Currently healthcare is changing, “from the hospital into the community setting, shorter hospital stays, and an increase in day surgery procedures and an ambitious public health agenda have all increased demands on the workforce” (Carr & Pearson, 2005, p. 72). Therefore, the health care teams are now trying to adjust to the changes as well as meet the new demands (Carr & Pearson, 2005). As with most health care setting, there is a wide variety of health care workers with different skill sets. The diverse level of skills and roles in the health care system allows the increased workload to be spread appropriately when utilized correctly; this is called delegation. The new hires do not become trained until they have more experience on the floor. The ventricular assist device trained nurses are now getting burned out and complaining to management that something has to change. How can management resolve this conflict? There are numerous solutions to resolve conflict. Marquis and Huston have six strategies which are the following: negotiating, competing, accommodating, smoothing, avoiding, and collaboration (Dove, 1998). In the previous scenario, negotiating could be utilized. When negotiating, “each party must commit to equal sacrifice for compromise to be perceived as a win-win solution” (Dove, 1998, p. 31). Those that are ventricular assist device trained could agree to continue to take care of the ventricular assist device patients, as long as the other patients assigned were considered intermittent patients or are easy patients. The nurses that are not trained could agree to take on the heavier patient loads that are not ventricular assist device patients, such as transplant patients. Another strategy that could be utilized in this conflict is collaboration. In collaboration, “managers ask both groups to set aside individual goals and work together to establish priority or common goals; the focus is depersonalized, and both groups employ problem-solving techniques” (Dove, 1998, p. 32).
