Symbolism and Metaphor in Poetry The meaning of a poem can be expressed through literary devices such as a metaphor or symbolism. When looking at the poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, there is symbolism and there are also metaphors being shown. A metaphor is comparing two unlike things without using like or as and symbolism is to reinforce, add, and carry more meaning. In “My Papa’s Waltz”, there are numerous times that symbolism is enforced. For example, the lines: The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death;
Such waltzing was not easy.

We romped until the pans
Slid from the kitchen shelf;

My mother’s countenance
Could not unfrown itself. (1-8) suggest that the child was living with an abusive, drunk father and a mother who could not stand up for herself or her child. Some symbols in the poem are waltzing and whiskey. Waltzing symbolizes the abuse the father did and whiskey symbolizes the drinking the father did. Those two things symbolize the meaning of the poem.The meaning of this poem suggests that alcoholics are mean and aggressive towards others. They are also hard to cooperate with, which might infer why the mother could not help her son during the traumatic beatings. Metaphors are also visible in the poem as well and are shown in the lines
You beat time on my head
With a palm caked hard by dirt,
Then waltzed me off to bed
