to empower teachers and students in urban areas. I understand that schools who aim for excellence, share a common goal throughout the entire school, and has a vision will achieve higher than any school without a clear vision. I know that success is dependent on teacher quality and student achievement.
