In the United States, the topic of education is widely debated and discussed. However little is talked about other than how teachers are paid very little and the amount of students per teacher is on the rise. Despite what some think, teaching is one of the most crucial professions in our society. In order to fix the problems of tomorrow we must educate today. Matt Alexander said that in his eight years of teaching he has found that, “Teacher not only teach the subjects they teach things that sometimes are lacking at home, such as character, work ethic, and responsibility.”(Personal communication, May 11, 2017). So what is it like to really be a teacher, and why and how do these heroes enter this field? This paper is going to talk about why …show more content…
For a high school teacher all that is required is a bachelor degree, and an endorsement for each subject. These endorsements are achieved by taking certain college courses and then applying for the endorsement from the State Department of Education (2017). In order to receive initial certification, a college transcript, Praxis II test scores, Completed Institutional Recommendation by the college of education. A Seventy-five dollar application fee, as well as a fingerprint card that is used for the background check. If the Department accepts the application, the certification last for 5 years. In order to recertify, an application, that includes a Seventy-five dollar fee, and proof of 6 professional development credits. These professional development credits can be achieved a number of ways through trainings, online courses, and clinics (Department Of Education, 2017). One of the positives for me wanting to be a coach as well as teacher, is that any sports/ coaching clinic that I attend can count as a credit. These are more enjoyable to attend than the normal conferences having been to a few of both.
Once I receive my degree and certification, I need to find a job. One positive aspect of entering the education field is that there is always a need for teachers. According to Alexander, Idaho actually has a debt forgiveness program in place for Idaho graduates that stay in Idaho to teach math, science
His book ‘What Teachers Make: In Praise of the Greatest Job in the World’, is a phenomenal and a thrilling world which highlights the teacher-student relationship.
Back in the 1950s, teaching was considered a noble profession. The men and women that chose the field of education as a career were well respected by parents, students, and the community as a whole. I sat down with a retired teacher, a current teacher and a student working on their education degree, all three from the same family. Mr. Charles Faren is a retired high school teacher, head football coach and assistant principal, Ms. Cheryl Faren is currently a middle school reading teacher for the Clark County School District, and Mr. Matthew Barth is a student at College of Southern Nevada working on his degree in secondary education who is currently working as a gear up tutor at one of the county’s middle schools. The role of a teacher hasn’t necessarily changed over the years, the requirements and expectations have however. Today the educators of America are required to teach what is called common core, they have to prepare students to take standardize exams, with the technology of the internet and social media comes new forms of bullying and harassment that shows up in schools, low wages and now a lack of support and respect that today’s teachers now have to work through.
Teaching is not a lowly job as most people think. Teaching is a profession that is highly, commendable just like banking, nursing and other professions. However, some people often ridicule the teaching profession merely because of its poor pay, poor career prospects, not to mention the perceived monotony of the daily routine writing lesson plans and preparing lecture materials. Despite all these criticisms, not many teachers have defended themselves. However, in the article “I am not a babysitter,” Heather Robinson takes a stand to defend the teaching profession effectively by appealing to ethos, pathos and logos. This
Being a teacher is one of the most difficult professions in the world. We are responsible for the education of all the future citizens. As teachers, content will always be a major component of what we do but it should not be what drives us. Kottler, Zehm, and Kottler (2005), authors of “On Being a Teacher: The Human Dimension”, believe that the “goal of education is not to teach subject matter but to promote the development of productive and positive human beings.” In order to accomplish that,
Did you know that becoming a teacher you have to go through fieldwork (bls.gov)? The fieldwork is when you come to a school for a certain amount of days and observe. Then as time goes by you get to teach the class yourself. After a month of teaching your professor comes and evaluates how you do for about 2 days a week. But while you’re there you work under an experience teacher for a semester it’s how you learn while teaching. While you’re teaching there’s still classes you have to take (teaching degree.org). The classes you can take are normally open to you in high school. Like a class that teaches you what you need to know to pursue your dream. You could also take sample courses. You need a bachelor’s degree (bls.gov). The degree has to be in a certain field. Like English, history, or sciences. Then you get to go to degree program where you can train and take classes to get your next degree. The classes would be a big help but that’s when the expenses come along.
