This agricultural study will examine the problem of the contamination of food products through pesticide usage in the United States. The United States is s global leader in the use of pesticides for large-scale industrial production of food products, which define the threat to the environment and the health of human beings. The necessity of producing more food for increasing human populations poses a threat in the use of pesticides to increase crop yields. However, pesticides cause inadvertent effects on human health through the toxicity of these chemicals in food products. This effect is counterintuitive to the well-being and nutritional standards of a health growing population in this type of industrial food production. In essence, an analysis of the contamination of industrial food products will be defined through pesticide usage in the United States. In a global context, the United States is the leader in the use of pesticides, which contribute to health problems due to contaminated food products being made with these chemical agents. Globally, the U.S. has been a global food producer, which has relied on pesticides to expand crop yields. In many cases, high levels of industrial farming production inadvertently contaminate the food through the use of pesticides. These aspects of industrial farming threaten the health and well-being of the American population:
Inappropriate agricultural intensification and excessive inputs of nutrients and chemical pesticides are
Traditional markets are replaced by the supermarket. “Market products are invariably indigenous and grown locally” (344) they remind us the kind of agriculture practiced in the area. Blemishes and the odd shapes of fruit and vegetables remind us they are still grown by traditional method. Foods are grown naturally without any pesticides, herbicides and antibiotics which are healthy for our lives. Technology has enormous benefits we can produce any kind of products even it’s not the season. The use of pesticides supplies higher crop yields, reduces the cost and labor of farming, and produces relatively unblemished, visually appealing produce. However, some scientists think that pesticide residues in conventional foods could, over many years,
Agriculture is the most fundamental resource of society. Without it, humans could not live, especially in the ways we do now where people reside in cities. This means that those cities could not exist without large scale agriculture to sustain them. Since agriculture is such a necessity, people have developed methods to gain more from their land. One of the many solutions besides machinery they have developed to produce higher crop yields is through the use of pesticides. However, those pesticides which have resulted in high crop yields have come at price, and that is human health itself. This seems rather contradictory. Pesticides were designed to help people and society by increased the success of producing high crop yields, and they
Nonprofit organizations such as Cultivate the City raise awareness of issue concerning pesticides; they are farmers who aim to feed families and communities with pesticide-free, locally-grown food. They also help people grow and develop skills and access resources to start successful and sustainable farm operations. By doing this, the organization teaches the people that there are methods that they can use to grow fruits, plants, etc. that do not put them at risk of developing any illnesses linked to pesticides. According to the Toxic Action Center, “Pesticides have been linked to a wide range of human health hazards, ranging from short-term impacts such as headaches and nausea to chronic impacts like cancer, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruption” (Toxic Action Center ). Some of these impacts can even be fatal when the exposure is higher. Cultivate the City seeks to further expand their mission .They have been currently working with schools to integrate the garden with the classroom curricula and it is a great way to get involved and educate children at a young age. This is important because 13 percent of apples, 7.5 percent of pears and 5 percent of the grapes in the US food supply expose young children eating these fruits to unsafe levels of organophosphate insecticides (Cummins 1999). According to the CTC website, “Students at JO Wilson Elementary School help
It has been a prime location for studies to be conducted by health organizations to see if there are any links to the pesticide usage occurring along with people living in the vicinity of where it is being used. ARTICLE PESTICDES STUDY (Kehoe) The study correlates a link between certain chemicals that are used in the manufacturing of pesticides and these chemical ORGANOCHLORINES to Alzheimer’s disease along with many autism related defects between children. Children are who we try to keep safe as they are the young and will be our future. Pregnant women living in pesticide applied areas were more likely to have a child with birth defects as the chemicals are absorbed through the air and can reach the fetus via the bloodstream. These are also the most susceptible to these chemicals being used by farmers and the by the produce they
As Gliessman, an agricultural researcher, says in Agroecology, “conventional agriculture is built around two related goals: the maximization of production and the maximization of profit. In pursuit of these goals, a host of practices have been developed without regard for their unintended, long-term consequences” (3). The industrial food industry has created a process to produce as many crops as possible in the quickest amount of time to put onto the market. The several ways utilized to achieve these goals are those that are harmful to the consumer. Two main threats are genetic modification, and chemicals. These issues are a spark of concern in addressing the health of consumers. Food industries often try to tantalize their audience with the promise of untouched, pristine produce when in reality these foods are heavily tainted by pesticides or are genetically modifieds. “One will find this obliviousness represented in virgin purity in the advertisements of the food industry, in which food wears as much makeup as the actors. If one’s whole knowledge of food from these advertisements, one would not know that the various edibles were ever living creatures, or that they all come from the soil… “ (Berry 147). People are informed little about the pesticides that we often ingest from products like these and little do people know the negative effects of GMOs.
