Technology is involved in every aspect of our lives even if we don’t seem to realize it. Whether it inspires somebody to be a professional gamer or a computer hacker, it has changed the generation we live in today. In order to understand technology, a common definition is “the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society and the environment”(Dictionary). According to a CNN report, teenagers tend to spend about 9 hours a day on social media (Wallace, 2015) To put this statistic more in context, teens typically sleep 9 hours a night. This means teenagers are spending the same amount of time on technology than they are sleeping. James Steyer, a chief executive officer, highlights this issue and states, “It just shows you that these kids live in this 24/7 digital media technology world, and its shaping every aspect of their life. This is the dominant intermediary in their life”(Wallace, 2015). The social media platforms that teenagers seem to be browsing the most are Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Facebook is the most used social media site where 71% of all teens between the ages of 13 to 17 use, while 52% use Instagram and 41% use Snapchat (White, 2017, p.16). All these platforms are used for the enjoyment of teenagers and aren’t necessary in adding quality to their lives.
Teens use social media in many different forms. The first major form is relational interactions. Many teenagers only see their
The pressure and fear of what teenagers perceive to be the consequences of not staying connected only exacerbates their usage. On the average, teenagers send and receive up to 30 texts a day (Lenhart, 2015). The next age group, those between 19-26, who are balancing school with work have been shown to use the internet more frequently when compared to other age groups. Research shows, when comparing age groups from 16-74, that those between the ages of 19-25 were the most frequent users with over 90% saying they used, at a minimum, the internet on a daily basis (Thomée et al., 2012). Patterns have shown that those who use internet technology on a more frequent basis are more likely to use social media and texting applications at a high rate that is almost the equivalent of all day long (Thomée et al., 2012). Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat are social media applications that both adolescents and young adults use as a high frequency throughout the day. For young adults between the ages of 20-24, their increased usage of internet technology has often been purveyed through the necessity of communication. In some studies, it shows a majority of young adults believe they are expected to be reachable 24 hours a day; hence they never turn off their smartphones (Thomée et al., 2011).
With social media growing and growing into a mass of accounts and profiles and different groups of people and clubs and websites and other things, what adolescents do on social media is something that many parents worry about. Not every parent is at ease with the fact that their child/teenager is out in open water; one young human being surrounded by millions of other human beings who are younger, the same age, or older than them. The article “Teenage social media butterflies may not be such a bad idea” takes a look at teenagers ' use of social media. Social media is a very important tool, allowing people to connect or continue their relationships without
What does the future hold? The first word that penetrates my mind is technology. Throughout the past century technology has evolved in so many ways. It has made interacting more efficient, school effortless, and medicine much more sophisticated. Moreover, tech has had a colossal impact on our world now. Unfortunately, with all the opportunities this innovation has given us, comes the side effects. Nowadays teens are so invested in the new, anonymous online world, that kids have become increasingly isolated. Many kids are so focused on how many “likes”, “followers”, or “snaps” they have, that the rest of the world is totally disregarded. Even the voracious hunger for learning has been lost with the progress of technology. The question one
Everywhere you go teens seem to be glued to their phones, tablets, or computers. Technology is an addiction that does not seem to be going away any time soon. According to the Washington Post, teens can spend up to seven or more hours on their digital devices a day and the usage is still increasing. Not surprisingly enough, more than a third of all teenagers own a cellphone, ranging from a smart phone or just a plain old-school flip phone. But can spending all that time on their computers and smart devices be such a bad thing? Today’s easy access, always on world presents a wealth of opportunity for teens as students, but also challenges them to retain them essential humanity and unique personalities.
A random teenager said in an article that she receives about 900 texts a day. A lot of teenagers use cell phones several times a day as well. Cell phones are useful for teenagers because they help build relationships, communicate, have many uses, and can help people learn and teach.
