The Generation Of The Technology

As generations go by, our predecessors assume we are skipping out on important aspects of life just to get a few extra minutes on our devices. In Catherine Rampell’s “A Generation of Slackers? Not So Much”, it is said the older generations believe Generation Y is “coddled, disrespectful, narcissistic, and impatient” (Rampell 388). In all reality our generation is just doing what it has to in order to thrive in the world we live in, where technology is one of the largest parts of our everyday lives. If the older generations that criticize Generation Y had grown up in Generation Y they would realize the world we live in requires the use of technology. The advancement of society with technology has shaped Generation Y to be the people that they are, relying on technology; however, older generations believe Generation Y is lazy.

The compare and contrast of these two generations; X is merely based on feedback and how the information is received and how the criticism can be used to accomplish goals and advancement opportunities. In regards to generation Y; prefers regulation via social networking websites to sustain firm information being provided to them. The issue in this generation is the multi function capability of basic mediation without higher authority assistance. Technology for the veterans and baby boomers is just a laughing situation to most, my views are they do appreciate change, they have traits of a human with autism; someone who accustom to routine.

People my age are often referred to as the Lost Generation, Generation Y, and the Millennial’s. Among these titles we also get ‘lazy’, ‘directionless’, and ‘entitled’. It seems like half of these names were given to us before we were even born, being grouped together with those who came before us. While reading the article “Boomerang Kids: What Are the Causes of Generation Y’s Growing Pains?” by Rosie Evans, she touched on the many reasons why we ‘Millennial’s’ might be the way we are.

There are currently six living generations in the United States, each with different characteristics, beliefs, and values. The things that define each generation’s culture are derived from their history, upbringing, and the lifestyle of their time. Our generation was born between 1980 and 2000. We are called Millennials. More specifically, we grew up in the South, which typically lends itself to being more conservative and religious. These characteristics, along with our instant gratification attitude, define who we are, what we believe, and how we view other generations. For example, we might have differing views with the Silent Generation. Some Millennials may feel the Silent Generation’s social, religious, and economic conservatism is outdated.

My mother would often say of my brother and I have it easier than when she was younger. She says that this generation is a lot lazier and more entitled than hers was. With the newest and latest devices and gadgets coming out every year, she says that the youth feels entitled to have them, but don’t want to do the work to get them. Both of my mom and dad had jobs when they were younger as well as most of their friends, making it her generation's American identity. She explained that there was not as many working laws for teenagers back then for after school jobs. With this came more responsibility, she also said that there was a lot more respect for adults as well as others in general. Things like Facebook allow youth to make rude comments on other’s posts without much thought of what they’re actually

I think the younger generations today take a lot of crap from older generations because of they way we do things. I feel a lot of older people don’t like the change with things like technology, laws, and other things along those lines, and therefore blame the younger generations. I completely agree that the younger generations have some spoiled brats, some younger people who are really rude, and don’t have manners. However I feel like we are discovering more, and more whether it is about the human body, technology, or the environment. I feel in my opinion that the younger generations are seen as dumb, irresponsible, lazy, and are not really given a chance to prove the older generations wrong.

Generation Y, also referred to as the Milennials, get so much criticism. Elders are quick to throw young adults under the bus; they say that Milennials are lazy, and about how easy it is growing up in this generation because of advances in technology. Anyone now and days can have information at the tip of their finger all they have to do is open the internet up on their phone, go to google, and type in what you want to know; all it takes is a click of a button. What elder people tend to leave out is how well we work together and how fast the task gets done. Another thing that’s left out is how many more millennials have full time jobs while they’re a full time college student, and how much more we volunteer. In A Generation of Slackers? Not

Generation Y are less brand loyal and the speed of the Internet has helped with the flexibility to change in its fashion, style consciousness and where and how it is communicated with. Lastly, Generation Y whichranges from 1995-2012. According to Generational Kinetics there are currently over 23 million Gen Z in the United States. Gen Z members are still largely kids and adolescents but have earlyindications of being increasingly self-aware, self-reliant, innovative and goal-oriented.One key difference from Millennials and Gen Z is that they don’t remember a time before social media. As a result, they tend to live much more of their entire lives from interacting with friends and family to making major purchases online and via their smartphones. Therefore, Gen Z kids will grow up with a highly sophisticated media and computer environment and will be more Internet savvy and expert than their Gen Y

Did you know that there is 80 million apart of Generation Y? That’s a lot, it is said that Generation Y is the “laziest generation ever”. Known as entitled, disrespectful and even “wimps” by many; some people have different opinions. Some people from this generation can be hard working, and not the stereotypical “teens these days”. Generation Y is known as the “laziest generation”, that results in making generalizations about the generation as a whole, but there are many exception.

People often forget, however, that Generation Xers laid the foundation for Millennials by establishing corporations such as Google, Apple, and YouTube. The Millennial Generation, which spans from roughly 1980-2000, is the first generation to grow up during a time in which technology was readily available, giving them access to ideas and information at the click of a button. They no longer had to go to the library and spend hours researching for the paper or project they needed to complete for school, but rather type their question into Google or Yahoo! in order to receive hundreds of thousands of results in less than a second. In addition to being known for their use of technology, Millennials are widely recognized as the most stressed generation.

According to Simon Sinek, millennials “are accused of being entitled and narcissistic, self interested, unfocused and lazy.” Even though Millennials lack in some aspects, he believes that parenting, technology, impatience and environment is to blame. As a millennial, I totally agree with Sinek’s point because I am affected by all the variables that he listed ever since birth. Millennials did not do anything wrong but, the way they were raised affected their attitudes.

Across the nation, people are talking about the Millennial generation and how different they are compared to others, but are they really that different? Millennials are lazy, entitled, and selfish, or as you may have heard may be essential to the modern workplace, either way, they are being talked about whether it is good or bad. To put it in other words, past generations are concerned for what the future will look like with this technology-dependent generation, but is that a bad thing if the technology is only going to advance from here on out? The older generation is being too harsh or are they just genuinely concerned about the future? Joel Stein (2013) has written an article about the Millennials, it is titled Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation he argues for them being a selfish generation but by saying that it is not a bad thing. The second article is by Liz Zarka (2017) Generation Me: The Millennial Generation’s obsession with being unique, she argues that they are the generation that needs to be concerned for. After reading both of these articles I agree with some of the points that both of these authors make, however, there are also some sections that I disagree with. My perception of the situation is that millennials may have all these negative characteristics but use them to an advantage that no other generation can has; along with the advancement of technology and the use of social media may have increased the narcissistic trait in them, but they use these traits to get what they want, however, being narcissistic isn’t always good there can certainly be some disadvantages.

In evolutionary terms, advancements in technology are the utmost fundamental events to have occurred in human history. Rapid growths in technology are extremely beneficial to our species. These growths include, however, not limited to: the invention of fire, invention of electricity, invention of cars and planes, and the invention of inter-networking (The Internet). The intention of the simplifying of life lead dramatically reduced the stress on human life. It enhanced life. The invention of fire opened up gateways to cooking, lighting and creation. The invention of electricity introduced the invention of the light bulb and batteries. The invention of cars and planes made traveling easier. Finally, the invention of the internet made retrieving information more accessible. All these inventions had one common intention. To make life easier, and it succeeded. Furthermore, exponential growth is expected from the growth and development of this technology. However, batteries, technology based on an outdated principle that hasn’t seen exponential growth yet. In fact, batteries are limiting the progression of society more than the average person suspects. According to Moore’s law which states that computational intricacy should grow exponentially every two years, batteries fall behind.
