This personality disorder is diagnosed in the presence of grandiosity and the need to be admired and appreciated. Narcissism can be defined as “ a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultra confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that 's vulnerable to the slightest criticism” (Narcissistic personality disorder, n.d.). With this disorder people generally are unhappy and disappointed when they are not privileged to special favors or given admiration they believe they deserve. Everyone is born with a natural sense of pride and self-importance. According to Sanderson (2015), pride can be defined as, “A pleasant, sometimes exhilarating, emotion that results from a positive self-evaluation” (p. 35). Judging by that definition, pride seems as though it is a positive emotion that helps to build confidence and self-worth. However, pride can also be a very dangerous feeling that could possibly lead to a very unfortunate and incurable mental illness, known as Narcissistic Personality Disorder. This disorder, otherwise known as, NPD, is a personality trait that reflects an inflated and grandiose self-concept (Buffardi & Campbell, 2008). Basically, someone with this disorder thinks very highly of himself or herself, which typically results in a lack of empathy for others. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the preferred treatment for Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) because specific biomedical approaches for this illness do not exist, and leaving it untreated could lead to other psychological problems for the individual, such as, depression, antisocial personality disorder, and drug/alcohol abuse.

This observation indicates that recent culture is surviving in a way by these dreams and the attachment to celebrities functions as a lifeline. The emergence of worthless individuals during the 1980s and 1990s, whose achievements are questionable came instantly through entertainment and mainly advertising. This fact implies that people’s values and beliefs have completely transformed.
All theories of human behavior are not alike because they do not hold equal status in dimensions nor in the depth of research and information that is provided. Freud’s original thoughts for Ego psychology are still prevalent because it is one of the earliest contemporary perspectives that molded the fieldwork to further understand narcissism. From his 1914 work On Narcissism, Freud aligned narcissism with libido theory and stated that it grew and diffused into object relationships. Shortly after, Freud formulated the developmental sequence that included the autoerotic phase which is coined as the primary narcissistic condition. Overtime, Freud viewed narcissism as a widespread developmental process that is continuous through human beings lives,
Tim Elmore in an article titled, The Inverse Relationship Between Empathy and Narcissism. “Narcissism is on the rise in kids today. One study found that one in four young people were classified as narcissistic, according to a widely accepted psychological test. That number has doubled in the last thirty years. Another study reported that since the 1980s, there’s been a 40% decline among young people in empathy, a personality attribute inversely related to narcissism. In nationwide reports, it takes teens longer to get ready in the morning than at any time since we’ve been studying this topic. They are distracted by the mirror and often blinded to the needs of others
The Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on 22 January 1901. While in the preceding Romantic period poetry had been the dominant genre, it was the novel that was most important in the Victorian period. The old Gothic novels that came out of the late 19th century are the first examples of the genre of fantastic fiction (Victorian literature). John Bowen, Professor of 19th century literature at the University of York, describes the Gothic genre as a “particularly strange and perverse family of texts which themselves are full of strange families, irrigated with scenes of rape and incest, and surrounded by marginal, uncertain and illegitimate members” (Bowen). Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture
Despite their actions, they will not feel a sense of empathy towards the people they hurt because narcissistic individuals think the victims deserved it for stopping them from achieving their goals. Surprisingly, narcissistic individuals are always felt threatened by other people from their surroundings. Due to that, they are likely to respond to any perceived threats in an exaggerated way (Narcissism, 2008). Hence, narcissism is not exactly a trait you would probably found great in an individual.

As they were in middle class, which was higher class than what my siblings and I were at, I wondered if this would apply to them. With my experience, I believe it would since they were of higher class than us and those narcissists would be boastful about accomplishments and possessions. Here, some readers may be saying that social class does not necessarily cause one to be narcissistic. I am not saying that not all those of higher class are narcissists, but rather that it can put them for a higher risk of becoming narcissistic. Other factors, such as social media and parenting, could also contribute to one becoming narcissistic.
