In the 1930s two characters appeared in comic literature that became icons of pop culture. Batman and Superman are the golden boys of DC comics and are considered the most popular of all superheroes. Being around for over seventy years these two have acquired a near endless fan base of all ages. The two kings of comics have often been portrayed as allies, though they have different views on situations. The argument of who is truly the better hero has been around since their creation. To compare these two juggernauts we must look at their defining traits; origin of the hero, their alter egos, and of course their strengths and weaknesses.

Heroic heroes, Batman and Gilgamesh, perform numerous brave deeds. Before Bruce becomes Batman, he receives expert training from the League of Shadows high in the mountains where he learns how to disappear, face his fears, and become more than a man. In the Iliad, Achilles has the same concept of a special weapon, his armor. In both of Batman and Gilgamesh’s’ lives, they experience a tremendously traumatic event that changes their outlook on the world and life. Batman, Bruce Wayne, watches his parents be murdered in front of his own eyes as a young child and then blames himself for their death for his entire life, until he is taught to forget the past and make the future. He isn't super for his inhuman abilities or his capricious appearance, he isn't a true man for his strong build and his appealing features:  Superman is super because he's what everyone should aspire to be, and he is a man because he melds the world in a form of good and good only. This is despite the fact that he could basically be a god lording over others without much trouble, but instead chooses to serve and inspire. That is why he is a hero. Beowulf was a brave and strong hero. He feared nothing. Superman is much like Beowulf in this sense. Beowulf did not have super powers but he had no fear of death. He didn’t go out to fight demons for gold. He fought for glory. Superman was similar. He fought to protect. He did not want anything in return. The thing that makes these two men heroes is that they would lay down their life at any moment to save another. The both faced their “demons”. Superman, also known as Kal El, has shown many different powers since his first debut in 1938. This paper will discuss various topics about four of his major powers and explain why they are all impossible for anyone to achieve in real life. Superman’s four major powers that will be discussed in this paper are X-ray vision, being able to fly, super strength, and invulnerability. While Batman was still Bruce Wayne, his parents were killed by a soon to be supervillain, this caused him to have an alternative motive to become a “hero.” For example Captain America fight crime and serves the city for the people not for his own benefit. Batman might seem like he is doing what hero is supposed to do, but he is merely trying to avenge his parents death. “ Police are perplexed, worried the group will turn into vigilantes and doubt that the superhero policy is ever stopped any crime,” (source A). This is the same with Batman; the police do not know what to make of him but are worried that he will get himself in trouble. Batman might seem like he is doing things for others, yet he does them for himself.

He carried his victims to safety and used his body to stop a train. His powers were endless it seemed. There was one thing that could make Superman as weak as a baby. He would lose all his powers if someone brought Kryptonite near him. Superman worked alone.

The poet, David Meltzer once said: "Superman came not out of our strength but out of our vulnerability." Superman became a symbol of hope and a reassurance of safety. Superman represents the way America was supposed to be. He portrays someone who could save the lives of the innocent and yet be kind enough to spare the lives of the criminals; Someone who could've saved Siegel's father.

I believe Superman is the most tremendous DC Comics superhero out of all of them. First, he is a alien from a planet that has been destroyed. Saying that he is very comparable to The Doctor from Doctor Who, because there is only two of them left of their entire race. Both of these heroes never use violence. I say that because neither of them ever really kill anyone. Indefinitely they are really the best heroes in the end because nobody ever dies.

Now in these days everyone one likes to read comic books since they became part of our society. What makes them interesting is how entertaining they could get giving us different points of views on different stories of superheroes. Many of us believe that “Classic superheroes stories are wildly fun, suspenseful and exciting” (Tom and Matt Morris) forgetting the idea of what really makes a hero. Different perceptions of superheroes are considered based on their wrong actions and way of thinking.
