In life, people in poverty may lead to sacrifice, for the people they love, because they have a role in life. In the book The Color of my Words by Lynn Joseph, is a story through a little girl's perspective, and who learns how her writing can affect her future and the future of everyone she knows. My first reason, that supports my claim is that everyone in the Dominican republic is in is poverty. Which may lead to desperation and most of all sacrifice. For example, Guario (Eldest brother), has to work two jobs to support his family, but even if he has the best jobs in town him and his family are still in poverty. But, since Guario is spending all his time fixing things around the house and working he has zero time to do what he wants “Guario worked two jobs, bought all of our food, and fixed everything”(p.21). For instance, Ana Rosa was willing to surrender writing because of Guarios death. “I promise I won’t write another word it was the only punishment.”(p.129). I think the author is trying to show how much grief Ana Rosa has at that time, because in the end Ana Rosa realized she could write it down, instead giving up her dream. To continue, another huge example of sacrifice that defines this whole essay, is when Guario gave up his life for, his sister, his family, and for what he believes in. Even at the very moment he died, he smiled and was happy because he was in a way satisfied with his choice. “Guario fell at the bottom of my gri gri tree,and my handsome, brave brother smiled at me.”(p.125). This demonstrates, great love for his sister and family. In addition, one of the goals Lynn was trying to get at was, to build suspense. I think that this was very powerful because it is a first person narrative, so you only know what the narrator knows in this case its Ana Rosa.
