Supernatural is the longest running sci-fi television show in America. It has a very big cult fandom following and has been on the air for 12 seasons. It follows the life of Sam and Dean Winchester. The reason this show has been so popular is because of the many references to religion or religious aspects to characters in the show. The show mainly references Christian and Judeo mythology. It stays on the line of Catholic theology. However, it does dive into Hinduism, voodoo, and Islam in a few episodes. There is no one religion that the show focuses on. It’s more that they take one aspect of a religion as use that as the “Monster of the Week”. But to really understand all of this, we must go into the show and what it is about.
Supernatural follows the life of Sam and Dean Winchester who are hunters of supernatural beings. When the brothers were very young, their mother, Mary Winchester, died in a house fire, so their father took over to raise them. Their father, John Winchester taught them about the hunter lifestyle and drove them around the country their whole lives, hunting things, saving lives, the family business. Sam and Dean do spend most of their time hunting demons, ghosts, monsters and things of that sort. However, as the series has continued, they have delved into deeper and bigger beings. In season 4, Dean is pulled out of hell because he sold his soul to bring his brother back from the dead. Dean finds out that he was pulled out of hell by an angel named

Their mother dies when a sudden air current sucks her body up to the ceiling of the families house, leaving nothing but a diminished corpse. Later on we see this same exact thing happen to Sam’s girlfriend. Being taken up with hunting after his wife’s death the family patriarch was also later killed off. It because apparent that something big was heading their way, an apocalypse.
Martin uses a functionalistic approach to understand the role religion plays in society, exploring each object with hermeneutical suspicion, believing, for the sake of this study, that any supernatural claims are false. By exploring such concepts as classification, structured society, and habitus, Martin explains how “we, as humans, are a product of society”. He focuses on answering questions such as “what’s going on” and “whose interests are served” by skeptically looking at the way in which people use legitimation, authority, and authenticity to push their own agendas.
When we learn this we discover that Dean feels that he could possibly turn into his father if he shows too much anger or gets close to people. As he goes through these trials and tribulations from his father we see that Michael, Lia and Cassie run off to do work on a current case to get intel when they have no approval to do so. They do this to protect dean and help him. Even Michael who you would think hated Dean. Cassie helps Dean get through these hard times and helps bring out some of his emotions. Cassie reflects on the hard times that all the naturals have had in their past and Cassie says "If we had good childhoods we wouldn't be naturals."[236]. She reflects on that if they weren't all a little bit broken that they wouldn't be helping and saving lives. This shows the theme of being Broken isn't always a bad
Religion manifests itself everywhere around the world. Although all beings are different we come together as one transcendence being the host. Sacred rituals are performed, honoring beliefs in accordance to ones religion. Rituals are performed for a wide array of reasons, some being a sort of rite of passage, healing the sick and even birth or death rituals. Judaism, Santeria, and Christianity all have ceremonies and rituals, some carried out as different as night and day, and some for the same purposes. These religions in depth have more in common than the eye can see, devotion, transcendence and worship to a higher absolute power. All participating in Sacred Ritual.
There are many religious beliefs that have confused people throughout the years. For example, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christians are the most commonly religions that confuse people. A religious belief is basically a belief in God or gods. Hinduism is a religion where people do witch craft in what they believe that will help and protect them.
Religion is characterized as an organized system of beliefs, values, standards, and traditions that are passed through generations from a specific group of individuals. Religion can be portrayed as a faith concerning one or more deities and encompassing various rituals, ethical principles, and ceremonies. Prior to European invasion, Native Americans thrived in hundreds of tribes and possessed different cultures, languages, clothing, and customs. Due to forced European conversion, Native Americans struggled to preserve their cultural background and were required to assimilate into modern American life. The repercussions of this massive destruction of Native American religion and culture is still prevalent in modern societies across the world.
Last week I predicted that Dean would struggle with the return of Mary. I think he is having an identity crisis which is leading him to act very ‘un’ Dean like. At the start of the episode, he even tried to talk to Cas about the situation. Since Dean was four years old he has been brother, mother, and even father to Sam. With the return of Mary, Dean’s place in the family has shifted. The scenes at the end of the episode where Dean was emotional eating

Religion and faith play numerous roles in people’s lives. From being a unifying factor to alienating people, and from comforting people to terrifying others, the roles of religion is vast and boundless. Sam and Dean are very similar to each other.