For example, two families living on opposite sides of the world can now communicate using Skype, or any means of telecommunications application software in order to keep in touch and stay connected with one another. This technology does not come without its consequences; using technology to keep in touch with loved ones from afar has turned into communicating with another from across the room. Those mostly affected by the increasing usage of technology are adolescents. The Pew Research Center conducted a research titled “Teens and Technology 2013” (Madden et al., 2013). This report consist of data collected from not only adolescents ranging in age of 12 to 17 but also from the parents of those adolescents, where it is reported that 74% of “teens ages 12-17 say they access the internet on cell phones, tablets, and other mobile devices at least occasionally” (Madden et al.,
How is technology impacting teens’ mental health? It’s no secret that technology is a necessity nowadays, and the popularity and dependency is only growing. This is especially seen in teenagers. The question we need to ask ourselves is how is this dependency affecting our health and overall well being? Teens need about 9.5 hours of sleep a night. However, less than 20% of teenagers actually achieve this, according to a poll from the National Sleep Foundation from 2006. Due to the immense growth in popularity of technology, it can be assumed that this number has fallen in the last 11 years. Sleep deprivation can make people more irritable, tired, and susceptible to illness. Teens feel pressured to be reachable 24/7, and therefore stay up later in order to be able to talk, play games, watch videos or
To begin with, advertisements of technology are effective based on the advanced technology and new designs, they are not ethical because they are a distraction to teens when teens begin to get addicted to advanced technology. Advanced technology and its new designs are popular to teenagers. New laptops and phones are very popular in this generation. According to the article, “Technologies Affecting Modern Teenagers” it says, “The prevalence of smart phones has given teenagers access to not only calling and texting abilities, but also online access regardless of location. Teens, who have a tendency to emphasize their social standing over their academic performance, often abuse their smart phone privileges, especially texting and Internet use, using these tools at inappropriate times. “ (Technologies Affecting Modern Teenagers. 2013) Now that technology has advanced more teenagers are very into the new features it contains and are attracted to them at inappropriate times. Advertisers know what teenagers are attracted to, and they try their hardest to influence them to buy it. According to the article “Why Teens Are the Most Elusive Customers in Tech” it states that, “While older millennials looked to television shows like MTV's Total Request Live to tell them what was in style, today's teens are discovering trends and deciding for themselves” (Why Teens Are the Most Elusive Costumers in Tech. 2015) This describes what teenagers are into and that is new advanced
Mobile technology has become an integrated part of people's lives. It has enabled us to do multiple innovative tasks that we couldn't have done before, such as messaging people, creating presentations and documents, and watching that hilarious video your friend posted on Facebook, all on the go. Mobile technology is even being used in the business world to do work from anywhere. There are multiple reasons why mobile technology is important and affects people in a positive way. However, mobile technology can also have a negative effect on people, specifically teenagers. Mobile technology is affecting teenagers today negatively through the use of cell phones while driving and the behaviors that mobile technology can inflict upon teenagers.
Should parents limit how much time children spend on technology devices? Technology forms the growing mind. The younger the mind, the more adaptable it is, the younger the technology, the more unproven it is. The young minds and lives will improve, society gains, and education will be changed for the better. This experiment involves children getting using technology at school and/or at home in belief that technology will improve the aspect of learning and prepare the growing for the future . But will it change for the better?
Have you ever buried your face in your smartphone for hours? Have you missed out on events or told your friends you couldn’t hang out because you just wanted to stay at home and watch Netflix or play video games? If so, you probably have, or have previously had, an addiction to technology. The first Apple iPhone was only released ten years ago, and it is becoming a bigger issue for this generation’s teenagers. Teenagers are abusing modern technology it’s affecting them and others negatively because it encourages irritability and depression, discourages face-to-face interaction, and puts teenager’s privacy and safety at risk.
These findings should be shocking to people, that the amount of time that we spend on using technology, 4 -8 hours a day sometimes even more than 8 hours a day should alarming. Generations are not being taught to communicate with people and ask simple questions about how someone’s day was or what they did over the weekend, instead they towards technology and social media to see.
We cannot deny that social media has taken over conventional media in the world today. We can easily see that they have impacts on our society. Since the introduction of social network sites years ago, to communicate with friends and family has been easy once you have access to internet. The definition of social media is "the relationship that exist between network of people" (Walter & Riviera, 2004). In the last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically. Thanks to the ivention of social media, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate. Seventy-three percent of wired American teens now use social media websites (oberst, 2010). Schill (2011) states that the social media sites encourage negative behaviors for teen students such as procrastination catching up with friends , and they are more likely to drink and drug. However, every day, many students are spending countless hours immersed in social media, such as Facebook, Myspace, World of Warcraft, or Sim City. At first glance this may seem like a waste of time, however it also help students to develop important knowlegde and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content. At present, whether social media is favorable or unfavorable, many students utilize these sites on a daily basis. As social media sites continue to grow in popularity it is our belief that technology is a vital part of today 's
Social media has become a very popular, valuable asset for everyone all over the world. Social media s great to use when reconnecting with an old friend, promoting a new business, or just when one needs a good laugh. While social media has great advantages, it also carries many disadvantages, particularly for the youth. While most adults are not able to let social media consume a large portion of their time, adolescents frequently become consumed in social media. That being said, almost every adolescent uses some form of social media or social networking including Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, Facetime, texting, etc. While some adolescents are encouraged to join social sites by family and peers to make new friends or form new connections,
A Pew Research Center survey uncovered that “92% of adolescents ages 12-17” reported using the internet daily (Wartella, 2016). Not only is technology commonly used by adults, but this data from the Pew Research Center suggests adolescents additionally use technology for countless other purposes. The increasing omnipresence of the Internet in the lives of adolescents is by now well recognized. Furthermore, adolescents use digital technology at a scale never seen before to operate both unprofessional and professional applications without fully understanding the consequences. Adolescents use technology as both a personal and an educational tool; however, the long-term developmental effects technology will have are highly debated. Within that decade of development, digital technology has come to be used for a multitude of things, including personal communication and educational development.
