The aspects of society and what it considers as accepted behavior tends to have a significant role and impact in a person’s life. People get greatly influenced and often do what is believed to be right, compromising with their choices and what they want. An example of this is shown in the short story “The Bats” by Chitra Divakaruni. The mother and the daughter are shown to be caught up in a conflict. Being troubled by an abusive husband and father, the mother and her daughter are forced to leave for the grandfather’s house at night without informing anyone. They stayed there for quite a while and the mother and the girl had grown accustomed to living there. After some time, the mother had received a letter from the abusive father asking them to return and that’s when we find out that the mother had written to him and how she was being troubled by the stares and whispers of the women in the marketplace for not being with her husband. She and her daughter eventually return, but after a while, everything goes back to like it was before. The mother’s decision to return to her abusive husband, the stares and whispers of the women, and her daughter’s demand to stay with her grandfather show how the mother was being affected sociologically and psychologically. A person often reflects about what society will think about his or her actions, but it can lead to problems if the person gets too caught up in these thoughts. People will always say things, but it is our
The author used women’s oppression to write stories like, “The Moths.” The narrator learns that a person can follow the rules and still not be smothered by traditions and rules. Her Abuelita was an example to her. Through symbolism and setting, the author was able to depict women’s oppression by their societal
The girl has no authority figure, a careless mother, no father, and no other adult to rescue her. A third social force would be Theory of Self, formation of self through interactions with significant others. Through the lack of recourses, having to hide her abuse and the neglect of her mother, she’s forced to put on a strong front, keep her home life a secret, and pretend everything is okay although it’s not; “through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above.” Her home life and lack of relationships with others really takes a toll on her happiness and sometimes she wishes she was never born. A fourth social force would be related to the child abuse and neglect, there’s actually two sociological phenomenon and norm breaking. It’s considered a sociological phenomenon because it is not an innate behavioral pattern for human beings to follow. Abusing and your child, is not only a norm breaking but also breaking the law. Norms today when it comes to a child is expected of the parent to love, take care, and provide for them, not to beat them. This was not the case at all in Concrete Angel, for her mother constantly beat her, never showed any love towards her or took care of her. Another norm violated would be with the teacher and neighbors; they heard or saw signs of abuse but never stepped up to save the girl from the abuse. They hid behind fear and turned a blind
“What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” is American philosopher, Thomas Nagel’s, opinion on the widely debated mind-body problem. Nagel introduces the paper by explaining what it means for something to be conscious. He defines consciousness as an organism’s ability for there to be something it is like to be that organism. Using his definition of consciousness Nagel suggests that physicalism cannot be successfully defended using the popular reductionism theory. This is because in order to be defended a physical account must be given to phenomenological features themselves. This leads Nagel to his argument, “Every subjective phenomenon is essentially connected with a single point of view, and it seems inevitable that an objective, physical theory will
The author’s purpose is to show how easily people are influenced by society and those around them.
What pressures an individual to conform? Two short stories by Romesh Gunesekera and Amy Tan inform the readers of the effects that society and culture has on an individual. They introduce two characters whom are affected: Amy Tan, a teenage Chinese girl living in the United States, and a young Sri Lankan woman whose name is unidentified. Ultimately, society and culture affect an individual by pressuring them to conform as seen throughout “Carapace” and “Fish Cheeks” with the use of vivid language and profound narration.
This analysis have shown me how important is to be faithful to your own principles, even when the world takes you to unknown. The knowledge of the society in which each one has to life is what shows that opposed positions that seem irreconcilable are part of a whole and as Collin’s suggests, each individual has to decide what is right or what is wrong in the society and then take a position and try to change what is wrong. (Hentrhone,
To be a slave to others ideologies, is to give up your own sense of freedom and lie to your own self. When our own self interest is put behind others, it makes us feel lost and uncertain in our own life. We are not sure what to do with our lives. In life we are faced with many hard circumstances that are not easy to overcome, but if we can reach back to our old roots we can free ourselves from our patternistic lifestyles and pursue what we want to do. In the short story “Behind the Headlines” by Vidyut Aklujkar, we see life through the main character Lakshmi’s eyes. Her life has been taken over by her husband’s life and she is trapped living the same way for 12 years. Lakshmi’s life can be a parallel to a news story itself. When we first hear about breaking news, we don’t know much about the story since new information is coming out- In this short story, when we first start reading we aren’t given too much information. As the news keeps covering the story, we are given more background on the event and all the circumstances that led up to the event, and as the news reporters get to the end of the story, we are finally given a conclusion that either makes us happy or sad. In this short story case, you are left feeling happy that Lakshmi found her way out. When we are stuck in a rut and not able to take control of our own life, we become lost. We when can overcome our circumstances and get away from our daily conventions, we are able to find ourselves and become who we really
According to the speaker, how is a society judged? A society is judged on the people who are in it.
