The way you deal with stress is as unique as you are, there are countless ways to reduce stress. Researchers have made discoveries that latter helps reduce stress because it produces hormones in people's minds that relax and calm them down. Gratitude, being grateful and keeping a journal to help see through the stress and find the good in life and cherish what it gives has been shown to fight stress and push it away as if it were never there. Researchers have discovered that listening to a playlist of natural sounds like a river lowing down a peaceful stream, or waves crashing on a sun stricken beach, is perfect for collage students while studying for that last minuet exam or cramming a research paper. According to a study by the Associated Press and mtvU, “eight in 10 college students say they have sometimes or frequently experienced stress in their daily lives over the past three months,” (‘Stress in College Students”). College Students are inevitably going to be affected by stress at some point throughout their college experience; however, the cause of the stress can vary by student. Some of the causes of stress on college students can be tests, homework, home life, social life, and jobs. Many times, college students have all or most of these causes piled on top of one another; therefore, giving them extremely high levels of stress. There are many negative effects of stress on college students.
Although the stress of college students is largely present, it is just another part of college. The real epidemic here besides added pressure on female students is how students as a whole can reduce the amount of stress that is put on them by personal practices. Fortunately for us the human brain and body have been adapting to stress and are now evolved enough to know how to cope properly. Our bodies begin handling stress as soon as it is detected with a “Flight or Fight” response (King, 2014) and determines what to do right away. However, if the stress is too much for the body to handle it may lead to psychical or emotional trauma, which can cause PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Now I am not suggesting that college will give you PTSD but, I am allowing insight to what would potentially happen if one gets too stressed out. It would lead not only to PTSD but also eating disorders or sleeping disorders. The best option for dealing with stress in college, in my opinion, is what psychologists call Emotion-focused coping. Colleges today are chock full of stressors, so in the little down time that us students (and teachers) have we must find a way to cope. So i told myself I would do my homework the day it was assigned, I would go to the tutors if i needed help, and I would study more to succeed. Stress is usually thought of as damaging, but a certain amount of stress is needed to caution students that they have work to do and deadlines to meet. Stress is heavily involved in a considerable portion of college students’ lives. This makes sense since it is so effortless to encounter during our years in college, which are like trying to juggle seven chainsaws that are on fire. There are so many things going on in our lives all at once and, for many of us college students this involves working on homework, studying for exams, going to class, holding down a job, and using money wisely to get by all while getting enough sleep and having a social life. Despite all of these obligations, it is possible to fulfill them all without being stressed. According to John Kabat Zinn, “[things are] not a problem for you, unless you make it a problem for you”. By applying this to your everyday life it allows for it to transform into the opposite of a stress-filled life, which is a carefree life. You must first become able to apply it.
While the years in collage can be both enjoyable and educational they can also be stressful. In fact, there are causes why collage life can be stressful and these are a few I came up with. The first one is students are disorganized, and they don’t organize what their priories are. This is a big problem for me for example, when I choose to go out with my friends instead of doing my school work. Another cause is work load. Many new students don’t realize collage isn’t like high school, where there is less work and teachers aren’t telling you to turn your work in. And finally there is no balance for example when a student spends too much time studying that they end up not having a social life which also causes stress. Overall these are the causes
Stress is unavoidable, no matter the situation, location, or time; stress is always present. Stress is found in higher levels during the duration in which students attend college. It is predictably higher among college students, freshmans in particular, because of the extreme expectations set upon them by their parents and, of course, society. The need to please their parents, longing for success in life, and being able to sustain a reasonable income in the future, all of which falls into the hands of college students who are making critical decisions which may decide the outcome for a large portion of their lives.
