School is a place to learn, grow and acquire the necessary fundamentals to become a productive adult in society. I believe school uniformity create an environment where kids can learn and focus on their education. School uniforms should be required in grades pre-kindergarten to twelfth grade. I recognize that school uniforms create structure and discipline, equality and a sense of belonging amongst each other, and lastly school uniforms are cost effective. There have been many on-going debates for and against school uniforms for years. In the following paragraphs I will support my claims on why school uniforms should be required. In high school back in 1997 our school did not require for us to wear uniforms. Everyone was free to wear what they wanted and school staff was quite lenient with the dress code. Amongst my peers I noticed a lot of kids seem to have no discipline in their life, school was not a priority for them. Our school had a very high drop-out rate, tardies and absences were also high. I believe that if our school would have required the students to wear uniforms, it could have made some type of difference. Uniforms are a good idea but at the same time they do not help students with their work, or to graduate, and they are uncomfortable after a certain age. Uniforms do not help a student in class because they do not make a student smarter or more engaged. It all depends on the student’s decision if they want to try in class and if they want to be involved at school. Secondly, when it comes to graduation rates and discipline incidents, school uniforms do not play a role at all. Schools that do not require uniforms and schools that do require uniforms have similar statistics of graduating students and discipline. It really depends on the parents and the way the teacher teaches, which impacts the student’s life. In order for students to succeed in school, they need to feel comfortable so they would focus more on their work instead of their clothes. In addition, each person has a different style and uniforms do not let students express themselves. After intermediate school, students should be able to decide what to wear as long as they follow the dress code. In conclusion, school uniforms should not be required because the clothing does not help a student get better grades, or graduate, and they are uncomfortable to wear.

Social status will also be less of an issue because everyone would be wearing the same clothing. Uniforms will improve students’ individuality because they will have to express themselves through their personality and attitude, rather than through a brand name pair of jeans or an expensive pair of tennis shoes. Wearing uniforms will allow the teachers to form a better perception of a student based on how they act not by how they dressed. Students social standing would be based more on individual character. Wearing uniforms will help improve a student’s self-esteem because they will not feel pressured to dress a certain way. Students feel pressured by other students when they can’t dress like they dress. If all students are dressed the same, everyone will feel equal.

The benefits of school uniforms are countless. Uniforms can help eliminate peer pressure among students and can also help students and parents save time and money. Violence can also be greatly reduced simply by wearing school uniforms. Although the wearing of uniforms has been widely practiced throughout European, African, and South American public schools, the practice has primarily been within private schools systems throughout the United States until recently (West). All public schools should be required to wear uniforms in order to promote a better all-around environment for students and administration alike.

School uniforms not only affect how students perceive themselves, but additionally show what will happen if school uniforms are allowed in all schools. Without school uniforms students can get bullied because of what they are wearing. This could affect how they perform not only socially, but also academically. If schools nationwide made a requirement to have school uniforms, this could help students worry less about their appearances and more about their education. Many studies are showing that if students are allowed to wear what they want, they can wear clothes that threatens other individuals. With school uniforms we can protect students, decrease crime, and enhance school’s systems academically.

For students, uniforms are beneficial for several reasons. Educators who encourage uniforms believe that they positively contribute to help students' behavior. They believe that when all students are dressed the same, kids are less focused on fashion and more focus on learning.
