Burnout is a gradual onset with symptoms coming on over time slowly. Burnout symptoms may include physical exhaustion, hopelessness, negative self-concept, having difficulty leaving home, and inability to concentrate are just some of the symptoms. Due to the gradual onset of symptoms, it is often hard to detect early (Dass-Brailsford, 2007). In McCann and Pearlman’s article they discuss burnout as a, “psychological strain from working with difficult populations” (McCann & Pearlman, 1990).

From the Communicative Competence Scale given, I have learned how much comfortable I am communicating with those in my surroundings. Christina Maslach and Susan Jackson are the most well documented researchers on burnout and the most frequently referenced in the literature. Maslach and Jackson (1981) defined burnout as consisting of three component: overwhelming emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishments. The feeling of being overworked/overextended and drained of physical and emotional resources is at the core of emotional exhaustion. Depersonalization refers to a cynical, negative attitude towards people one is interacting with (coworkers, clients, etc.), and excessive detachment and emotional numbing from the various aspects of the job. Feelings of emotional exhaustion subsequently lead to depersonalization. Depersonalization is a protective state of cynicism that spurs dissonance, either cognitive or emotional, with others as a coping strategy for work demands and exhaustion (Halbesleben & Buckley, 2004). Reduced personal accomplishment (also referred to as personal efficacy) refers to the feeling of ineffectiveness, unproductiveness, personal incompetence, and lack of the feeling of accomplishment on the
The research materials consisted of questionnaires, while two are standardized test and the other questions are to collect the sociodemographic and health data of the participants. It uses a scale system from 0 to 6 wherein 0 is never and 6 is for every day experience. (Ahola et al., 2005; Brenninkmeijer & van Yperen, 2003) Participants were assigned to a burnout group or non-burnout group based on their mean score. I dug into some research further regarding burnout and would like to share a few points I found extremely valuable from the journal article, Taking Care of Ourselves to Take Care of Others:
I believe my scores were generally accurate regarding how I feel and felt in the last 30 days. I obtained an ‘average’ score (around 50) in the section of compassion satisfaction, which I think defines how I feel. In the few opportunities I have to help others around me, I feel rewarded. I like to contribute positively to other people’s lives. In the case of the burnout section, I obtained a low score (43 or less). This means that I am not having high difficulties when dealing with work tasks or when performing my duties effectively. Even though there are times where I feel stressed out or that I am not helping clients as a mental health counselor yet, I have a good work environment where I feel comfortable with my coworkers and supervisor. We all support each other at work, which helps me emotionally. I thought I was going to get a higher score for burnout because of the combination of responsibilities from work and school. However, when I was rating the statements, I did not associate my stress or difficulties to a high level. This makes me reflect on how I really feel at work and avoid

As the daughter of two school teachers I have an excellent command of the English language and they taught me how to present myself in such a way to adapt to my audience and have a confidence in my words. These traits have allowed me to be successful in a number of various professions, but I find my ability to communicate with

How do you know if you have effective communication? To have effective communication you have to have an understanding of ones ideas. Another good way to know if you have effective communication is observations among people. Communication is a two way exchange that must involve both a presenter and a audience. It is important to have good quality interpersonal relations particularly in the health care industry because when you are in health care, you are talking to multiple people. When you are in health care, you are always interacting with other departments, nurses, office personal and patients. So it
Communicative language teaching (CLT) which was mainly developed from social science and humanities beyond language teaching concerns, has been followed for nearly three decades. Hymes from the linguistic anthropology (1971) and Habermas (1984) from social philosophy point of view, proposed different notions of communicative competence in CLT to be used in language teaching and assessment. Communicative competence, as Richards (1985) claimed, includes knowledge of the grammar, vocabulary of the language, rules of speaking, knowing how to use and respond to different types of speech acts and knowing how to use language appropriately. It is believed that the goal of second language teaching should be communicative competence, and it should include the ability to use language appropriately in social contexts in order to perform communicative functions and the ability to combine utterances and communicative functions according to the principles of discourse (Loveday, 1982; Canale & Swain, 1980).
