We have become so dependent on the internet. It is a daily essential and most of us could not live without it. With how important it is to our everyday lives, you would think we would be a bit more conscious about the negative impact it has. The three resources in this week’s analysis assignment were an eye-opening reminder not only to the dangers of the internet and technology, but to the importance of understanding and acknowledging these dangers. The School of Life (2014), video The Dangers of the Internet, did not bring up anything that we have not heard before. It did bring up new insight into the effects and statistics on internet dangers. However, if one was not careful when listening to the message of this video, one could find …show more content…
We have come to believe that if it is on the internet it must be true. Not only that, but like the video discussed, if we see several people share the same bit of information, so many share it without giving any thought or even making sure that the information they are sharing is even true. The last two internet dangers I feel are our biggest concerns as of recently. With the current debate on net neutrality, it is very clear that privacy is a major concern. The video mentioned, 70 percent of us have a fear about the things we share online, (The School of Life, 2014). However, we still share so much of ourselves online. Kate Bussmann (2014) did a great job at explaining this, “Where once we saw the internet as the equivalent of an encyclopedia, and search engines as librarians, now we treat them as our closest confidants.” Even if we do not share our private information willingly and knowingly, we still share it. This sharing of information is what leaves us vulnerable to the last danger, online crime. Since we share so much of our private information in the digital world, we expose ourselves to criminals. Very recently, we had the Wannacry ransomware attack. Although this attack was ultimately stopped, it still shows how at risk we are to these types of attacks. This attack did not just affect the general public, but it also had bigger targets like British’s National
Throughout history, no single piece of technology has been so heavily relied upon such as the internet. Things such as the first car, the first telephone, and even the first airplanes were not as easily, or readily accessible as the Net is today. In all reality, the internet is the greatest and most useful tool that humanity has ever dreamt up. From instant transferring of data to endless sources of information, the Net not only connects all corners of the world, but makes each and every person more knowledgeable and self-aware. But as with all new and virtuous things, there is a darker and more dangerous side. The internet is a tool that consumes the intellectual, changing the way the brain functions and ultimately creating a reliance. This reliance is so severe that all of life’s functions depend on the internet without the same dependency being reciprocated. The relationship is one sided, where the Net has much to gain while the user has little. Furthermore, in its relatively new state, the internet is very obscure and has very questionable ethics. Although beneficial in specific cases, the internet affects one’s emotional state and latently mars cognitive function while creating a devastatingly powerful and coercive reliance.
Internet safety has been an extensive issue for children and adolescents since accuse to the Internet has become readily available in homes. With Internet use increasing at such rapid rates and a large proportion of adolescents using the Internet daily, the awareness of Internet safety should be addressed. The term Internet safety can be defined as “the knowledge of maximizing an individuals safety to private information, and self protection from using the Internet”. The impact and influence that the Internet has on adolescent life is far-reaching and research findings by Norris (2007) indicate that one-quarter of the American youth that go online at home, do so in the privacy of their rooms. Additionally, with the recent trend of wireless connections there has been a profound expansion in private Internet usage. The diverse means by which adolescents are using the Internet has become coupled with inherent risks of unsupervised and uneducated use.
The Internet has affected our lives in a considerable way. We use the internet in order to connect with society, look up information for work and educational purposes, shop, handle daily errands such as paying bills and so on. Children are not excluded from this, in fact they are capable of using internet more effectively than adults. The reason for this being that chıldren are able to learn to use new technology faster than theır adult counterparts. It is wıdely accepted that having internet connection can be very useful for children, teachers and children consider internet as a powerful tool to access to academic sources to research for theır classes and homework (Ofcome, 2007). Also having the internet
Since its inception in the late 1960s, the internet has changed the expansion of communications to new levels. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and many others have provided the public with means of communication. The sharing of photos, thoughts and even ideas has become a more prevalent event for everyone as time has progressed. Computers, tablets, and phones are used widely each day for social media sites, as well as purchasing items of luxury and gifts for loved ones. The ability to communicate from your computer to anyone else all over the world is exciting, but do we even question the safety or privacy of the internet anymore? Would we be surprised at how much the
The Internet is quickly and widely diffusing into society as a whole, especially into families, as a result, a large proportion of adolescents have access to and make use of the Internet daily, (where adolescence refers to the teenage years of a person’s life). Statistically speaking, surveys conducted by the YISS (Youth Internet Safety Survey) state that, 95 percent of adolescents studied have used the internet at least once in their lives and 83 percent of the adolescents surveyed have access to the internet at home. This much exposure and unhindered access to the internet warrants exploration for adolescents, more understandably a means of answering every question that may come to their young minds. The safety of adolescents while using
The Internet is the technological genius of the computer age. Although the Internet is a phenomenal tool, providing access to the world, it has also become a Shangri-La for criminals. The Internet because of the ability to remain anonymous is the perfect playground for this type of mayhem. This
The internet is an ever-evolving platform that more and more people use everyday. Being so adaptable and ambiguous, people take advantage of the internet for productivity, information, and entertainment. While others take a darker turn, and take advantage of people and exploit their lack of knowledge, or commit crimes by taking advantage of the ambiguous nature of the internet. The internet though it may be misused is a key factor in the daily lives for billions of people around the world, and should remain uncensored, for the entirety of its lifespan.
