One major health promotion topic that I would like to discuss is alcohol. Alcohol is the substance most commonly used by adolescents and is associated with the top four leading causes of morbidity and mortality among teens (Kann, et al., 2014). The adolescent stage has been identified as a period when the young adults is at the peak risks for onset and intensification of alcohol and marijuana use (Weitzman, et al., 2015). It is important that such health problem is addressed during this stage of development. When adequate education or instruction is given to teens, some of the important health and social problems that either start or peak during adolescence could be
The health promotion initiative is science and system design to improve and promote health in a specific community. I have a very strong experience in the Bronx where I have spent most of my time and raise my kids and a careful study of the inhabitants who are serious to make earns meet are lucking the time to take care of their personal life. Taking my formal neighborhood (white plain road) for example is an area being underestimated by so many people because of selling of weed, drugs, prostitution, shoplifting etc. But for one to live in that area, you need to have either a good job or do double in other to meet your needs. As a result of that, the inhabitants do not have time for themselves, an example is to eat well, exercise visits their
Health promotion summary. Holbrook, Arizona is a rural community of 5,000 in Arizona that borders the Navajo Nation. Although the population is 38% Navajo, the local school district is Title I (indicating high poverty levels), with a student demographic of roughly 64% Navajo (HUSD3, 2014). Significant disadvantage and unique cultural environments generate a sample population unlike previous public health initiatives concerning tobacco; thus, a multi-leveled approach is appropriate to address tobacco use in the community setting (Hawkins et al., 2008). The aim of this promotion, Cutting the Slack, is to use the community as a facilitator to forge a sustainable program that fosters a protracted tobacco-free community youth environment. Use of local health professionals to train identified leaders among teens and adolescents as change agents promotes community buy-in (Latkin & Knowlton, 2015). Peer advocates have the ability to increase self-agency by promoting personal achievements
3. Use teachers and role models to inform teenagers of the dangers of binge drinking on health in later life. Introduce a school based compulsory program, as and information session for 14-17 year olds.
Equality in everything, including health issues, has to be the main feature of the modern world. National health programs of the US operate to ensure adequate and timely treatment of all citizens. Nevertheless, health indicators of some racial and ethnic groups are significantly worse than of the white Americans. It applies to the Hispanic Americans and significantly affects their lives. The current health status of this minority is far from satisfactory and needs improvements through existing programs and the development of new approaches to address
The next interview was of an Asian American family. This is a military family, the father meet, married and brought back to the United States a 23 year old Vietnamese woman. Family is vital to this Asian American family and respect is expected. Over the years, the mother has adapted to some western ways but maintains certain culture values and passed them on to her children. Diet plays a huge part in their health maintenance and protection. The diet manly consists of rice, vegetables and fish. Along with diet, exercise and staying fit is a big part of their ethnic background. The mother stated to me “Don’t you see all the Asian ladies at the gym? We take pride in staying fit.” To them their body is a temple and needs to be cared for. Spirituality of mind body and soul is another significant part of their health. Partaking in meditation, massage therapy and acupuncture are ways to rid the body of imbalance and place it back in balance to fight illness and diseases. Illness may be attributed to organic or physical problems an imbalance of yin and yang, an obstruction of chi (life energy), a failure to be in harmony with nature, punishment for immoral behavior (in this or past lives), or a curse placed by an offended spirit ("Vietnamese Cultural Profile — EthnoMed," n.d.). While this family is westernized in some ways, by going to the doctor and
The methods being used to inform early twenty-first century youth about alcohol misuse are ineffective and impractical. Alcohol educations programs are mainly about scaring teens out of any type of alcohol consumption (McCardell), which in reality makes drinking attractive to them because of the mystery involved (Minimum Drinking Age). As a result, the programs intended to prevent underage drinking actually have the opposite effect (Ogilvie); instead, alcohol education should be based on the reality of the bingeing environments teens and young adults are dealing with (McCardell). Because of the higher drinking age, high school and collegiate educators are not able to
Health promotion seems to be a thing of the past as more and more health care providers have their sights set on treatment instead of preventative strategies. However, health promotion is severely needed for everyone, but most especially individuals with intellectual disabilities and special needs. This demographic of individuals comes with their own set of needs and barriers, and are often at a higher predisposition for higher rates of illness; yet they deserve and have the same rights to effective illness prevention and health care as anyone else.
With the well-designed, clear targeted health promotion interventions, it may be able to achieve a reduction of alcohol consumption in young age group. The health promotion interventions are particularly important to identify the population group under “drinking risk”,
Communities have noticed problems with juvenile drinking and driving and started The Saving Lives Project, which was planned to reduce alcohol impaired driving and related problems (Holder 2). This development uses media and education to get the knowledge out about the risk of drinking. The communities that are a part of this project have shown a 40 percent decrease in alcohol related crashes (Holder 2). The project has been shown that older teen’s ages sixteen to nineteen are now less likely to drink and drive after learning about the risks in alcohol classes. Colleges that have set a week to focus on education and prevention of alcohol have shown a five-fold increase (Gonzalez 4).
According to the lecture, health promotion is “the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move towards a state of optimal health.” Health promotion embodies health protection, health education and health prevention. Health prevention has three levels which include primary prevention, secondary prevention and tertiary prevention. Primary prevention looks to control risk factors through either education or raising awareness to halt an illness or disease. For example, the Johnson article about tobacco warning sign is an example of primary prevention.
Health is defined as a state in which human needs are met in an autonomic way, and is not limited to the absence of disease or disablement (V. Henderson). Optimal health is a lively, self-motivated equilibrium of physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and social well-being. The concept of health promotion delineates the method of empowering people to increase control over, and to advance their own overall health.
Current attitudes towards health promotion in young people are significantly understood by the importance of the determinates of health such as income, level of education, cultural beliefs, geographic location and employment. For an effective long term outcome on health promotion it involves several approaches to bring about this change. This includes lifestyle and behavioural approaches, public health approaches and preventative medical approaches.
Every single person living on this planet should take health promotion seriously and strive for a healthier diet, exercise regime and a more relaxed lifestyle. The main reason I believe this is because health promotion is an area in life where it coincides with biology, psychology and medicine. These three aspects are essential towards a healthy and long lasting lifestyle. When health promotion is ever mentioned in a discussion usually biology, psychology and medicine is also brought into the arena as well.
An example of primary prevention using the harm reduction approach is a good method to begin with young people. Mathre (2008) describes this approach as promotion of healthy lifestyles, education about alcohol, guidelines for its use, and dangers of drinking. Examples used by Mathre consisted of community-based activities aimed at substance abuse protection, such as organizing student assistant programs (such as Student’s Against Drunk Driving), promoting non- drinking parties, and teaching and reinforcing anti-drinking peer-pressure skills.
“The major goals of health promotion are to help people of all ages stay healthy, optimize health in cases of chronic disease or disability, and create healthy environments” (Pender et al., 2015). This health promotion project is designed to identify and reduce the risk factors associated with several illnesses and disease processes. This project will focus on changing lifestyle behaviors and providing up to date education for the patient to make the best informed decision regarding her environment, health behaviors, and developing a support system with her primary care physician.
