Substantive Selection Criteria: Strong People and Communication Skills I am beginning to establish strong people and communication skills through my part time job as a Woolworths cashier. By working in this customer service orientated position, I am frequently exposed to the general public and through these interactions, am building the necessary skills for this selection criterion. So far I have learnt to negotiate in situations of conflict, I have used teaching skills to train new staff and can communicate effectively in a team environment. To further build on these skills, I plan on volunteering for the Salvation Army’s Street Level program. This program focuses on supporting and encouraging people to change and grow; whether it be overcoming addiction, homelessness or changing their relationships and quality of life. It would also allow me to obtain a deeper understanding of a demographic often susceptible to crisis and criminal activity. As this volunteer work is quite flexible, I could begin during my tertiary education, and maintain my involvement throughout my career. On top of this, it would be useful to join the Justice Mentor Program (JuMP), run by the QUT Justice Department during the later years of my studies. By advising and mentoring first year university students on Justice content and assessment, I would be improving my confidence, people and communication skills, which I could later apply when advising clientele working as a family/criminal Solicitor. Substantive Selection Criteria: A Sound Practical and Legal Knowledge By currently being enrolled in a Justice degree at the
The charity I work for is committed to involving people who use the care and support services in recruitment. The level of active participation and involvement will be determined by the individuals themselves with support from their current support staff and manager. The right person for the job will be recruited, ensuring they best fit the necessary skills, knowledge, expertise and qualifications as set out in the person specification and
The need for a substance abuse recovery home in Starke County, Indiana is a need that is unmistakable in the county based on the hefty number of individuals that suffer from substance abuse and dependency in the county which is clearly displayed by the recent number of crimes that are related to or involve illicit and prescription drugs. In attempt to meet this need and create an opportunity for individuals suffering from substance abuse and dependency to receive local substance abuse treatment in a recovery home the proposal will be presented to several stakeholders within the Starke County community. The term stakeholder “refers to those people who are affected, or could be affected, by the service” (Canadian Career Development Foundation, n.d.) that is being proposed. The proposal for the creation of a substance abuse recovery home will be presented to five key stakeholders including Ms. Becky Anspach the director of Community Services of Starke County, Starke County Community Corrections director of operations Mr. Robert Hinojosa, Ms. Dee Lynch the director of the Indiana Department of Child Services of Starke County, Porter Starke Services facilitator of intensive outpatient program treatment (IOP), and Ms. Rhonda Adcock the director of Starke County CASA.
The program is conducted around shared experiences, strength and hope, through individuals who are recovering from their addictions.

An application can only do so much to reveal someone’s character. I believe my application leaves much room for discussion, it does not fully describe me. As my resume indicates, I am actively committed to improving the community and helping others. What it fails to illustrate is my resilience, dedication, cooperativeness, and my confidence. I go into situations with an open mind, positivity and a dedication to build strong relationships with those around me. If there are obstacles stopping me from doing so, I try to overcome them. Recently, I was hired at a catering hall with absolutely no clue what to expect. Instead of being wary and apprehensive, I jumped right in; albeit some mistakes, I became increasingly confident as the evening progressed.
This program consists of following a set of recovery steps, which will help one achieve abstinence of alcohol. One can also get a sponsor, which will help guide them through all the steps. The program is completely free the only requirement is the desire to stop drinking. As nurses or any health care provider I think it is our duty to provide this type of information and to help educate others on how the program helps maintain sobriety. It’s important for a nurse to provide support with their client through this journey and also to their family and friends. Nurses need to provide encouragement and explain that this is a process that will take time and not happen

Andy attended the Thoughtful Change group every week and was always on time and fully engaged. Andy was a very active member in the group and demonstrated a commitment to learning. Because Andy made great strides and was a dedicated and active member and had great staff reports from the center, he was able to have longer time out of the residential center and was given additional phone time. Andy has continued to grow and has not engaged in any criminal behavior since the group has ended.
Working with organizations such as Salvation Army and CARE Clinic has provided me the honor of making a difference in my community. Meeting the needs of individuals is my way of investing in their future. Maria's House and Hope Harbor provided personal interactions with individuals recovering from substance abuse. Accordingly, their insights developed a greater understanding of how addictions begin and why they are difficult to overcome. Observing men and women working daily to maintain sobriety expanded my perception of those in recovery.
and interview with Mr. Martinez was not only an enjoyable experience, but informative as well. Program planning was demonstrated with real world applications. I was able to gather enough information to conclude my ideas on the pros and cons of the agency. Perhaps most importantly, some avenues of career opportunities were demonstrated with a Health Promotion degree in the substance abuse field. Since I closed my Three Quarter Way House in Miami in late 1997 and drifted away from the recovery community, I have had a longing to be involved again. This has formed part of my reason for continuing my educational pursuits. Mr. Martinez and his staff were generous with their time, interaction, and advice. On Mr. Martinez’s advice, I plan to pursue to become a Certified Peer Support Specialist to compliment my degree. Also, I plan to attend the Burke County Substance Abuse Network breakfast with Mr. Martinez on the last Friday of the month. This assignment proved to be a most valuable
And finally, plugs on the lesser-known cable network Cozi TV target middle-aged and elderly viewers by focusing on issues related to older adult life, including health and finances. Only a few notable television series feature the elderly in starring roles (i.e. The Golden Girls), so older adults may find comfort in watching programs from the 1960s to the 1990s. The network’s website states, “Well-known shows like Frasier, Will & Grace, Little House on the Prairie, The Munsters, Columbo and Murder, She Wrote are featured on the network. … The past and present have come together on Cozi TV” (Cozi TV). Many viewers are retired, and they often watch their
The Campaign for Youth Justice (CFYJ) is the agency that I want to volunteer for. Its located in DC and they help raise awareness for at risk kids. I was interested in this agency because DC/PG is my home, I want to give back. I’ve seen good people/friends get caught up in robberies, drugs, and guns or just hanging with the wrong people. I want to help the youth because I made it from those troubled circumstances, I don’t want to see kids with potential get caught up with the law. This agency raises the awareness about the negative influence of a youth getting prosecuted in an adult criminal justice system and sending them to jail at the youthful age of 16-20. I want the experience working with youth mainly teenagers though. I want to help
Discuss what qualities you possess that would make you a quality candidate for the Peer Support Council?
During the first phase participants are given basic recovery principles and skills needed to overcome their substance dependency and are asked to commit to a Christ-centered recovery plan (phoenixrescuemission.org, n.d.). During the second phase program members attend classes and counseling to identify destructive patterns and behaviors. They also commit to making amends and take responsibility for damage relationships or harm that they have caused themselves and others (phoenixrescuemission.org, n.d.). Additionally, at the end of this phase participants begin to focus on their talents and skills that will help them lead a new life. They are offered training in areas that they may be deficient. The third phase prepares program members for their independence by offering them three options. Participants will either begin pursuing and maintaining employment, start a mentorship in Christian leadership and receive service responsibilities, or began intensive re-entry training for those who are married, face legal mandates, or must deal with health difficulties (phoenixrescuemission.org, n.d.). Those clients who wish to receive additional support are offered six months of aftercare, during which they complete monthly progress reports and participate in meetings with the program’s alumni association (phoenixrescuemission.org,
