The Food Industry

Satisfactory Essays

Food is one of the most central parts of our lives, so it makes sense that the food industry in any country would be one of the largest industries. In America, the food industry is one of the largest in the world. The American food supply is controlled by a few select corporations which act out of central locations. Tyson, Smithfield, Kellogg’s, and Monsanto are good examples of the types of companies that control what we put in our bodies. These massive corporations put power and profit above the health of consumers and employees, the livelihood of farmers, and the environment. The monopolization of the food industry has resulted in massive factories for meat and food production as well as shortcuts to make production cheaper and profits greater. Because of these shortcuts, consumers and workers suffer. Chickens are fed antibiotics to keep them healthy and help them grow and bacteria subsequently become antibiotic resistant. In similar fashion, cows are fed corn, not part of their natural diet, because it is cheaper than grass and easier to feed to the animals when they are confined to tiny stalls. The corn in their stomachs leads to a strain of acid resistant E.Coli. Multiple cases have been reported of consumers dying due to the resistant bacteria, spread nationwide when meat is processed by the companies’ large factories. Workers at these factories are paid low wages and expected to work in horrendous conditions. Workers in the Smithfield factory lose their fingernails
