Take On Christopher Columbus - Social 10 - Cassiopeia In my opinion, we should not celebrate Christopher Columbus Day. This is because Columbus has committed many harsh and cruel crimes against the aboriginal peoples of North America, he didn't actually prove the earth was round, and he wasn't even really the first (white) person to discover it. Firstly, Columbus was in fact a murdered who enslaved other human beings for the purpose of obtaining gold. He mistreated these people horribly often cutting their hands off if they didn't supply him with the gold he desired. He permitted the rape and murder of first nations women and they were often killed as sport. This is absolutely horrible and no man should be celebrated when he has committed
We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
Throughout many recent years, there has been a great deal of speculation about whether we should celebrate Columbus Day; whether Christopher Columbus, the man with a holiday named after him, the man who “discovered” America, was really hero. There are people who claim that Columbus was, in fact, someone to be celebrated. This is false. Christopher Columbus was, most blatantly put, a villain. He deserves this status because he did not discover the land now known as America, he forced his beliefs onto others, and he utterly destroyed the lives of unknowing, innocent people.
When you were a kid, you were taught that Christopher Columbus was this great explorer and person. That’s why we celebrate Columbus Day, but little did you know that he was a really twisted and corrupted person. Columbus should be remembered in a bad way because he led to the enslavement of the Native American people, slaughtered them, but a cultural exchange with the “New World” and the Europeans was started because of him.
I don’t think that the United States should recognize Colombus Day as Indigenous Day because of the conteversy that Columbus caused to the Native americans . Christopher Colombus was getting create for something that he didn’t discover. The native americans got little to no credit for being there first. We don’t get to learn about how Colombus treated the Native Americans as well. The only thing that America praises him for is the discovery of new land.
Despite Christopher Columbus being celebrated as a hero for centuries, some of his actions would not be celebrated by many. For years Columbus has been considered the first to discover America, but research concludes that a Viking had discovered America long before he did. With more and more information about him popping up, should we really celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus has been given credit for discovering an already discovered country, enslaved the natives of America, and almost completely wiped out the Taino people.
This could cause death to some families and make families slaves and because Columbus captured more Indian slaves than he could transport to Spain in his small ship he brought. He made them work in mines and plantations were created all over the Caribbean. His followers hunted Indians for sport and profit. They would beat, rape, torture, kill, and then use the Indian bodies as food for their hunting dogs. Within four years of Columbus' arrival on Hispaniola, his men had killed or exported one-third of the original Indian population of 300,000. Thats a huge number! Now i don't believe we should celebrate a holiday if it is about killing people and the mass persecution of Native people. Living in the U.S i know that when i see Columbus day on the schedule and it comes on a school day i smile because i get to miss school. Kids only care about the holiday so they can miss school and they do zero research on it. The United States
My honest opinion is that children of today’s generation should NOT be taught to celebrate a day for an evil man like Christopher Columbus. His entire voyage was a lie. He was searching for China but found the New World. When he arrived, he met dark skinned beings. He gave them the name Indians. These Indians helped Columbus and his crew survive and find gold on their lands. Then Columbus decided to try and enslave these Indians so his crew wouldn’t have to work. Columbus Day should not be celebrated in an evil man’s memory.
In my opinion, however, I feel that Columbus Day Day should be reconsidered as a holiday. You state that an Italian arrived and discovered the United States. If that were true the land wouldn't already have been populated. The Native Americans were on American soil far before any Italians or Pilgrims came along. To have discovered America, it would have been uninhabited
Christopher Columbus was(and still is) celebrated. But more and more people are starting to question his voyage. The order sons of Italy wrote in “ why we should celebrate Columbus day” that Columbus is a positive figure and that his expeditions had many positive consequences. But Howard Zinn writes in “ Columbus and the Indians that he was an enslaver who killed many people. Another point of view is Mary Ann Castronovo’s, she writes in “ in person; in defense of Columbus” that Columbus should be remembered but not celebrated. This shows that Columbus is a debated and challenged character in our past.
The United States only honors two men with federal holidays bearing their names, Martin Luther King Jr., and Christopher Columbus. When we celebrate Columbus Day, we are honoring a man who helped spark a holocaust situation of the people of America and the Atlantic slave trade. Furthermore, Columbus never set foot on the land we call the United States, nor was the first explorer to reach the "new world". Columbus's arrival in the new world was proceeded by the explorer Leif Ericson and others. The true discoverers of the land Columbus encountered are the ancestors of the native people who were living there when he arrived. Unfortunately, the public education system of the United States has failed to teach the entire truth about Christopher
I don't think that we should celebrate Columbus Day. We have been taught since we were young that he is a hero and had done many great things. He is not what he is made out to be.
We talk about him in school, it's taught that he's a great explorer who found our great nation. What they don't teach us is that he is a murderer. He murdered thousands of natives from the islands he first sailed to. Many wouldn't be able to guess the name of this explorer by the description, but in fact, his name is Christopher Columbus. Columbus didn't care about the lives of the indigenous people on many of the islands, he only cared about having control of the land. When we celebrate Columbus day in school and as a country we are honoring a man who did nothing good for the country but actually discouraged diversity and someone who resorted to violence rather than possible treaties or alliances. We need to discourage Columbus day, and rather,
"Should the United States celebrate Columbus Day?" In my opinion, the United States should celebrate Columbus Day because it is celebrated as a day when America was discovered. It is a part of history that we can not ignore. While I realize that we should not celebrate a day that marked the start of a massacre and bloodshed for decades to come, I cannot help but think that behind most revolutions and wars in history, blood has been shed. In addition, I feel that we do not celebrate Columbus Day to mock anyone or to accept the crimes of Christopher Columbus, but rather we celebrate it as a day our roots in America began. In addition, our morals are different than what people thought of as acceptable back then. Who are we to judge the actions done by someone else? We have neither lived in that time period nor were we raised the way they were. We were taught what they were taught. It is undeniable that without Columbus, much of what we have today may have not existed. Of course, this by no means show that I encouraging the way he treated the Natives, but rather stating that this is a indubitable part of our history that we should not be so ashamed of
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a holiday because he was very cruel to the Native Americans. In truth it’s very sad what he did. What Columbus did was what some call the American Holocaust. He forced the native peoples to be Christian, murdering and torturing them is they didn’t convert. Columbus pillaged and robbed- eating the food the natives worked hard to get. He forced them to mine, harvest, grow, and plant all of the food and gold. The diseases that were brought killed thousands, wiping out entire groups in a few months. The killing and torture made the relationship between natives and Englishmen worse. Clearly, Christopher Columbus isn’t worthy of a holiday.
I think that Columbus should be celebrated or at least recognized. While Columbus did do some terrible things like supporting slave trade and destroying the indigenous people. He also started the beginning of the Age of Exploration which played a huge role in shaping history. His efforts really bridged the gap between the New World and the Old World. This resulted in a vast expansion of goods, technology, and culture between them. Though he wasn’t the first to discover America, he started an incredible expedition that has had serious effects on the advancements in today’s society. Though what he did was horrible, conquests and slavery were not only common practices of the time but important parts of the development of civilization. Colonization
