The Giver, By Lois Lowry

As Edward Estlin Cummings once said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you are.” Though many people spend their childhood trying to be like everyone else, there are some people who aren’t afraid to be who they really are. While reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, there are many examples of growing up shown by symbols like the Ceremony of the Twelve, bicycles, and each child’s rights.

What do you do when you get a scrape on your knee? Or if your having a bad day and you want to have someone to talk to? Many people go to their mother when they get hurt, emotionally or physically. Mothers works hard and make sacrifices so we have a better life. In the book "The Giving Tree", the author Shel Silverstein uses the tree as a "mother" of the little boy because the tree played with the boy. The tree also would also give what she had to the boy, she would sacrifice what she had to make the boy happier. It would take care of the boy.

The Republic is considered to be one of Plato’s most storied legacies. Plato recorded many different philosophical ideals in his writings. Addressing a wide variety of topics from justice in book one, to knowledge, enlightenment, and the senses as he does in book seven. In his seventh book, when discussing the concept of knowledge, he is virtually addressing the cliché “seeing is believing”, while attempting to validate the roots of our knowledge. By his use of philosophical themes, Plato is able to further his points on enlightenment, knowledge, and education. In the story The Allegory of the Cave, Plato describes the perception of reality. He explains how to interpret ideas or objects in different perspectives. The story he tells about the cave could have influenced different modern day ideas. Some ideal examples might include religion, abuse, and imprisonment. Plato’s cave theory applies to all of these ideas and can show many different perspectives.

In Book VII of Plato’s The Republic, the allegory of the cave paints a picture of ordinary people imprisoned in a cave. They are facing away

In Plato's The Republic book VII he tells a story about prisoners in cave that were held captive. “Imagine that along this path a low wall has been built, like the screen in front of puppeteers above which they show their puppets.” (Plato PP) In today's society, it is not a cave rather a state of mind and the puppeteers are rather everything that we are exposed to. Every culture is stuck in a bubble, made to believe their values and traditions are above anyone's who are different. Socrates is explaining to the student how we only accept what we know to be true. The way society functions can be explained by us imagining a group of people whose existence has been inside of a cave. He explains that these prisoners are chained in a way that they are unable to turn to see in any other direction. There is a fire behind them that provides light which casts shadows that the captives believe to be entities. In order to understand the moral fabric of the world, it is important to question any information that is given to an individual, instead of blindly accepting the majority opinion and giving it full credibility and validity based on other people’s opinions. Plato’s work, The Republic introduces the allegory of the cave, which is metaphorical scenario that attempts to explain the importance of questioning norms that may seem trivial. Plato illustrates a cave where bounded prisoners have lived all their lives in seclusion, away from the outside world. The Giver by Lois Lowry tells us that you should always do the right thing at any cost. Jonas is a twelve year old boy living in a seemingly perfect society. He is worried about what assignment, or job he will be chosen for. During the ceremony of twelve, Jonas is skipped over, but in a twist of events, he gets the most important job of all; the Reciever of Memory. During the training, Jonas watches a video of his father releasing a child, which is murder. Angry and shocked, Jonas, with the help of The Giver, devises a plan to run away to “elsewhere.” Jonas and a newchild, whose life has been threatened, end up going through cold and starvation just to get there, but in the end, it was worth it.

Through our society we are all raised up to be independent and unique individuals such as being ourselves and expressing who each of us are to the world. However, in the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, everyone is raised to count on one another and everyone must look and act the same. Our society differs from Jonas’s in many ways, such as the family units, birthdays, and the way we each learn about our past.

Saturdays are for 10-minute drives to the library, reading until the 15-minute-until-closing announcement comes on. Saturdays are for books piled high beyond my head, heavy tote bags on my shoulder, and shelves upon shelves of written masterpieces.

1) What is my opinion about the statement, “What you are missing you already have”?

Every author has their own unique niche that grabs the reader’s attention and pulls them in. They paint a picture with their words and imagination that allows the reader to go on a journey they never have experienced before. Each author is this way, but within his or her own uniqueness they become significantly different. The uniqueness can rage from early 1800s British authors to twenty-first century authors and they can range author to author. For example, Shel Silverstein is not only a unique author but quirky and fun, he paints wild pictures through the words of his story and takes his readers on an adventure of a lifetime. By reading and analyzing the work of an author you can connect with not only the work but the author themselves, you gain a better understanding and through this understanding you can connect the piece to your own life.

“See human beings as though they were in an underground cave-like dwelling” (193). Although Plato’s famous allegory of the cave doesn’t appear until Book VII of The Republic, its significance cannot be understated. The meaning behind the Greek philosopher’s imagery manifests itself throughout the rest of the work, specifically Book I. After outlining the description of the cave and demonstrating how the rest of The Republic dramatizes it, I argue that Plato (or Plato’s Socrates) is revealing a relationship that posits philosophy, which can only come about through mutual respect, as critical for the city’s well-being, but ultimately not enough just by itself.

Jonas remarks that loving another person must have been a dangerous way to live. Describe the relationship between Jonas and his family, his friends Asher and Fiona, and the Giver. Are any of these relationships dangerous? Perhaps the most dangerous is that between Jonas and the Giver—the one relationship built on love. Why is that relationship dangerous and what does the danger suggest about the nature of love?

The Marxist criticism is based on the socialist theories of Karl Marx and how the readers must closely examine the dynamics of class as they attempt to understand the works they read. In a world where there is no pain, no prejudice, no emotion, and no detestation. Lois Lowry gives a vivid description of a community where everything is equal, everyone is just as important as another, and life choices are made by only one individual. In the book The giver by Lois Lowry, it expresses the exact opposite of Marx’s most important ideas which is a prime example of what people will do if they were forced to live a certain way.
