In this research paper, I am going to discuss the plan that the Department of Homeland Security has set forth for the years of 2012-2016. This plan outlines the entire vision of the department to essentially accomplish their missions and goals. The plan consists of missions varying from border security to cyber security. We must not forget the men and women on the front line working hard to ultimately secure and provide safety for the United States of America. The Department of Homeland Security National Strategic Plan was created to outline the department’s missions, goals, and visions from the years of 2012-2016. The first objective of this mission to combat terrorism is to collect and analyze intelligence and to share intelligence with local, state, and federal agencies. It is critical that the department shares intelligence with all agencies so everyone can do their part to help stop terrorists. Another objective is to deter terrorist operations or counteract any acts of terrorism. The next objective would be to protect potential targets that terrorists may have in mind to attack. Also, stopping violent extremists within America is critical to preventing domestic terrorism. Last but not least of the objectives is to make communities aware of terrorism and to “say something” if they see anything suspicious. All of these objectives play a critical responsibility to combat terrorism and prevent any future attacks. The second mission of the strategic plan is to secure our borders. It is vital to our national security that we must secure our borders. Millions and millions of illegal aliens are illegally entering the United States a year and are posing significant threats to our national security. Not only are weapons and drugs entering our country, there could be possible terrorists that are perpetrating our borders also. Border security is also vital to the economic standpoint.
