Social responsibility is built on a system of ethics, in which decisions and actions must be ethically validated before proceeding. If the action or decision causes harm to society or the environment then it would be considered to be socially irresponsible. Being socially responsible means that people and organization must behave ethically and sensitivity towards, social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues. Striving for social responsibility helps individuals, organization and government to have a positive impact on development, business and society. They are sworn to maintain high ethical standard and protect, serve and make society safer as a condition of their employment. Each office is then issued a badge which is used to identify whether a person is a law enforcement or not. The badge is a symbol of integrity, having integrity means being totally honest and truthful in every part of life, personally and professionally (International Association of Chiefs of Police, 2000). But do all officers uphold these requirement? Absolutely not! Oakland, CA. 2009. Oscar Grant was shot dead by Bay Area Rapid Transit law enforcement officer Johannes Mehserle, age 27. Officer Mehserle and other police officers had been responding to reports of a fight, and arrested and handcuffed Oscar Grant, age 22, and several others in a subway station. Mr. Grant was handcuffed, unarmed and lying on the ground when Officer Mehserle pulled out his gun and shot him in the back. In court Mehserle claimed he thought his gun was his Taser. He was sentenced to two years in jail and let out on parole in June 2011. This is another example of police misconduct/brutality. Not only should the offices be criminally charged but also force to pay any settlement out of their pockets for their wrongdoing. Due to Toyota’s financial greed and unethical practice, vehicles were wrongly equipped with faulty brakes, sticking pedals and poor quality door looks, which caused death of many Toyota customers and hundreds of dollars in damages. When a company like Toyota acts in an ethically questionable manner, it causes the company to lose customers and develop a negative reputation. Customer tend to lose faith in the company and have to look for better service
Although police officers take an oath to protect and serve citizens in our society. we have some officers that our corrupt and willing do anything just to protect themselves from being exposed from their unethical behavior. In 1994 three officers from New Orleans police department committed an unspeakable crime murder for hire and a violent drug gang. The killing of Kim grove was thirty-two years old and was gunned down by police officer that were there to protect her instead they killed her.
Social responsibility is a belief that one has both, the moral and ethical responsibility to base decisions based off of the effect which it will have on society. This means that as human beings it is our responsibility, better yet our obligation to work in coordination with one another in efforts to better the planet’s well-being as well as our company’s. Corporate social responsibility adheres to the same policy, only in a corporate environment. This means that every corporation has the innate ability to make decisions that affect our vitality as a whole when applying those decisions in business. Many believe that business entities should have an ethical duty to be socially responsible, to work towards increasing its positive effects on society while decreasing its negative effects. Many organizations look for opportunities to be socially responsible while also creating shareholder wealth.
When deciding what will benefit society, we evaluate if our actions are ethical or unethical. If the action is ethical, we would be considered socially responsible. Likewise, if the action is deemed unethical, then we would be considered socially irresponsible. A company that is focused on good ethics would be a company with strong social responsibility.
On the contrary, social responsibility applies only to an organization or business, whereas ethics applies to people’s behaviors and how the obligations determine whether an action is right or wrong. There are also four perspectives of social responsibility that is key as well. The first responsibility is economic responsibility. This is the perspective that says the social responsibility of an organization is to make profits and provide attractive returns on investment. This is an important responsibility to their employees as well as their supplier’s employees because this brings in the profits which is what gives them the money to be able to pay their workers as well as keep the business running properly. However, the Nike sweatshop issue has shown that this organization provided different treatment to employees in different countries in order to maximize their profit. When no law exist that specify how a company should act toward stakeholders, managers must decide what is the correct ethically, yet socially responsible thing to do.
Cohen, 2009 wrote in his article that Drucker defined social responsibility as the full responsibility of every organization to assume its impact on employees, the environment, customers, and whoever and whatever it touches. In essence, business organizations should care about the internal and external societal ecosystems where it exists. Other researchers such as (Halme, Roome, & Dobers, (2009)) consider Corporate Responsibility as activities implemented by a company that contributes to a better society including its environmental conditions. However, for the purpose of this paper, social responsibility, as defined by Drucker is adopted.
When we place our first step into the world of business, we have heard businessmen speak expressively about the aim of the company is to make profit and not to address social responsibilities. This is only certain truth to this statement as the world we live in now is evolving. People in the current era are more concern about social responsibility especially with corporations and their behaviours and plans. Corporate Social Responsibility encompasses the economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary expectations that society has of an organization at any given point in time (Carrol & Buchholtz, 2015). Corporate Social Responsibility is considered by many to take into account the impact the firm has on society, and also requires the individual to consider his or her actions in terms of the whole social system, and holds him or her responsible for the effects resulting of the acts of that individual (Carrol & Buchholtz, 2015).
