One movie that comes to mind is Jaws, a movie directed by Steven Spielberg and sound by John Williams. The movie is about a shark that terrorizes a beach in new england, the main character teams up with two other men and tries to fix the problem but they later realise that the shark is bigger than they thought. There is one scene that shows the aspects of music in a perfect way. The scene has become famous because the main character says the line “we're gonna need a bigger boat”. The scene starts out with no music and just relays on dialogue and sound effects. Then, as the main character throws meat into the ocean, the shark appears and when it appears the music bursts out. The same applies to a dramatic scene where the music may be deep and frantic to convey to the audience the feeling of anticipation. A scene i would like to focus on is the scene in which Garry and his father have a final ‘showdown’, if you will, at the front of the house. The scene consists of the father imposing himself on Garry and proceeding to continually beat him down time after time only for Garry to rise up and face his father on each occasion. This scene evoked a feeling of pride and admiration from the audience as to Garry’s courage and determination to convey the message to his father that he is ready to stand on his own two feet and defy him. This is a very powerful scene within the movie which initiated powerful emotions within the audience. All of this was accomplished with the notable absence of music of any form. The omission of music in this scene created an atmosphere in which the dramatic affect was amplified due to the silence.

Steven Spielberg used classic linear storytelling in his movies, the narrative in most of his movies were Plot driven and very effective. He is a storyteller always mindful of holding his audience. Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of today. He is master in taking stories and incidents from the past and and rejuvinating them with his own potential.
The music helped in elaborating this great film. As I mentioned in class different instruments helped create different moods for different scenes in the movie. We heard the cello and the violin to create sadness and remorse. The flute created eeriness and the trumpet created awareness. I thought these were instruments and tools that help make this film extraordinary.

Looking upon silent cinema one discovers an era which wasn’t at all silent, but rich in sound of different forms, from the simple narration of the images shown on screen, accompanied by a piano, to the complex score later composed specifically for that film. An example of that complex score is shown in Sunrise, a film by F.W. Murnau, which lies at the border between silent cinema and sound cinema. In the movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, plot is foreshadowed with ominous and foreboding music as the viewers see Wonka’s chocolate. It can be inferred simply from the music that the chocolate will be very important, but not necessarily a good element. Contrasting that, Big Fish uses non-diegetic music to make a conversation between father and son seem extremely emotional and high-spirited.

While well-crafted sound design and sound effects are so very necessary in the creation of a film, music touches the emotion, the psyche, and the things you cannot see. In this over the shoulder shot from Spielberg's Jaws- the audience can hear both the conversations in the scene (Brody on the phone and mom and son)- the mise en scene informs the audience which conversation is more important and the mood of the scene by using lense, staging and form. Furthermore the lense is focused more on Brody and the back is slightly blurred out, direction the audience's attention to Brody even though the conversation in the background is audible.
