Summary This week I went out on a case for Tashara Handcock a casework in my unit. Ms. Handcock relies on me with going out on cases for her. I am always glad to lighten her load, and gain experience while out on the field. Ms. Handcock is not the only one who trust me with her caseload. Monica McDonald ask me to see some of her clients as well. I went out on cases with her, and typed up case notes explaining our visits with the client. Monday was a slow day at the office, and I was not given a task by my supervisor to complete. I took the initiative to email everyone in my intake department. My email asked if anyone needed assistance with their cases to contact me. An intake case worker saw my email and told an ongoing caseworker who need assistance. The ongoing caseworker asked if I could assist her with transporting a child from the Perseus shelter to the McKean County Court House. The ongoing caseworker said she did not feel comfortable with transporting her teenage girl client in her car alone. The ongoing caseworker wanted another caseworker to monitor the girl’s behavior. I accompanied the ongoing casework with transporting the youth to court. The …show more content…
A caseworker’s main job is to advocate for our client population which is children and youth. OCY workers go into the home and investigate to see the extent of the maltreatment. We are to protect children and youth from abuse in all forms. Social Justice is used when parents are being neglectful, and not meeting the basic needs for their child. Caseworkers complete home assessments, and advocate for the child’s needs so the child can thrive. Children and youth are either too young, or afraid to speak up against the maltreatment inflicted upon them. OCY steps in and speaks up for the children and youth. Caseworkers make safety and risk assessments to determine if the child could be maltreated and advocates for change on the youth’s
Child welfare systems are constructed to support families and most importantly to protect children from harm using prevention and intervention services. Child welfare is a great example to demonstrate how the NASW’s ethical principles are put into effect. They are based on values of service by helping the children in need and addressing the social problems they are faced with. Another value that could be used is social justice especially in cases that involve children because the whole objective of child welfare systems is to ensure the well-being of a child. The services are meant to support children who have been or are at risk of abuse or neglect.
Before going into further details, I first asked Ms. Katie to tell me about herself. She started sharing her experience with working in the child welfare for almost 16 years and how she she has enjoyed the experience. The field helped her gain more knowledge than what she had expected. In the past, she has done a little bit of In-home and foster care, which were not her preferences, but benefited her gain experiences. Ms. Katie’s job interest is working with high conflict cases, such as substance abuse, neglect, and child fatality, which she is currently doing at her job. What she does is when all cases, such as abuse, of children under the age of 18 are reported to her unit, she treats them as a 24 hour or immediately case, where the next step is to meet or be in contact with the families and different people for data collection. After this stage, she closes the case or send them to the in-home unit, which addresses any concern that the families may have as well as help them with available resources. Ms. Katie has had a positive
Roles and responsibilities of the different organisations that may be involved when a child or young person has been abused or harmed: Children’s Social Care (act when concerns raised about a child, carry out assessment of child’s needs, interview child or young person and family, gather information from other agencies, lead Child Protection Conference, take action if child or young person in immediate danger);police (make decision about whether crime has been committed, take emergency action if child or young person is in immediate danger);health professionals, general practitioners, doctors in emergency departments (examine/observe a child or young person thought to be at risk of abuse or who has suffered abuse); health visitors; The
Child Protective Services (CPS) is a complex system of assessments, investigations, and conclusions. CPS is the central agency in each communities child abuse and neglect service system. It is responsible for ensuring that preventative, investigative, and treatment services are available to children and families endangered by child abuse and neglect. As a result, CPS workers must perform a variety of functions when responding to situations of child maltreatment and play a variety of roles throughout their involvement with child protective clients. Reporting a suspective case of child maltreatment to the local CPS agency (or a family member’s own request for help with the problem) initiates
I hope to use my law degree to change the lives of mistreated children from all over the world. As a victim of child abuse, serving this community has become a part of my identity. My aspiration to represent mistreated children, albeit vitalized by personal turmoil, has been intensified through professional experience. Through my work with Child Protective Services (CPS), during an internship with a family law attorney, I developed my passion for advocating on behalf of children. While working on CPS cases, I have seen how the lives of children can improve through diligent efforts by authority figures. However, I have also witnessed the shortcoming of the system as well where there is room for improvement. These vulnerable children deserve
Accounts of neighbors, bystanders or the child themselves need to be considered, and in some cases, more heavily than a visit by the caseworker. Emotions can be staged, it’s easy to lie, and a bystander could a valuable witness- they offer an objective evaluation- clearly impossible while following the family preservation model, and a family member may see the family more often than the caseworker, and therefore have a better evaluation of the situation. An important aspect is objectivity. Yes, the caseworker is going to become attached, but the main operation is to understand the situation, establish if abuse or neglect is occurring and find the best solution for the child. The family preservation model is not ineffective, but it produces an obligation for caseworkers to operate in the interest of the whole family, which can overlook certain problems for the betterment of the whole. As much as the model needs clear and precise guidelines and procedures, it restricts the ability to operate in a variety of situations. For me the problem resides in the contradictory job of being a mediator and enforcer. One would think that being a mediator helps to understanding how to effectively enforce, but the overlap produces inconsistencies, as you can never equally fulfill both roles. The caseworker is asked to too much at once, abuse is abstractly developed and enforced and sometimes rooted in more than
social workers are the middle [wo]men between families, social service agencies and schools; working to reunify kids with their families or working to keep kids with their families. By providing advocacy to biological families and foster families, social workers exercise their power of judgement in deciding if the home is a good placement for said child. In a video uploaded by Public Children Service Association of Ohio (PCSAO), the lives of 3 social workers from Ohio and their work experience are documented. Karla Lindsey describes her typical day as “chaotic, and unpredictable” dealing with daily new reports of abuse and neglect (PCSAO).