“With great power come great responsibility” as famously said by Uncle Ben from Spiderman. Nowadays, people have smartphones and personal devices that allow for us to escape from reality while also giving us powerful functionality tools like alarms, calendars, and access to Google. We, as a modern tech savvy society, must be aware and wise when using technology and the Internet since the dangers are everywhere. As a result, society has become overly dependant with using technology within their daily lives, so much that it affects children, can lead to online dangers, and creates an unnecessary obsession among the users.
The Internet is a technology that has negative impacts on our daily lives. It has changed aspects of our life for the last 50 years, and it has demonstrated the considerable influence on people’s lives. Almost 3.2 billion people in the world use the internet. The Internet has gained acceptance across the globe, and it has also become a reason behind the critical changes in the modern society. Some of the changes are social isolation, health disorder, lack of privacy and internet addiction.
The invention of the internet will always be remembered as one of the greatest creation of all time. The internet allowed communication and the accessibility to a seemingly endless about of information throughout the whole world, instantaneously. The anticipation of a loved one’s letter through the mail was no longer needed after the internet and the birth of social media. Like many great inventions there are always negative repercussions that were not expected within the outcome. The internet has improved humanity in any ways but the negatives effect over whelm the positive. Internet technology has allowed cybercrimes and social media to negatively impact humanity.
With broad information outputs, the internet has widely shaped the world we live in today. From being a source that can aid one with education such as homework or a tool to be tutored online, to helping one do last minute online holiday shopping if one procrastinated and is now in a rush to find gifts for one’s family. Therefore, the question ponders when does one draw the line on the magnificently powerful tool we call “the internet” as it stops aiding one and starts becoming harmful to one mentally and physically. This can be illustrated through theoretical scenarios such as one can begin to commit self-harm to oneself trying to achieve what is seen online. From advertisements all the way to friends, one may have on their accounts on
Ever since the blade or combustion engine, we have seen the positive and negative consequences of technology. The internet has been one of the fastest evolving technologies of humankind, and made its way into almost every progressive culture around the world. As a rapidly growing and popular technology, I believe it is important to look at the far reaches of the internet, to understand the potential consequences towards users.
When it comes to the world of technology, so much has changed within society because of the popularization of computers, Internet and cellular devices. With the possibilities that these devices create, it also has the ability to cause friction and troubles within the society that it benefits. Many people are susceptible to computer hacks whether they are people who simply own computers for everyday use, or use a computer to run their businesses. Because hackers often get away with their crimes, it has been a topic that has been heavily discussed recently. With all of the negative aspects that have arisen from the popularity of the Internet, it could be shut it down to avoid these inevitable problems, or as a collective society we can think of ways that we can handle Internet use in a responsible manner. Although these problems can occur, there is no doubt that the Internet has advanced our society in life changing ways. It has saved lives, helped educate people in larger masses, can be used as a tool for research, and has many more constructive uses. If we learned how to use the Internet in a responsible way and respected its convenience instead of abusing it, we would see decline in the unfavorable associations that are often correlated with the Internet.
It can clearly be seen that the in the 19th century the internet was traditionally developed for the use communication and also protection. However today, in the 21st century the use of the internet is not only used as a means of communication but it used as a means of expression, isolation and discrimination. Through the advancement and the launching of social networking in 1997 the internet has become the new play ground for almost everyone in the world. Therefore when Ralph Hanson wrote seven truths about the internet, he acknowledged the truths that most individuals would say. Truth number five states “New media are always scary” (Hanson, R. n.d)
A major threat that nearly everyone who goes on the internet faces is the attack of hackers who can pretty much strike anyone at any time inflicting major damage and loss of money. These hackers are able to gain your confidential information using special hacking tools, this means they can get your credit card number that you gave out when doing online shopping and use it much to there benefit. These people are also able to create viruses that have the sole purpose of destroying and damaging your computer software. The “I love you” e-mail that was circulating the web recently is a good example of what people are capable of.
