Relationships, and Later Life There are many disorders that affect how the brain works. Some of these disorders can stem from birth, while others appear later, almost at random throughout someone’s life. Autism seems to be a disorder that develops from birth, although most children are not officially diagnosed until they are about two or three years old. Why is this? One can infer that it very well may be that most children tend to begin speaking at two years of age— linking the disorder with communication. Overall, Autism is a very elaborate developmental disorder. It is a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s normal function; this further affects the development of one’s communication skills, such as talking (Nordqvist, 2008). Although there is no official cause that directly leads to having Autism, there are many theories. Researches have various ideas pending about what may cause this disorder. Some suggest that different genes, when combined together perfectly, create and develop Autism (Dryden-Edwards, 2014). Others simply propose that outside factors such as environmental pollution, emotional trauma, or vaccines can spark Autism in an infant (Dryden-Edwards, 2014). Autism is often characterized by the difficulty in connecting and establishing relationships with other people and in the use of language and intangible ideas. Autism is fast becoming a very familiar disorder. Many people across the nation have been trying endlessly to find a treatment for it. There have been limitless establishments which have been continuously trying diverse ideas and ways to bring funding for further research for Autism as well as bringing more awareness towards it. Autism is a biological disorder that roots in the human beings brain and slowly damages it in specific ways. The effects of the autism mostly start to show in the early ages of the children. Many gene factors can contribute to autism like your mother/sibling having it, or the way your brain is developed. Environmental risk factors can also influence the child to have autism, like the way the infant is born or if pregnant women are near chemicals. Social and physical are the main symptoms that occur in a person with autism. The characteristics of a person with social symptoms could be repetitive behavior and OCD. Repetitive behavior shows that people who have autism seem to repeat the same things over and over again. People with autism often have OCD, they will organize their toys in a specific way. A few people with autism can benefit from medication but no one medication can help people with autism. Therapy is also a way people with autism can improve in social and physical skills. There’s the theory of issues with mother’s pregnancy. Such as the age of the mother, illnesses the mother has, low birth weight of the mother, and difficulty during the time of birth can be combined in different ways and can cause different levels of autism. There could be issues in the brain that could have started at the when the child was a baby. There can be different chemical connections that don 't connect correctly. There has also been a number of genes that have been known to improve the chances of autism. Many people have this throughout the world, but some people don’t know what they can do about autism because the question is what can they do to help them? How can they help them? Today, rates of autism found in children have increased over the past few decades. However, doctors and scientists do not know what the causes of this mental illness are? Some common assumptions that are considered causes of autism are found through genetics, environmental factors, or when the child is first diagnosed with autism or ASD. “According to a MIT computer scientist with no background in agriculture, genetics, or epidemiology, half the country’s children will be born with autism by 2020s because of the increased genetically modified crops.” (Suresh 4).
An Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurological condition that effects social interactions and communication. The Autism Spectrum Disorder is present starting in the early childhood years. In earlier years Bettleheim thought autism spectrum disorder was acquired by a “psychiatric response to an unsupportive and deprived environment” (Hunt, pg. 305). The current understanding about how autism spectrum disorder is acquired is that the child’s brain poses neurological differences and starts before birth in the embryonic development of the child. Autism Spectrum Disorder can be acquired genetically and is acquired at birth but can not be confidently diagnosed until around the age of two. This is because children with autism do not have any physical characteristics. At age two children begin to interact with others and start to work on their communication skills and that is why the warning sign that the child could possibly be on the spectrum is around that age. A child with autism spectrum disorder is affected developmentally and educationally. Development and education go hand in hand and since children with autism have delays with communication and the use of language, they often have a difficult time in the classroom. It is important for early intervention to start with the child as soon as the child is diagnosed with autism.
