Conclusively, this biggest impact from this class was the enlightenment on how my stress is going to kill me if I do not make immediate changes to my life. Moreover, week one was a reality check for me seeing just what the effects of stress can do to an individual was beneficial in recognizing I was exhibited some of the symptoms of stress-related illnesses. Through the reading material I remember thinking stress is doing unbelievable things physically and mentally to me and I was oblivious. Thankfully, from this course I have learned and implemented some valuable techniques that have been working for me thus far. First, from the Wisdom of the Ages section, this was one of my favorite sections in the text; I learned how to utilize the decompression chamber technique (Manning, Curtis, McMillen & Attenweiler, 2011). With my horrendous history of carrying work stress home and vice versa, this technique has allowed me to use the three R concepts, which are reviewing the previous events, rehearsing for impending activities and relaxing (Manning et al., 2011). Successfully, using my drive time in my vehicle to mentally unwind and relax between has helped me tremendously. In addition, being on the verge of burnout, taking time to escape for a while has been advantageous in my life (Manning et al., 2011). Since I started taking walks at break time at work or when I feel my stress rising and when I am overwhelmed at home I have been giving myself a cooling off period to regroup and
The Science of Stress is an informative video by National Geographic detailing the body response to stress. Stress is the body’s way of getting itself prepared to face a challenge. It is constant problem that everyone has to deal with. It was originally meant to aid our survival, but over time it has become dangerous and lethal to our well being. National Geographic’s video gives us a scientific view of what goes on in our bodies when experiencing stress and its effects on it.
According to Gerald Corey and Marianne Corey (2014) in I Never Knew I had a Choice: Explorations in Personal Growth, the idea presented in the book is recognizing and responding constructively to the sources of stress rather than trying to eliminate them, because stress is an inevitable part of life that cannot be eliminated but can be managed (Corey & Corey, 2014).
There are many different broad definitions of stress and how to cope with it, known as stress management.
Society defines stress as anything which forces us to change. Through technical terms stress is defined as “a negative emotional state occurring in response to events that are perceived as taking or exceeding a person’s resources or ability to cope.” To explaining stress researchers came up with the “Cognitive appraisal model”, this system works to tell us whether we believe we have enough resources to deal with the situation without becoming stressed. For instance as a now college student those who have had previous experience taking finales in high school can have less stress than those who have not taken it. This is because they have previous experience with taking the tests and learning how to study while those who have never taken one can become extremely stressed over the unknown of the test. Stress is one of the sub branches that is attached to the world of health psychology. Health psychology is a quickly growing branch that deals with the way the mind and body work together. Psychologists that work in the health field came up with the biopsychosocial model. This model explains the complex interaction with biological, psychological, and social factors.
Reflect on what you have learned in this course and discuss how it might influence your work as a professional
As a Richland Collegiate High School student, I am always attacked by stressors in my academic life. The stress provoked by school-related objects often bled into my home and social life. It created an unhealthy environment where I felt weighed down by the stress. Due to the stress, I often lost my appetite and started sleeping less. My mother worried that I was depressed or that I was developing an eating disorder, but I just did not know how to pick myself up and just get things done. I lacked motivation, self-control, and a healthy balance of work and relaxation. Throughout the course, I have been picking up on some of the strategies I can use to help alleviate my stress and subsequently improve other aspects of my life.

I really enjoyed watching Kelly Mcgonigal video. I can honest agree with the study of stress By understanding feeling stress can be good for you. My reasons is because stress is a feeling of what you think could be wrong in your life or different obstracles. You can control your thoughts and feelings and think of stress as a challenge. Think of a challeng that you will only conquer. What you think of stress in your life view. Understanding that feeing stress could be helpful, knowing thats its only a battle that you will defeat. In the video students from Harvard University was tested by doing a stress social test. They was taught to be prepared and rethink they
I needed to reduce my stress level if I wanted to get an A in the class. I used two coping strategies to overcome the stress I had. The strategies were emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping. First, I decided to look
Completing lab assessment 6.2 was my favorite part about this lab, because it gave me a clear understanding of the situations that have been causing me stress in the past months. It is really interesting to be able to sit down and just reflect on things that could be causing stress and what would be some ways to reduce the stress. Looking at the hassles I circle, I could see a pattern between being more stress about my future and job security. As a 24 year old college student I believe planning for our future and job security is our biggest hassle and annoyance. I also realize that just planning meals throughout my day is a big annoyance because I tend to be so busy that at times I realize that I haven’t ate because of all the work. Overall
Throughout the last couple of weeks, the Wellness Course impacted my experience in Sumer Bridge tremendously. I know it may seem cliché to say that I have entered a new phrase in my life, but that’s the honest truth. I have myself experiencing new challenges and experiencing the struggle that comes with it. I learned that there is a whole new level of stress I have never experienced and that there are much more to experience in the future. The Wellness Course has allowed me to cope with all these changes in my life, academically and emotionally. It has given me the opportunity to reflect on my life as I move through this transition of my life. I am more self-aware of common struggles of Berkeley students and finally learned to embrace the beauty
It was interesting to observe my baseline and intervention stress levels to see how it can change, just by implementing something as simple as exercising. Even though, I stated previously that I believe that numbers cannot be the only factor in determining if an intervention is successful or not, it is satisfying having a visual reference to see if it work, did not work, or where adjustments and/or improvements can be made. This was a positive experience for me because not only did it help me reduce my stress, but I also lost a few pounds in the process. This has made me want to continue exercising, which comes with many benefits and I will attempt to continue tracking my results and reach my goal of my average stress for the day to be at no stress (0) or little stress
This course has affected my development as a student in many ways. It has taught me the importance of being stress free. I have learned that using the time and stress management tools and strategies has helped me get closer to my goals. Achieving my goals depends mainly on me and being less stressful. Time and stress management go hand to hand and one doesn’t work without the other. I learned to become better at time management. This has allowed me to get more important task done and put off the not so important ones. This course has prepared me very well for my academic success. It has taught me about my learning styles and what works best for me. Although I’m a visual/ auditory learner, I sometimes find myself wanting to take things hands on. These are some of the things that has affected me in my development as a student.
A day or two before class I reviewed the syllabus and handouts to see the details of what each day would be like and the specifics of each assignment. After reviewing I was definitely ready for two days of knowledge on learning to become more relaxed and less stressed. Being a wife, mother of two, daughter, sister, friend, relative, full-time student and employee is not an easy task. Many days I’m overwhelmed by my thoughts alone of what needs to be done daily, things such as household chores, homework, extra-curricular activities, church affiliations, and work deadlines. With my very
Now that I have completed Pathways to lifelong learning, I have come to realize that the extreme stress I endured as mentioned earlier was due to my poor time management skills as well as my poor stress management. I
