The purpose of our research group is to identify issues that students are having with studying. Our team collected research for our literature review and evaluated challenges within student study habits. Distractions, stress and different learning styles were the main struggles that students deal with when studying. We than conducted two peer focus groups to gain insight to issues that actual students were having when studying. Both of these methods of research were completed in order to pinpoint important issues that students were having with studying and create a product that assists student study habits. The initial focus group session was an exploratory session to identify and investigate problems students were currently having when studying. In this session, we concluded that stress and distractions were important factors in students struggles with studying. We did identify another issue that students have, that they feel they need an outline or guideline of what to study in order to succeed on tests. From these issues our team identified two possible product concepts that would help students organize and study more effectively. In our preparation for the second focus group, our research team developed two possible product concepts. The first concept that was discussed was an online tutoring service that is available in real-time. The participants pointed out that having a tutor is only beneficial for certain topics, and they would not need this service every

The first two chapters of “What the Best College Students Do” cover several topics. Throughout the chapters, the lives and experiences of different college students are explored. A reoccurring theme in the book is the concept of learning styles. Essentially, the three learning styles are memorization, comprehension, and strategy. According to the author, comprehension is the most effective style of learning. While everyone will possess one of these three learning styles, it is not impossible for someone to adjust to another style. Additionally, the author elaborates on academic ideas such as independence, grades, and outside influences.
A marathon of study sessions, rereading your textbook and highlighting your notes may not be the best way to excel this school year. Published in The Wall Street Journal, Sue Shellenbarger’s article Before You Study, Ask for Help, focuses on the best way for studying material you learned in the classroom. As a writer for "Work & Family" Column she provides solutions to common dilemmas people face at work and at home. This article is geared towards student in their work environment: school. Shellenbarger claimed that, those who “study smart- planning ahead, quizzes themselves on the material and actively seeking out help when they don’t understand,” (Shellenbarger) do extremely well.

After seeing the video of professor Chew’s talk on “How to get the most out of studying, part 1” I realize the mistakes I’m doing when I’m studying. I been doing the same mistake since high school and now I know why I was struggling so much in some classes. Because I was multitasking most of the time when I was studying and being over confidents about knowing the topic I wasted a lot of time learning.
Throughout my first two years at Saint Xavier, I have continued to successfully manage my time and achieve first honors. The first step for me to become intellectually competent is to create a study plan. Towards the beginning of my freshman year, I created a calendar planing out my events, fitting in School, service, family, and sports. From then on, I have planned my homework out everyday, ordering my studies from hardest to easiest. I organize my homework this way because I am a much more diligent worker after school, then before I go to bed. I consistently work on my homework throughout the day, during study hall, before sport, and at home. I use my study hall to my advantage, planning meetings with teachers or getting advice from the librarians. All the time management I do, helps me to study smarter and not

Based off of their indicated availability as well as mine, I will schedule a time and day for a focus group. To confirm the focus group meeting, I will send an email or text message to each student with the time and day I selected. Two days before the scheduled focus group meeting, I will send a friendly reminder to all participants either by email or text message. During this time, I will continue transcribing and

College is exciting transition for freshman as they can meet new people and be open to opportunities in their life; however, college is very demanding when it comes to school work. Freshmen tend to underestimate their school work and end up stacking their homework, leading them to become stressed and develop unhealthy habits. Sleep deprivation is a common habit among freshmen as they stay up all night to study for an exam or write a paper. If students feel like they have too much work, they burn themselves out and end up losing the motivation to finish their homework, making their grade fall. With all this work, freshmen spend most of their time at home or in the library doing their homework and feel too exhausted to socialize. College is supposed to be a thrilling experience for freshmen, but they tend to form bad habits that makes college more difficult and do not know how to get rid of them. Freshmen need to know developing good sleeping habits, motivating themselves, and finding the time to socialize is important in maintaining their health and social life throughout college. Freshman should set a sleep schedule for themselves, create a reward system for themselves when completing their work, and join a club or organization in order to manage their school life and enjoy the exciting experience of college. A Focus group is defined as a research technique that collects data through a group interaction, on a given topic from the researcher. Along with this definition are some essential components. Firstly, it states that, focus groups are research methods devoted to data collection. Secondly, it signifies the interaction of group discussion as a source of data. Lastly, it acknowledges the active role of researchers in establishing the group discussion in order to collect data (David, 1996.p.130).
Cramming is often a studying habit that most college students, as well as high school students, turn to the night before an exam. In Shelby McIntyre and J. Michael Munson’s journal entry “Exploring Cramming Student Behaviors, Beliefs, and Learning Retention in the Principle of Marketing
A weakness in my learning strategy is that I don’t study regularly. So, I cram up everything the day before a test or two days before a test. To tell you the truth I don’t even have a learning strategy. The topic I am going to choose to help my problem is minimizing distractions because, in my opinion, this is what makes me not study regularly. The “Success by Design” states that to not have distractions while studying one should look for a place where you won’t be distracted, a secluded place with a working environment. While studying one should turn off one’s cell phone and do not sit in a place where one is going to get to relax to work.
