The way parents raise children may affect them while growing up and this will be transferred over generations and it’s most likely to never end. Being punished as a young child, life seemed harsh and uneasy. The way parents would yell at you, tell you what to do, what not to do, and they always seemed to have gotten in the way of doing what us children wanted to do but it emotionally affects the personality of children while growing up for good or bad. In the poem “This Be The Verse” by Philip Larkin, Larkin expresses his emotions in a strong and direct lenguage towards his parents and the way they judge and blame him for it’s mistakes. His strong lenguage demonstrates with no doubt us that parents have a negative effect on their children and it affects them drastically. Junot Diaz's short story “Fiesta, 1980” gives an insight into the everyday life of a lower class family, a family with a troubled young boy, Yunior and a strong, abusive father, Papi. Bad parent-child relationships could lead to depression, low self-steem and children could be more prone to criminal behavior. Jamaica Kincaid’s short story “Girl” illustrates gender discrimination, receiving the instructions from her mother on how to behave and act to not be judge. It illustrates the high level of submissive in women’s there was in her culture.
Neglected children and those who are exposed to abuse are more likely to be prosecuted for juvenile delinquency. Netflix series “ La Viuda Negra” relates the story of
Children that are born into poverty and less than desirable conditions are more times than not, destined to become involved in the juvenile justice system. This may be due the child’s destructive behaviors or for placement out of concern for the child’s safety and well-being. Neglect and abuse is more prevalent in disadvantaged environments and causes sometimes-irreversible emotional problems. For whatever reason the child enters the system, we know that it is not a place for youth to grow, be nurtured and become productive members of society.
How not having a father figure affected their emotional and phycological well-being. Also, it taught the readers that sometimes having a father does not necessarily, mean they are a father figure, for example Mr. Clutter, he was there for his family and children, but he chose other things to be proud of instead of his children, he felt that his achievements were more important than his children’s
Modern culture promotes having fun and doing what feels good in the moment. Connie has poor communication with her family, shown by her rebellious behavior and lack of respect for her parents. She chooses to distance herself from her family which results in them not being there when she needs them the most. Parents are supposed to be protectors and leaders in their children’s lives and when these key aspects are not present, a window is opened for the victimization of youth. The consequences of such situations result in a predicament like Connie’s and becomes an immense concern for the effects that modern culture has on
Most parents impose very high expectations on their children. While some expect their sons to become professionals in respected fields, others encourage their daughters to find good husbands. The parents impose these expectations without consulting their children. In most situations, the expectations of the parent deviate from the dreams of the child. This is what becomes evident when one reads Sandra Cisneros’ Only Daughter and Amy Tan’s Mother Tongue. In these short stories, the expectations that the parents of the narrators elicit mixed reactions. The expectations of the narrators’ parents hold them back from attaining personal goals while causing them to desperately desire approval and eventually accepting and embracing their parents..
In “Girl”, by Jamaica Kincaid, the mother is warning her daughter about what to expect, and how to act, in society. The story represents a time when the daughter knew that her mother loved her enough to spend the time to give her the advice, but is also emotionally distant. I believe this to be representative of Kincaid’s life, and how after her brother’s were born she felt that her mother did not have enough time for her.
The article I found titled, “In Defense of Children and Youth: Reforming Juvenile Justice Policies” is an interesting one because it focuses on the changes that need to be made within the justice system for juvenile delinquents. The article states that the many changes being done or already enacted in order for the juvenile justice system to become fair and protect the youth better rather than treat them like mini adults. “US Attorney General Eric Holder asked citizens to ‘think about children’ and the consequences of violence and trauma in their lives” (Benekos, Merlo, & Puzzanchera, 2013). The article focuses on trying to help children before things get to the criminal level, the authors mention the many child abuse cases encased in the media and cases that happen without media attention are the culprits as to why
Margaret Brady Mrs. Papageorge 10 Honors English Period 3 6 December 2017 State and Nature Society has taught everyone that the proper way to raise a child is by their parents teaching them appropriate values and beliefs. Parents, whether they realize it or not, do have a lot of influence on their young. The way children are raised truly does build them into the young adults that they will soon become. But what no one realizes, is how easily children get shaped by other things as well, such as our society and surroundings. But what if children get ripped away from everything they know: their society, their home, and their values?
