Coaching The goal of coaching is to unleash potential within an individual, in order for the individual to reach high performance. Darryl Cross (2016) contends, “In most leadership coaching situations, the real objective is to help successful people become even more effective” (p. 2). Cross insists that the primary goal of coaching is to lift people to a higher level of effectiveness. Furthermore, Marshall Cook and Laura Poole (2011) believe that coaching will create a “higher level of engagement” from team members (p. 6). Team members, with proper coaching, will be more invested in the organization’s success. This investment into the organization’s success is evident in the local church setting. When volunteers are challenged to increase their level of effectiveness and are coached accordingly, those volunteers begin to show buy-in to the church’s mission statement. In addition, Dr. Beckwith (2016) asserts that coaching, “Provides the individual the ability to solve their own problems.” In other words, coaching gives people the tools to come up with the proper solution on their own. Furthermore, Darryl Cross (2016) asserts that coaching is “a partnership—one in which both sides work to reach an agreed- upon destination” (p.1). Cross insists that coaching involves mutual understanding where both sides come together for a shared goal. I think it is safe to say that the coach has several roles to perform; with the main objective being to develop the person being coached. This can be achieved by increasing self-confidence, identifying relevant and suitable topics for coaching as well as agreeing the setting of suitable planned tasks to support the learning process.
A coach or mentor can help to give guidance and support as challenges are faced, assisting staff in negotiating challenging situations with increased confidence.

I will inspire athletes to demonstrate good character. Sports do not have an influence on one’s character; however, coaches can strongly impact athletes’ character, both negatively and positively. Leadership and coaching go hand in hand in many ways because to coach is to lead, and to lead is to coach others. Indeed, leaders and coaches, whatever the title are really mentors within the context of a particular organization or activity. For centuries, scholars and philosophers alike have been trying to find a specific and complete definition for coaching and leadership, but have not had much success. True, leadership is, in part, decision making at the nth level; while coaching takes that decision making and often compartmentalizes it into split-second action (Rhodes, J., et al. 2000). Coaching is the art of facilitating another person’s learning, development and performance. Through coaching people are able to find their own solutions, develop their own skills and change their own behaviors and attitudes.
Upon successful completion of this project I will identify an existing problem of a team that I am a part of and I will act as team leader and develop a coaching plan to solve this problem. I will use my current place of employment as an example. As team leader, I will lead the resolution to the problem and build a more cohesive and productive team.