Lamyia was very stressed out about everything. 11:38am this worker messed Lamyia and told her that is why she needed to call this worker so we could talk and get things stared and going for Lamyia. This worker also wanted to speak with her about Christmas gifts going to the children in the foster home not to her because they are for the children while they are in care. 11:45AM This worker spoke with Lamyia on the phone. Lamyia told this worker that Mike O'Neil was going to get involved in her case and she may be charged criminally for the child abuse. Lamyia was worried about being arrested and sitting in jail rather than working on her services. Lamyia told
Their occupation is based upon advocacy and social justice. In addition to this, it is crucial for the social worker to know everything about child abuse. This ranges from the signs and symptoms of it, to knowing how to react to these situations based on medical and psychological impact. The social workers at Wynona’s House must be resilient and patient. Having these qualities makes room for effective procedures because the psychosocial examinations usually last up to 2 and a half hours. More than one examination occurs each day. Lastly, social workers here must be committed to their work to fully lend a helping
Each year, the Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates (Henrico CASA) program harnesses the power of over 100 volunteers, supervised by three staff members, to provide a complete investigation and reports to the Court during up to 400 cases with allegations of abuse and neglect of a child. Our program’s focused and intense training program empowers these everyday citizens to play a powerful role in these abused and neglected children’s lives. Our volunteer advocates investigate the children’s situations and make recommendations for ameliorating services and appropriate permanent homes. The program’s lean and efficient staff provides consistent support and continuing education to help ensure the best outcomes for each child at the minimal
Child welfare is one of the most important sociological topics today. It is a concept that is used to describe the combination of efforts and services that are designed with the primary objective of maintaining and promoting the safety as well as the wellbeing of children and ensuring that families have the necessary support they need to ensure that their children have been successfully cared for. In essence, child welfare is social work that is focused on the welfare of children (Keddell, 2014). Child welfare is a broad topic that involves, among others, child protection from abuse, support for families to effectively care for their children, investigation of child maltreatments and neglect, and support for children in
This week through my employment, I had to seek out emergency respite options for an individual receiving services through the County Board. I realize that my employment is not related to my field placement, however the tasks I was engaged in this week at work others may be experiencing similar situations through field placement. Plus it has been awhile since I have been involved in a situation where emergency housing or respite was needed, so this experience was a break from my routine. The individual, KB, is a 20 year old female currently residing with her parents. KB’s diagnoses includes: schizophrenia, mild intellectual disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. Due to episodes of both verbal and physical aggression, amongst all family members, I was charged with seeking respite services with the likelihood of long term residential services if respite is successful.
Social workers are tasked with ongoing monitoring and adapting of case plans, visitation plans, and placement needs to ensure safety, permanency, and well-being for children in out-of-home placements. Social workers should be aware of research-based risk factors associated with placement disruption and increased risk of maltreatment in out-of-home placements. This awareness should help mitigate these risks by noting warning signs early through collaboration with caregivers, parents, and service providers.
Social workers are the critical bridge between families and the resources that they need. The job of those specializing in child and family services may include protecting children and families from domestic abuse, discrimination, and illness. They also help with connecting families with resources like food stamps, homes, and psychological treatments.
Child abuse is horrible and it affects everyone in one way or another. Before 1963, there were no laws to protect the kids from abuse but thanks to social workers and other judicial people, there were laws passed (Pfohl). This paper is going to explain why it is so important for social workers to protect kids by talking about this history of abuse and why social workers need to be around. It will also discuss what social workers do today to prevent kids from being hurt. Social workers are useful in just about every aspect of life but in my opinion this is one of the more important jobs of a social worker because your protecting those of the future. Abuse isn’t just