The statistical evidence of young female juveniles describes by journalist Linda Lowen. Lowen says young girls who were subjected to many different mental health issues and some form of abuse have often led to delinquent conduct. Abuse, such as, physical, mental, sexual, and emotional abuse is the most commonplace behind a juvenile’s girl’s negative behavior. In the United States, seventy-three percent of young girls have been abused. Just over forty percent of young girls have been victims of sexual assault or rape. Girls who have been abused or neglected are twice as likely to be arrested as other girls (Lowen, 2014).
In the criminal justice world, juvenile offenders are of particular concern. In 2014 alone it is estimated that over one million juveniles were arrested in America (Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention). According to the National Institute of Justice, juveniles who begin a life of delinquency early are more likely to continue that trend into adulthood, and that once they enter the adult criminal justice system; they are more likely to become worse in their criminal conduct. While most juveniles are likely to stop delinquency by their early twenties, those who continue are more likely to engage in increasingly violent offenses. Maltreatment of juveniles is also a concern in America. In 2014, an estimated 700,000 children were referred to child welfare agencies across the United States.
In the essay, “Can We Love Our Battering Fathers?” Helen H. Gordon creates a sharp image of despair and pain in her family. By reflecting on her past with her family she paints a picture for the readers to imagine what she experienced. This is a reflective essay because as she chooses a Father’s Day card for her father she reflects on her past with him. The main cause of her despair is her father which is demonstrated through his attitude and treatment towards his family, especially her mother. She creates the feeling of haunting despair through the use of diction, allusions, and foreshadowing.
We all want to believe that our individual personalities and beliefs are a result of our personal choices and experiences. However, this isn't entirely true. As much as many of us would hate to admit, we are greatly influenced by the choices of our parents and the major events in their lives that shaped them. As children, we internalize our parents’ words, actions and beliefs. By the time we are adults, these values have already been integrated into our own on a subconscious level.
The growth and development of a child is highly influenced by the character of the people around him or her and the environment where they are raised since they easily take the behavior of the people around them. Their psychological development is highly dependent on their experiences and how they are treated by those older than them. The novel The Autobiography of my Mother by Jamaica Kincaid reveal some complications that usually affect children when growing up. Parents play a key role in shaping the lives of their children and the absence of an emotional attachment between them usually leads to psychological problems later in life.
While the theoretical reasoning that supports the idea that child abuse often leads to crime gives a basis for the concept, much of the evidence that links the two lies in the concrete details. The visible effects of child abuse and neglect that assist with the basis that has been given by the psychological theories lies in observable behavioral and emotional effects of those who are known to have been subject to maltreatment as children. Some children who have a history with abuse do not experience any repercussions while others experience extreme consequences; this is largely because of the certain child’s ability to handle and grow from negative experiences (Child Welfare Information Gateway 3). Children who experience consequences
Hooks (2000) discusses a college experience where she notices a difference in the way males and females conduct each other in her classes. She observed that women did not talk as much as the men nor were they called upon as often as men were (especially in mixed gender classes). This negatively influenced Hooks (2000) because her prior expectations expected that in schools, males and females were treated equally. This experience weakened the confidence she had in her academic capabilities but eventually she was able to accept and cope with the customs of her new school. Comparably, in my narrative I discuss the false expectations that I had towards parenting and the difficulty I experienced accepting the customs of my friend’s parents. For example, in Sarah’s cultural background, the parents decide their children’s academic careers. Like Hooks (2000), I felt very saddened because my expectations about parenting
Child abuse and neglect are considered a social phenomenon that plays a crucial role in American society as well as in the American criminal justice system. All types of ages, genders, ethnicities at some point or another are represented as victims or perpetrators of child abuse or neglect. Child abuse includes physical, psychological and sometimes sexual abuse to a person who is below the age of 18. Child abuse or neglect victims tend to grow up with long terms consequences such as low self-esteem, depression, and other major consequences such as engaging in criminal behavior as adults, teen pregnancy and not to mention the severity of physical child abuse consequences can end up in a death of an innocent victim.
