The Counseling Center believes as clients become more accepting of themselves, they are more adept of finding contentment in their lives. Though, self-awareness and self-acceptance are goals that occasionally require an extended time to achieve. If counseling is effective, the client will sense that he is capable to face life’s trials in the future minus any aid or intervention from The Counseling Center.
Client/Counselor Relationship:
• Counseling sessions are intimate emotionally and psychologically, it is imperative for the client to understand that the client and counselor have a professional relationship instead of a personal one. Interactions will be constrained to paid sessions with the counselor. Between session exchanges via email will be discussed in advance and acknowledged that they may not constitute an actual therapeutic session. My pursuit of becoming a School Counselor led me to apply to the School Counseling Master’s Program at University of Maryland, College Park. I am a former student at University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. After graduating and teaching for two years in Prince George’s County Public Schools, I discovered my true passion lies not only in the classroom and students’ academics, but playing a pivotal role in the growth of their career, social, and personal development. Although I am no longer teaching full-time at the moment, my interaction with students from diverse backgrounds left an indelible responsibility to continue making a difference in our students. The objectives and mission of the School Counseling Master’s Program at University of Maryland can best help my goal of becoming an effective counselor and leader who is an agent of change to students and service the mental and emotional well-being of the younger generation.
I believe counseling is a collaborative partnership between client and counselor. Furthermore, this collaborative partnership is built from trust and acceptance of both client and counselor. I hope in conjunction with clients to understand the issues and concerns so to help them tap into their wisdom, creativity, and strengths to meet their current challenges. I believe in a comprehensive perspective through which clients can better comprehend themselves in the framework that our thinking about events can lead to emotional and behavioral upset. Moreover, counselors are to provide a safe environment for clients to explore their challenges and identify ways to move differently in overcoming these challenges.

There are many values this writer wishes to incorporate into a counseling relationship. The fundamental values this writer wishes to incorporate are: flexibility, self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy. The ability to be flexible and alter what one does in order to fit the client’s needs is crucial to establishing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship. Flexibility can be demonstrated in many different ways, such as the way the therapist interacts with the client, the tone of voice that is utilized, down to the way the therapist provides material to the client. In being flexible, treatment is able to remain focused on the client and his or her needs (Egan, 2014).

As I walked to the Hazen Center for my 8PM appointment, unaware of what to expect, my nerves slowly aroused, for this is the first counseling session I ever encountered. After filling out a few forms and waiting patiently for about five minutes, my name was called and I finally came face to face with my counselor, Sean Spooner. After shaking hands and introducing ourselves, I took a seat on the couch, attempting to ease my worries. Based on the knowledge I obtained from Intro to Counseling such as Counseling environment, self-disclosure, and counselor attributes, I could not help but observe and evaluate my surroundings. The couch was a comfortable seating with enough room to lay down and the office had awards and certificates displayed on the wall and desk. My counselor sat on what I call the “comfy chair” approximately diagonal from me. Sean Spooner’s persona seemed apprehensively inviting. The apprehensiveness is a result of his slightly shaky voice and facial expressions. The inviting portion is a result of his professionalism. He explained to me the reasoning for these sessions, videotaping, reiterating procedures, guidelines of confidentiality, signing more forms and in the midst still managed to ask if I am well, have any questions or concerns, which did make me feel more comfortable in comparison to my earlier arrival.

This movie is about how families and friends cope with a mental illness. With the help of Dr Berman, it is clear how to be able to unravel Lars’s needs in a slow pace.