Our opinions are influenced by the way our society thinks. This can have a little effect such as what trends we follow, or as large of an effect as how we're supposed to act. This can be a terrible system. In the text The Chrysalids by John Wyndham by the reader should learn that society has a huge influence on individuals by controlling influential figures to tell us certain things, using other actions, and using other cultures.
Influence is powerful in determining one’s future. Actions behaviors and opinions are all connected to impact of others and the way they shape our views on the world as well as ourselves. Self-Image is dependent on the acceptance of others, thus always changing since one’s morals and ethics do not stay the same as time goes on. Influence of others play a role on how one tends to view themselves and people around them, by either being forced to conform to a country’s lifestyle, completing constant tasks to keep up with society’s demands, or being able to be content with oneself rather than being blinded of the onslaught of constant expectations.
Family is one of the most important institutions in society. Family influences different aspects of a person’s life, such as their religion, values, morals and behavior. Unfortunately, problems may arise when an individual’s belief system or behavior does not coincide with that of family standards. Consequently, individuals may be forced to repress their emotions or avoid acting in ways that that are not acceptable to the family. In the novel The Rain God, written by Arturo Islas, we are presented with a story about a matriarchal family that deals with various conflicts. One major internal conflict is repression. Throughout the novel the characters act in strange ways and many of the family members have internal “monsters” that represent
As conformity becomes ever more common within a society, individuals isolate themselves, but only because the conformists have lost their ability to reflect on their decisions. Similarly, while Bernard and Lenina watch the sea in peace, he makes comments about individuality and its benefits, which startles Lenina, who exclaims, “And how can you talk like that about not wanting to be a part of the social body? After all, every one works for everyone else” (Huxley 91). Here, Lenina is absolutely shocked that Bernard would not want to be with everyone else. However, the sole reason why people only want to conform is that they cannot begin to express their own thoughts and feelings. A person’s individuality is what sets them apart from the rest of society, and when taken away, they become generic. Even though conforming can cause a lot of problems in a person, they are able to agree with a group of people and are able to convey ideas clearly as well as not feel left out. Furthermore, in the story The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin, there are many examples of conformity when it comes to witnessing the child that is responsible for the “happiness” in
A person’s reasoning, judgment and life reflect their thought process. For example, Oprah Winfrey is a successful African American icon, Book Club owner, TV show host, and former anchor women. She comes from the back side of America and she grew up in a broken home. If Oprah Winfrey had let negative thoughts about her childhood’s circumstance gain authority over her life, then she would not be the successful billionaire that she is today. Instead she thought
Children advance through a series of life changing events while growing up. Plenty of them are cheerful milestones that are celebrated for instance a birthday or an accomplishment, and then there are those children who are neglected and abused by another family member. When a child is abused or neglected, it not only affects them when they are children, but also affects them when they become functioning adults in society. A sociological social psychology perspective that can be applied to explain why child abuse happens which is the social structure and personality perspective. This perspective can also find a way to solve child abuse in the home. Child abuse is a social problem that has been happening for plenty of decades in our society and with the social structure and personality perspective, one is able to help explain why it happens and how the problem can be solved.
Throughout the short stories, characters endure circumstances that allow them to realize the unfairness of the world, ultimately causing a change in attitude. In “Souvenir,” the protagonist finds herself in a shop purchasing a pack of condoms for her mentally ill boyfriend while being followed by an old man. With the belief that sacrificing something precious of herself such as her virginity, the teenager initially felt that her love could save him from his mental illness. Those in the store around her, however, forced humiliation upon her, especially the elderly man. Finally becoming aware to those around her, she has an epiphany of those surrounding her in addition to the society she lives in. Witnessing the differences in people’s behaviors and attitudes, she grasps the understanding that people are influenced by others
