Ever since technology began so prominent in the modern world, can anyone remember going outside for more than 30 minutes and not see a cell phone or computer? Probably not, as these pieces of technology have become so ingrained in people’s lives, no one wants to leave their home without still being connected. And there is no reason to, as friends, family, and strangers share the same sentiments. Unplugging from technology is not only a decision people don’t make for personal reasons, it simply isn’t conducive to a productive life, as many people’s work and social lives wouldn’t be the same, if exist at all, without being connected to other people or the internet with just a single touch.

“Humanity acquiring all the right technology for all the wrong reasons” (R. Buckminster Fuller). Individuals use digital technology as a way to distract themselves from being in the real world. Researchers have found that digital technology such as phones, ipads, and computers is a constant interruption in daily lives. The digital technology prevents individuals from personal reflection, independence without technology, and face to face interactions.

Cell phones are affecting the lives of people in a negative way. People have begun to rely solely on the technology that has been created rather than picking up a book or finding answers the old-fashioned way. A major issue that has occurred because of cell phones is the lack of social skills in most nearly all individuals. Cell phones have greatly shaped society and destroyed face to face social skills. People pick up their phones and send a text rather than going to speak to a person. “According to an article in the Huffington Post, children do not know how to handle face-to-face conflict because so much of their interactions occur through some sort of technology…. Cell phones are now preventing these social skills from being taught because children are too caught up in technology than the real world.”(Hyman) When growing up, most children are taught how to make friends, but now children are growing up with the access to technology which has a great impact in shaping the social skills of children. “Young adults also use text messaging as their primary method of contacting friends – over 80 percent report texting as their preferred method.”(Voegeli). Young adults and even older adults have developed an addiction to their cell phone. Cell phones do make it easier to contact people, but they make social skills in individuals dissipate. People are attached to their phones like it is a part of their body. Technology like the cell phone has taken a toll on everyday life events. Not only teenagers and middle-aged adults, but even young children are addicted to staring down at a blue screen. How many times during the past year have you walked by a playground and heard the contagious laughter of young children playing? I bet that this number is very small. When I was nine years old, I remember what my favorite thing to do after school was. It was to play. Similar to every other child at the time, running around an open field or zipping down a slide was all I wanted. But today, the hushed silence I experience as I walk past the devoid park gives me chills as I watch the swings and slides wait to give joy to laughing children that used to frolic here everyday, but now remain quiet in their secluded houses. Not because it’s cold outside, but because nine-year-olds today are copying our technological obsession. Did you know that on average, children get their first cellphones at age eight? Our generation is becoming the most antisocial generation yet. Although many people disagree and believe that using technology, especially cell phones, make them more social, I don’t understand how sitting at home on a Friday night, texting or blogging, is more social than hanging out with your friends and enjoying the company of others. Technology is crucial with communication in different types of relationships. Communication is a key component in building a relationship, both in business and in a romantic relationship. As humans, it is natural that we communicate with one another. In the past, this had to be done through letters and postage companies, which would take awhile to deliver your message. In today's world, we humans use technology to communicate with our friends, business associates, consumers and loved ones. Communication has been aided by the invention of cellphones (mobile) and internet. These two inventions have changed the way we communicate, which is a good thing in today’s society. This generation heavily depends on technology to express their thoughts through text, email, and via phone call. This is because technology has made communication significantly faster than ever before.

Technology has conquered our world! Everywhere you look people are on their cell phones, iPad’s, laptops, or other peripheral device. It has gotten to the point to where people will line up for days in the cold, rain, or other various weather conditions, simply because they want to be the first ones to get the latest release of an iPhone, instead of spending time with friends and family. We live in a culture today that revolves around technology: where it is as simple to get a date for the night as swiping right or left, and your “friends” consist of people on your Facebook timeline that oftentimes you seldom know. The culture of today is almost solely technology-centric, in that if you don’t have the latest smart phone, or laptop, or “iDevice”, consequently you are somehow inferior to those who do.

Many individuals would argue that technology and modern conveniences make one’s life become simpler and more efficient. While technology may potentially have some benefits, technology does impact individuals on a social and a spiritual level. Technology shapes social structures, and social structures shape individuals, resulting in isolation and loneliness. Technology also impacts people on a spiritual level, causing people to develop an individualistic mindset. Therefore, modern life and conveniences actually hurt an individual’s well-being rather than restoring.

In today’s society we are overwhelmed with technology. Couple months ago, while I was walking on the street full of people some older woman did not feel good and she fell. Of all the people, who were on the street and passed by the lady looking in their phones, I was the only one who stopped and asked for help. That fact is at the same time terrifying and sad. Citizens do not interact with each others, they became immune to others pain, and do not feel each other. We can see that  more people act like robots, walk around with headphones in their ears and faces in phones, without any smile and one pleasant “good morning”, or “how are you”. Misusing of technology and its negative effect makes people to be someone who lose their feelings and connection with others, becoming desensitized to the suffering of their fellow man.

Sixty-eight percent of Americans own smartphones and forty-five percent have tablet computers. With the increasing accessibility of technology, more people are relying on it to accomplish everyday tasks. People have become so dependent on technology that they can not function or accomplish even the simplest of tasks without involving some sort of device. Not only are people becoming too reliant, but also addicted to a point in which they no longer feel a need to interact with others in real life. Daily, intellectuals are finding and creating new advancements in technology. Ignorant people may say that the advancements in technology are improving life, but the truth is that they are staging the world for disaster.

Obsessive use of technology socially isolates us and destroys our social skills. The first effect of excessive time with technology and media is social isolation. As published in the New York Times article “Antisocial Networking”, the Pew Research Center found that half of American teenagers — defined in the study as ages 12 through 17 — send 50 or more text messages a day and that one third send more than 100 a day. Two thirds of the texters surveyed by the center’s Internet and American Life Project said they were more likely to use their cell phones to text friends than to call them. Fifty-four percent said they text their friends once a day, but only 33 percent said they talk to their friends face-to-face on a daily basis. This research is proof that children are more willing to text their friends rather than to talk with them, therefore they are less likely to meet their friends in person as often as they text. Even though technology has linked people together by keeping people in touch with family, friends all the time through different sources, people pay more attention to their technological activities, lack valuable, real-life relationships with people around them, only associate with people who share the same interests, while they denigrate those who oppose their viewpoints and, lastly, people are losing communication skills because of it.

Many people and business owners worldwide had thought about this type of questions. Technology has been developing so fast that it became hard to follow up with it. It is possible to say that we live in a society that depends on information Technology. We must check up on our social media, communicate with friends or family and many other uses. Most of the technology users are youth and some from generation Millennials. Elder people use it but they prefer old type of communications and technology. Is it helpful? Many people have been wondering about this question. In my exploratory paper, I have found and included some of many sources that show you how technology could be helpful. Human ability to connect with distant parts of the world has increased by leaps and bounds. However, while technology does have its place in our world, in exchange for so much connectivity, there is a catch.