Many economically important field crops in the United States depends on the labor of migrant and seasonal farmworkers. Over the past years the United States has had the largest population of immigrants. Of course many of these immigrants are from different places in the world; but the largest population is from Latin America. Over half of the immigrant population is from Latin America and almost 40% entered the US in the past decade (Pransky, 2002). Recently many of these immigrate live and work in the metropolitan area. The ages rang from 18 to 64. Considering the number of immigrants thriving the health status and needs of immigrants is important. This issue of immigrant farmworker is not being discussed in day to day basis. Many of these immigrants migrate for work but find themselves living in poverty, language barriers, working conditions, no health insurance and etc...Agriculture in the United States highly depends on chemicals like pesticide, growth regulator, and fertilizer. Every year 1 billion chemical is applied. Considering the amount of chemicals applied migrate are at a high risk of pesticide exposure since chemicals are in water, soil and plants. Pesticide exposure means getting pesticides in or on the body. This article will discuss four primary immigrates, reasons immigrate farm workers work mostly on fields, farm owner’s benefits, stress, pesticide explores, heavy machinery and treatments after being hurt. All of these terms will describe how they affects
Bolivia has doubled the amount of pesticides it imports over the past five years (Langman). Of all the pesticides Bolivia imports inside the country, 30% of it is contraband that is smuggled in illegally (Langman). According to studies done by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, developing countries use 20% of pesticides purchased on the global market, but have about 99% of all farmers who get poisoned by pesticides or insecticides (Langman). There are about 70,000 yearly poisonings that could possibly lead to death or have long term illness. Agribusiness companies such as Monsanto produce pesticides which are tested and approved by government entities before they are used. The underlying problem in this particular case is the use of cheap and toxic pesticides by inexperienced farmers without proper precaution over their personal health. The profitability to be made in the agricultural industry, especially that of GM crops in developing nations is so high farmers are willing to seek maximum profit by taking shortcuts and purchasing illegal pesticides so they can maximize
It is also shown that pesticides are partly responsible for the rising cancer rates and birth defects among children (“Pesticides”).
One concern about pesticides and herbicide usage is the amount of residues left on the end product of crops sprayed with the chemicals, and their effects on human health. (Williamson, 2007, p. 184). However, these effects are closely tested and levels are strictly regulated to ensure there is no danger from possible pesticide residues. Since 1910, many rules, regulations, and agencies have been formed to monitor the safety of the pesticides and herbicides used in conventional farming. These chemicals must meet specific safety standards in order to be registered for use, and regulations on levels of each product safe for use are also put in place. (Tafel et al.,2007, p.184). All pesticides are rigorously examined to ensure they have no significant effects on human health, or the environment. The residues in the food chain are closely monitored, and regularly tested, to ensure they are below legal limits. In a recent survey of residues
With the high demand of food supply, created by the people that live in this world, the high yield made possible by pesticide control is very much needed to supply us with affordable food. Also, high crop yields are financially beneficial to the economy. However, we must grasp an understanding on how all this started to keep up with this demand. The industrial food system began in the 1930s beginning with fast food at drive-ins. To keep up with the demand of food needed by consumers, manufacturers needed to
Organic and locally grown foods are becoming such an increasingly popular way of life in many different parts of the world, so much so, that some countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Greece etc. have completely eliminated the use of unnatural things to produce their food such as genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), chemicals, and spraying fertilizers on their crops to “clean” them. The people of these countries have identified how harmful these defective products are to the environment and more importantly, their bodies. Farmers who use chemicals and pesticides
The purpose of this research is to further investigate the long-term effects of the consumption of genetically engineered crops (GE), the herbicide glyphosate or Roundup, and other food safety concerns in relation to an increased rate in chronic illnesses in the United States in the last two decades. Secondly, to confirm the collusion and corruption between the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Environmental Protection
The health of the workers spraying pesticides in cotton fields and its inhabitants are badly affected. There by causing symptoms like headache, nausea, tremors, depression, seizures, loss of consciousness, and, in some extreme cases – death. Empty pesticides containers are reused which again harm the environment and leaves its negative effect on the health of its users. The use of such toxic leads to air, water and soil pollution. Apart from the pests, pesticides also cause great harm and leads to death of small animals and birds consuming them inadvertently. According to W.H.O there have been nearly 2 billion USD worth of pesticides used annually, of which pesticides worth about 819 million have been declared
Knowing where your food comes from is a key factor in any person’s diet. A pesticide is a substance used to destroy insects or other harmful organisms. Commonly used pesticides are insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides; if either of the four pesticides are consumed, side effects may include: dizziness or nausea, chest pains, difficulty breathing, or muscle aches. All four pesticides are used in the process of cultivating an average American’s fruits and vegetables found at any local grocery store. Most “fresh produce found in these grocery stores are highly processed and grown using pesticides along with hormones, antibiotics, and genetic modification” (CUESA, 2017). These products will have a very negative effect on human health. A better alternative to buying produce from local grocers is buying produce from the farmers market. The benefits of buying from a farmers market is: being able to meet the actual cultivator, it is highly likely that the produce is minimally
When you eat an apple, do you wash it? Have you ever wondered why? It’s because there are pesticides on them which are not healthy for us or our environment in any way, shape, or form. This is one of the many topics that have to do with food safety. Pesticides, oversea contamination, and meat contamination are all things the U.S. inspection companies, the FDA and the USDA Pilot Program are failing to take control of and monitor. They are becoming a major problem in our country. Why this however? Are they lazy? Who knows, but this issue that is having an enormous impact on our nation needs to be solved. One side of the debate believes that the system we are using now is just fine. They believe that it is practically impossible to farm
