The Grizzly Reality of Trophy Hunting Trophy hunting is defined as the selective hunting of select species of hunting game for human recreation and not as a way to get food, even though parts of the animals may be consumed. The animal or part of it is kept as a trophy or proof of achievement. Trophy hunters have a code called the fair chase code, this code ensures that the hunter will give the animal they are hunting a fair chase and allow it to escape if the hunter does not have the skill required to kill the animal. By adopting this code the hunter also agrees to allowing the animal to use its senses in order to give the animal a fair chance at survival. The hunter also promises not to use illegal methods to hunt such as banned traps …show more content…
Another observation done by Bass is that the projected estimate of a population growth of 132 to 1,800 is just that an estimation. As Bass stated “ bears do not sit down for a census”(Bass 2). If grizzly bears are listed there is a chance that hunters will accidently over hunt bears once again. If bears bears are delisted it will not be because the bears will be ready it will be because hunters have been persistently asking for the chance to hunt. If bears are delisted it can be years before they can be relisted and by then it may be far too late. Hunters argue that if the Department of Fish and Wildlife declare the grizzly population stable then they should be allowed to hunt the bears. As of now the Department of Fish and Wildlife has declared the grizzly population stable at a nearly doubled population from that in the 70’s. As stated by a avid hunter “ If Yellowstone 's bear population falls precipitously after delisting, the federal government can come back in and declare the bears endangered again”. With positive support from the Department of Fish and Wildlife it seems grizzlies will soon be fair game. Grizzlies are not the only animals in danger of being hunted for trophies to the extent of possible extinction. In a study done by an organization called the Dodo they found that trophy
Hunting is a common activity all around the world, and if performed properly, can have many benefits to us and the rest of the planet. The art of hunting has been around since the beginning of time. Living off of the land used to be a necessity across the world, until the mass production of food came along. In America, people do not usually need to hunt to survive. However, the population of animal species needs to be controlled. Too many of one type of animal can cause a drastic change to any ecosystem. Food supplies decline quickly, leaving many animals without food. Hunting can help keep the population of a group of animals at a good number, making the lives of the other
This is because, one, simply put, in our modern day Society trophy hunting or hunting in general is not needed, to include endangered animals Within the game hunting will also affect their overall environment, and trophy hunting is overall an inhumane
The Grizzly Bear is one of nature’s last keystone species that is contributing to the Western United states and Southwestern Canada. The Grizzly Bear is thought of as a vicious beast who kills people without intent. Grizzly Bears are actually important to the environment and ecosystem that they live in. This Bear is an intelligent animal, which serves a role of preserving a plant’s way of life. It creates soil disturbance which causes more nitrogen to be produced to generate more nutrients for plants.
Today, Louisiana has made extraordinary rescues with species that were once considered threatened or endangered. Due to safe planning and the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service projected to remove the Louisiana Black Bear from the list of threatened species. In May 2015, approximately 350 black bears to 600 black bears existed in Northern Louisiana in which $900,000 was invested to restore its population. Severe habitat loss of the black bear is what initially led to the decline in the population. In 1992, the Louisiana Black Bear was placed on the list of endangered and threatened species and in May 2015, they were officially removed (Wildlife Division - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,
Hunting is a common controversial issue among people. Determining when killing an animal is necessary and ethical has mixed viewpoints. One type of hunting that generally creates feelings of animosity among people is trophy hunting. There are very few ethical theories and ideas that support trophy hunting. Trophy hunting is a form of hunting in which the hunter kills an animal with the main goal of taking a part or parts of that animal for a trophy. The majority of trophy hunting occurs in Africa, with big game as the most popular trophies, but trophy hunting also applies to non-exotic species as well. In this paper, I will start with introducing a recent incident involving the killing of a popular African lion, then outlining the main ethical issues with trophy hunting. Next I will analyze the trophy hunting from an anthropocentric, biocentric, and ecocentric viewpoint, and finally I will propose a few solutions that would make trophy hunting a more ethical activity. Trophy hunting has been said to provide many benefits to conservation and preservation of species but is ethically lacking; with some stronger laws and regulations trophy hunting has the potential to be both ethically acceptable and beneficial to the environment.