The objective of this study is to discuss important complexities in teacher's work. According to Churchill, et al (2013) The commitment to teaching brought to the studies and careers of teachers confirms that today's teachers and teachers previously genuinely love to learn and have a great desire to teach. Churchill et al (2013) states that this "deep commitment to humanity and making a difference in the lives of the next generation are among the qualities of people drawn to a career in teaching." (p.4) Some students are able to recall the teacher that transformed their lives and as stated by an experienced teacher and teacher educator "Whatever the situation the influence teachers have on their students I long lasting and can be profound. Good teaching makes a difference in the lives of children and young people." (Pugach, 2009, p.1 in: Churchill, et al, 2013, p.4)
First, to become a certified teacher- I have been accepted into the Oklahoma Teachers Alternative School Program. The program is solely for individuals with Bachelors degree that were not in the education field of study.
Learning occurs when a newborn first opens its eyes and observe its surroundings, and like a sponge absorbs the new information. It is a process that takes place through observation, participation and comprehension. Becoming a teacher isn’t a career that I first envisioned for myself as I grew up and went through the stages of ‘identity’, however, it has become the only career I can now see myself as. We become teacher by learning from teachers and our teachers became teacher by learning from their teachers and so on. When thinking about the aspect of becoming part of that cycle, I can’t help and wonder what my future students will teacher to others as they grow up, be it as a teacher, a parent or an adult part of society. For me, becoming a teacher is a means to create possibilities and accept the status of a lifelong learner. A new door opens for children as they develop and obtain knowledge by overcoming obstacles, discovering and exploring their surroundings and pursuing their dreams as both a student and an individual.
The steps to take in becoming an educator will vary with the type of path option you choose. In traditional programs, you would return to college to either complete your degree with a teaching license or complete an education program after your four year baccalaureate is completed. Here, TTT can assist you by identifying the educational program and university that fits with your desired path to teaching. Alternative licensure paths allow you to become a full-time teacher first, based upon your existing bachelor's degree, while working towards full teacher certification within three years (lateral entry policy). TTT can guide you either to a specific university or one of the Regional Alternative Licensing Centers (RALC) in North Carolina to
“Teachers are people who could not get the careers they really wanted” a misconception some people have of the teaching profession. Most teachers are people who have chosen to fill the arduous, yet rewarding role of passing social norms and information on to others. Teachers do not always have a good reputation, they are misrepresented in media and by uninformed people. One way to combat such misconceptions is for teachers to continue advocating for the utmost highest educational standards. This semester, on my journey to become an educator, I encountered three major themes that have been a persistent in factor in my school observations, in selected novels, in lecture, and in the required text for this course. Those areas are how the
My personal path which has led me to becoming a certified teacher is anything but conventional. I have adorned numerous hats throughout my life. I have been a student; a business owner; a wife; a mother and most recently a substitute teacher. Throughout the various stages of my life thus far, one very prominent aspect has always been present. I have this overwhelming innate desire for learning and helping others. My educational path has been bombarded with numerous obstacles and road blocks over the past two decades. Through perseverance, and pure stubbornness, I completed my bachelor’s degree in December of 2014. It wasn’t in a specific specialty field of my dreams. In fact, it was a B.S. in General Studies. This degree allowed three minors of Business, Sociology and Family and Consumer Science. This degree, although labeled “General”, was anything but that. This accomplishment was spectacular, and above all, it was all mine. Soon after graduating, I quickly became overwhelmed with the repeated question of, “What are you going to do now?” “Hmm…let’s see. I don’t really know yet.” This would also be my repeated response.
When I think about teachers that I have had in the past, several different ones come to my mind. Each of these educators stands out in my mind for a variety of diverse reasons. Whether it is their sense of humor, their tactfulness, their love of the subject matter, their fanatical and sporadic behavior, or their yearning to be childish themselves, I can still remember at least one quality of every teacher I have ever encountered. Every one of these teachers conveyed subject material to their students just as they were educated and employed to do. However, I trust that every professional in the world has an abundance of opportunity for improvement; teachers could discover and improve themselves merely by having
In becoming a high school business teacher one must be aware of how to become such a teacher. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, traditionally, one goes through the four year college plan and receive their Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Every state requires teachers to
Teacher education is another factor in teacher attrition. Researchers report that the best and brightest among newcomers appear to be those most likely to leave due to the lack of support from institutions of higher learning (Curtis, 2012). By increasing the number of foundations courses may facilitate a smoother transition from college to the classroom (Schaefer, Long, & Clandinin, 2012).
Now that I have graduated high school and started college, I am getting more excited about earning my degree. It feels more real now that it did this time last year. In order for me to accomplish my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher, I must obtain a Bachelor’s degree in my field, Elementary Education. I will need to complete 32 semester hours of education related coursework. Also, I will have to complete a state-approved teacher preparation program. (“How to Become a Teacher in Alabama” np) This program will
