Hawk-Eye is a complex computer system that is used officially in various sports such as cricket, tennis, and soccer, to visually track the trajectory of the ball and display a record of its statistically most likely path as a moving image.
Hawk-Eye was developed Dr Paul Hawkins in the United Kingdom. The system was originally implemented in 2001 for television purposes in cricket. The system works via six or sometimes seven high-performance cameras, usually positioned on the underside of the stadium roof, which will track the ball from different angles. Videos from the six cameras is then triangulated and combined to create a 3D representation of the trajectory of the ball. Hawk-Eye is accurate to within 5 millimetres but is generally trusted as an impartial second opinion in sports.
Hawk-Eye is one of the leading vision processing companies in sports. It is first used as a broadcast tool to analyse decisions in cricket. Hawk-Eye has since revolutionised sports broadcasting, officiating and coaching across various sports. Hawk-Eye has been installed in more than 230 soccer stadiums worldwide over a period of 12 years. Hawk-Eye’s success has been recognised through several honours including two British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), one Emmy, one Logie, three Royal Television Society Awards and recognition as Best Technology by the British Computer Society.
