While there are many people that make a lot of posts on social media based on their views or beliefs, it
Like technology, our species has adapted to fit modern times. Through these adaptations, we have begun to communicate through our newly developed technology by means of social media. In today’s society, we are surrounded by sites such as Facebook, Twitter, E-Mail, and various other websites that can often times consume our lives. While social media has plenty of advantages, it also has disadvantages that often times get ignored. As Internet users, it is important to examine these disadvantages and make sure we understand the negative sides to social media.
Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe identify that social networking sites are among the main use of internet today. According to the authors, social networking sites are among the social media platforms that facilitate interaction in the computer environment. The writers identify the main motives for using social networking sites, for example, Facebook. One of the benefits is that Facebook improves the quality of life both social and at workplaces. According to the writers, social media has become common in the society that a majority cannot remember previous life without them. Social networking sites have become popular among college students who find it as a major platform for social interaction.
One danger that is often overlooked by social networking users is social comparison. The phrase “social comparison” refers to the idea that people determine their own self-worth through evaluating and comparing themselves to others. This is especially prevalent on social networking sites. Users of social networking sites often strive to make their lives seem perfect. In order to achieve this, users will only post their “highlights” or positive points in their lives. One author states, "When you're on a site like Facebook, you get lots of posts about what people are doing. That sets up social comparison — you maybe feel your life is not as full and rich as those people you see on Facebook,” ("Social Media: Does social media have a positive impact on the world?"). However, it is not the fact that the users may unintentionally be posting only their highlights that could be potentially dangerous. Rather, it is the fact that another user may compare their own life to another user’s. For example, a user could be scrolling through a site and see another user’s highlights and begin comparing their own life to the other user’s. As a result, a user could start to develop a lower self-esteem. Their sense of self-worth may also be damaged in the process. This obsession of one’s self-image can have severe consequences such as feelings of depression or loneliness ("Social Media: Does social media have a positive impact on the world?").
Nowadays, people already live in a digital age, and they rely on the technology to give them information and make connection with others. When the social media comes first, people’s curiosity triggers them to explore the cyber space. However, when the constant stream of content comes to people, they will question whether the information benefits to them. In my own perspective, I think that the social media has two sides, which contains advantages and disadvantages. Once the social media meets people’s needs, they will ignore the harmful side. Individuals are finding a space which can give them a safety environment, and they can control the distances and relationships with their families and friends. Also, the social media gives them an opportunity to get in touch with
In today’s century social media is the main way to communicate with people with people all over the world. It has become very popular... even more popular than a text or video message. Some social sites even help you find love. However, there are many positive things that can come out social media but there are many negatives too.
I believe that social media and technology is the most popular activity and material that people get attached and attracted to.
