1. Introduction and Theoretical framework 1.1 stylistics Stylistics is the linguistic study of style in language. There has been a long debate among scholars about the role and definition of stylistics .Many scholars have tried to give their insights about the role of stylistics to the field of textual analysis. Coyle ( 1993) states that the purpose of stylistics is to uncover the literary language used by the author to formulate his message. stylistics then is concerned with revealing the aesthetic and artistic aspects of a text. Simpson ( 2004) provides a similar understanding of stylistics. He asserts that the role of the discipline is to explore the creativity in language usage . Simpson further …show more content…
The analyst can also investigate the use of definite or indefinite articles, demonstratives such as this or that, and examine the frequency in the usage of certain grammatical constructions ( comparative, superlative,…..). The researcher can examine the use of pronouns in the selected speeches. There have been researchers that have done studies and articles written about how politicians use pronouns in a strategic way to show power, solidarity or authority, for example if a speaker uses mostly the pronoun we, this will indicate his attempt to create a sense of unity with his audience. 1.2.3 Figures of speech Martha J. Kolln (1999) defines figurative language as the language that expresses meaning in nonliteral terms , characterized by figures of speech such as metaphors , similes , analogies and personification . For the analysis of the figures of speech in a text, leech and short provide the following categories: 1: Grammatical and lexical devices: Such as repetition ( anaphora ) and parallelism. 2: Phonological schemes: such as phonological patterns of rhyme, alliteration, assonance,
Style and tone is the sixth concept used by Postman. All subjects of knowledge are like genres. They share certain qualities that are distinctive to the subject matter. A man of science could not write about history
An author’s writing style expresses a different view to their story. Many authors vary in their writing style is shown in the story My First Free Summer, the poem Exile, the poem All American Girl and the short story Antojos. Alvarez’s writing style consists of many factors because she uses imagery, figurative language, and point of view to convey a theme.
To read like a writer means knowing in advanced type of writing will be assigned. This is beneficial, Bunn argues, because when reading like a writer, knowing the style assigned, allows one to look for specific techniques in writing that they could adopt in their own work. To understand how piece was written, or to look back on his architect analogy, it is important to ask questions, assessing what “construction” techniques were effective in building a text. Before reading, one should ask himself who the audience is and the author's purpose in writing. While reading the texts itself, Bunn recommends looking at the style of language used and the effectiveness of evidence as well as the parts that don’t work or are confusing. While reading like a writer and asking these questions, Bunn encourages students to look for whether aspects are appropriate and effective as well as the positive or negative effect they have on readers. Bunn, in recognizing that every word choice made in a text has a certain effect, encourages readers to look critically at that effect in order to decide what strategies work should be adopted in their own
A literary technique is a device employed in literature to add depth to a writer’s work. These techniques can be obvious, such as the technique of rhyme in a poem, or subtle, such as juxtaposition, which can go unnoticed by the reader. In The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien uses many such techniques to provide more depth to his book. Four literary techniques used by Tim O’Brien are symbolism, pathetic fallacy, irony, and juxtaposition.
Figurative language is a language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When the author uses literary language, he or she is stating the facts as they are. Figurative language is very common in poetry, and is also used in prose and nonfiction as well. In the stories “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myer and “ The Contender” by Robert Lipsyte the authors use figurative language to describe the mood, setting, and the characters.
While reading a well written story I am conscious of the atmosphere the author creates through the particular style they choose to use. As a reader, I am able to admire the way in which the writer presents their characters and setting, and be conscious of the overall voice used in their writing. The "voice" used in the writing is often the most obvious aspect of an author's style to detect. The author's "voice" is the way
Analyzing Stylistic Choices helps you see the linguistic and rhetorical choices writers make to inform or convince readers.
One example of this contrast includes: “Look, we don’t get to be cool very often. We take it where we can get it.” (Giffels 12). This line shows the way he writes simply using a generic term such as ‘cool’ and then one example where he uses switches to a more advanced level can be seen on page fourteen. Giffels’ describes a day at his office with descriptive detail: “I was working in my office on a gray Sunday afternoon near the end of the spring semester, chilly gusts sweeping at the windowpanes.” Another reason his writing style is unique is because Giffels tries to target as large an audience as possible throughout his book. The reason for this broad style is so that it will appeal to readers by their preferences. Therefore, his unique style allows the readers to be more intrigued in the book because of this one may come to the conclusion that Giffels’ choice to use this style to appeal to as wide a margin as he possibly could, was a smart

Style is choosing how to express your ideas. Contributes to the writer’s content, message, or emotional appeal.
In “To Read like a Writer” Mike Bunns introduces how writing is “a series of choices” with an account of his past as an employee at a theatre. As he was trying to concentrate on his reading, he had an epiphany that literary works are all “a series of choices”(Bunns 72). He then transitions to his main claim of how reading like a writer allows for the reader to determine whether or not to adopt the same style as the piece that the text may have. He breaks this down into subsections that readers need to observe before they tackle the writing, such as context, genre, and publication. Additionally, he points out the necessity to makes notes while reading the
A final feature in the text which is vital for creating an emotional connection with the audience is the style in which it is written as it conveys Galloways personality, which allows the reader to understand the meaning of the text and relate to it, making it easier to connect with. The first element of style that Galloway uses to her advantage is formality; rather than writing it in a complex and serious manner, the writer presents the text in a light-hearted way making it more accessible and enjoyable. Aspects of the text which contribute towards are informality are the use of slang - "LURV", "stunk like a month-old kipper"; use of short sentences - "This did not trouble me. I was a biddable child. Most are."; and parenthesis - "(there were no men in our house)". These stylistic features all mirror the structure of natural, spoken language, therefore the reader feels as
