From the time a child enters kindergarten or pre- k, he or she is taught to be the best he or she can. This apparently innocent lesson can alter as a child matures throughout his or her education. Children often learn corrupt ways to get ahead in the highly good educational and social environments that the school presents. These bullying strategies may include pressuring others for answers on assignments to attain higher grades, which leads toward better college opportunities, or spreading social rumors about fellow students. Cyberbullying cannot remain denied as an issue in schools, at home, and in neighborhood communities because research displays that bullying causes an increase in suicide and incident rates. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts and over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, with almost 7 percent already attempting it (“Bullying and Suicide,” 1). According to Bullying Statistics, over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying (Cyberbullying Statistics, 1). This case study will focus on the psychological and physical effects of being bullied in the workplace both in person and through social media outlets. Until recently, I feel like workplace bullying has been seen as playful teasing. But people are now realizing that bullying is bullying and it is unacceptable regardless of one’s age or occupational position. This bullying ruins people’s lives and tears their confidence down. People are driven to quit their jobs or even go as far as committing suicide because of this harassment. Workers’ health is not the only thing affected by workplace bullying. Companies suffer because their employees are preoccupied with other worries and this causes them to be less productive.
The research project that I have chosen is Workplace bullying of social workers written by Kate van Heugten. I chose this topic because I felt that it spoke more to me. I have never personally been bullied but I have witnessed it happen. Not in a dramatic way just small children antics. At that time I wasn’t aware that, it was bullying. While reading an article about this topic, it made me realise how bullying is so common, even in professional environments. The topic itself grasped my interest instantly. I felt that this topic would be a real eye opener to how severe and common this topic is. This research project will give awareness to social work practitioners of the kind of bullying issues that happen every day in their work place. This could be a chance for social work organisations to create support services for social workers within their organisation.
