Students know money a major contributing factor of stress in every individual’s life. How are we going to pay next months rent, next semester’s tuition, books, food, etc? Stress comes in various types. Whether we realize it or not, students must be able to recognize symptoms of stress in order to know if their body or mind is affected.
“Symptoms of stress appear in many forms. Some symptoms only affect the person who is directly experiencing stress. Other symptoms may have an impact on our relationships with others.” (Archer & Carroll, 2003, Stress and College Students, Para 5). This paper discusses the three categories of symptoms one encounters with stress. The first symptom that one might face deals with the physical aspect of their body.
Have you ever worked on a project that gave you a headache after much thought? One might face this physical symptom. Muscular tensions, colds, ulcers and high blood pressure are but a few physical symptoms of stress (Archer & Carroll, 2003). Next are the emotional symptoms.
Have you ever reached a point mentally where you were so overwhelmed you felt you could not go on? This is an example of an emotional symptom of stress. This is one of the most common emotional symptoms that a college student might face. Depression, anger and mood swings (Archer & Carroll, 2003) are also common emotional symptoms encountered when one is stressed. Last but not least are the
Stress and anxiety in the average college student. Selye (1936) defined stress as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change” (The American Institute of Stress, 2017). Stress can lead to feelings of anxiety. Anxiety is a normal part of life, but can be considered a type of worry or fear that can inhibit everyday life. College students show higher stress/anxiety than average individuals. Major sources of stress are from new responsibilities, campus living, money issues, and classwork (Ross, Niebling, & Heckert, 1999). There have been a number of studies circled around how stress can affect college students. Females and males show differences in anxiety/stress in college. (Misra and McKean (2000)) found that females
Stress is a word that many college students hear on a daily basis; it is a concept that resonates with all students, regardless of age or major. People of all ages experience stress at various times in their lives, but college is a particular time when an individual can be plagued by heightened levels of it. At any given time, a college student might feel academic, financial, and social strains, yet they might not possess the resources to satisfy the demands of these stressors. Accumulation of these stressors (and stress in general) can have a negative impact on the lives of college students, but authors of a recent scientific study made an attempt to find the best techniques for reducing stress in college students.
This can affect how an individual feels, think and behave. Signs and symptoms can include sleeping problems, loss of appetite and difficulty concentrating. Stress can usually cause high blood pressure.
Not just stress, but stress and its effects on students, particularly students of Massey. I know that almost all of the people in this room have felt the effects of stress, especially with the SciCan posters due today and speeches going on. I’ll even bet that there are students in this room who only finished their poster today. And I’d win that bet because that’s what I did. This topic is one that many can relate too, and
Entering college as a first year student I knew the work load would be tough but I wasn’t aware of how many different obstacles would be thrown my way. Every week I had an exam. Every week I had a paper or a quiz or something that needed my immediate attention. My body was stunned by the amount of stimuli it was being bombarded with. Saying I was overwhelmed is a gross understatement. That didn’t even begin to describe how I was feeling. I always felt like I never had enough time, like I never had enough energy. I felt as if I was being pulled into several different directions. My body was having a difficult time adjusting and adapting to the changes of work in my new environment. When I got my exams and papers back it didn’t help that the grades that I received were significantly lower than what I was used to. It only added to my stress. I started experiencing frequent migraine headache, I was more susceptible to sickness and I had grown increasingly frustrated and irritable. Pain exhaustion, irritability, and anxiety is what I associated with stress. I realized the correlation between my stress and terrible tensions my body experienced. The more stressed I was the more tension I experienced. I found myself crying very often and feeling like I didn’t know what to do. When I was stressed it forced me to find ways to de-stress myself. I had to find something to release my stress so that I wasn’t overcome with so many
Another significant cause of stress is a lot of individuals are suffering from a financial. Some people have a lot of amount of debt more than their income. For example, people should pay for medicals, educations, and bills. For this reason, debt gives rise of tension. Debt is a huge ball of stress (“The Debt-Stress Connection,” n.d.). Also, college students feel anxious about their money. Some scholar reduced their class load due to the money, and the another took a break from the University (Grabmeler, 2015). Financial issues give rise to some students to make challenging selections about their study. In addition, parents worrying about how they would take care of their children. For example, parents must buy food and clothes, paying the
Stress is a reality that so many collage students coexist with in their everyday lives. But they do not need to. (Same website) 30% of collage students reported that stress had negatively affected their academic performance. Preventing stress in collage life is crucial because it is derogatory towards academia success. There are many unique ways to reduce and prevents stress from overtake collage students life, things like fitness, meditation, and many small quarks that can be picked through
That feeling of walking back from an exam or staying up all night cramming information is well known to any student who has been through college. It leaves one feeling overwhelmed like the week will never end. The feelings are held inside while friends and roommates accuse moodiness which leads to the meltdown that is inevitable. These times are a result of a common state known as stress. Stress is a condition in which the body responds to any kind of demand or threat caused by life factors which include pressure, work, school, major changes, and lack of sleep. This factor is very common in colleges, especially freshmen and can also be seen here at Trine University. Stress can affect both physical and mental conditions in the body, such as sleep patterns, eating habits, anxiety,
Thesis: Today I will discuss about sources and effects of student stress and efficient ways to manage this emotional and physical strain.
Stress is no new phenomenon. It’s been around as long as man and has captivated scholars and physicians alike. With the growing demand for degrees in the professional world comes the growth of the number of college students. The relationship between stress and college students has become the subject of on-going research. Several studies show that stress in college students is increasing with time and the authors of those studies are attributing this to an increased number of students. Other research seems to indicate that it isn’t necessarily the stress that is increasing but the awareness of it. Increased awareness of stress, and its unique toll on individuals, allows colleges and students to recognize
Stress is an ongoing dilemma that occurs in each and everyone’s life. It is a factor that is undoubtedly a part of daily living. Due to the trivial problems that occur in people’s daily lives massive amounts of stress can arise. People perceive and manage stress in many different ways. The causes and effects of stress are numerous and one’s ability to manage stress is vital in maintaining healthy living.
Second, stress may result in a number of emotional problems. The most common ones are the feeling of being overwhelmed, depression, fear, and anger. However, students may also experience irritability, mood swings, bad temper, worrying, nervous laugh, and crying spells.
The external component of the Biopsychosocial Model of stress involves environmental events that precede the recognition of stress and can elicit a stress response. A previously mentioned, the stress reaction is elicited by a wide variety of psychosocial stimuli that are either physiologically or emotionally threatening and disrupt the body's homeostasis (Cannon, 1932). We are usually aware of stressors when we feel conflicted, frustrated, or pressured. Most of the common stressors fall within four broad categories: personal, social/familial, work, and the environment. These stressful events have been linked to a variety of psychological physical complaints. For example bereavement
Newth (2011) claims that modern day stress seems to be more widespread than ever causing interference with human intellect, emotional and interpersonal functioning. Therefore; I suggest that students will encounter stress and it will impact their academic performance. In this fast pace and performance driven society each organization needs well performing people. The only way we will know what people require to become productive and less stressed is to explore topics as my research question. The topic
Stress can affect all aspects of one's mind and body. Behaviorally, stress can cause anger, excessive crying, depression, apprehension, increased alcohol use, mood swings, and even suicide. It can cause problems physically as well. Anorexia, fatigue, trembling, loss of appetite, and headaches are just a few of the symptoms that overly stressed individuals may experience (Morrison 2).