There are hunters all over the world that use the sport as more than just enjoyment and a goal to get a trophy. Over 200 million animals are killed every year from hunting for the purpose of food and land protection. Farmers who grow corn and vegetables need to kill animals that eat the precious
In 1974 bear estimates were between 300 and 400 bears, in 2002 just eight years later with the help of Central Florida Farmers Association approximately 132,000 acres were set aside for bear habitation. Due to these and the efforts groups like TreeHuggerofAmerica, Defender.org and the FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) the bear population started growing and growing and growing. From three to five hundred in 1974 to a little over three thousand in 2002. As of 2015 the current estimates are four thousand three hundred fifty bears and the amount of human / bear contact has
On the other hand, trophy hunting, which is “the selective hunting of animals for human recreation” , is a problem that can increase the risk of extinction. UK scientists confirm that hunters have the tendency to hunt the animal with the best genes. There is an intense discussion about the rightness of this activity because some argue
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service are considering removing the gray wolf from the endangered species list once Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming have enough wolves to be deemed sufficient to continue to expand the wolf population, requiring only that each of these three states have a management plan in effect to prevent the gray wolf from becoming endangered again. With the current attitude of the governments in these states, the wolf should not lose their federal support under the Endangered Species Act as it would merely serve to cause the wolves to become endangered once again, or at best, held to the absolute minimum population that the states can pass off as “viable, self-sustaining populations”
When you think of the word bear what comes to mind? Some people may possible think of Yogi the bear or Smoky the bear. However, society sets up a positive connotation for bears though in reality they are quite aggressive animals. Since this is a reality, New Jersey along with others states set up hunting seasons. The New Jersey bear hunt is in two different segments, A and B. Segment A is held within October fifth to the tenth and segment B is December fifth to the tenth. In 2015 there were 472 bears killed within segment A while, 38 were killed in segment B. The bear hunt in New Jersey is largely located in the northern counties. Bear hunting is a necessity in order to prevent the overpopulation of the species.
Transition: Although the Grizzlies population is growing this means that after the federal government takes the bears off of the endangered list in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming then these states will become responsible for monitoring the population
Natural law is a connection between the law and human mortality. Trophy hunting is an issue that has both sides of that trophy hunting is good, or trophy hunting is inhumane. The private pregnancy clinic also has two sides which are that pushing morals on a person to stop them from having an abortion is good, yet on the other hand, some people say that the lady has the right to choose on her own decision. The opinion that I will be arguing on both issues is that trophy hunting is not a humane thing to do, and abortion should not be something a person should be judged about.
Big game hunting is cause A major population damage . One of them is one of the most beloved animals in the world the Elephant. Every year, tens of thousands of elephants are being killed for trophies . Their population in Africa dropped from 62,000 all the way down to 20,000 in the last decade. WWF Global said they are due to be extinct in the next decade if nothing is done to stop the big game hunter. It’s not just Africa, where animals are being killed for trophies. ‘In Canada there is a breed of leopards called Amurs that were driven down to 10 left in the whole world ‘’ What caused this big game hunters from all over came to hunt an
Black bears in BC have a population that is 9 times that of the grizzlies, however, the results show that the grizzlies have inflicted 9.7 times more attacks on humans in the past 16 years. This goes to show that grizzly bears have a higher tendency to attack due to the natural factors and stresses that act on them cause them to be much more aggressive with less tolerance to threats (Herrero, Aspects of Evolution and Adaptation in American Black Bears (Ursus americanus Pallas) and Brown and Grizzly Bears (U. arctos Linne.) of North America n.d.). Many other papers such as Herrero’s study in both 1972 and 1985 showed the same results where grizzlies had higher rates of attacks compared to black bears in BC and so it clearly shows that there
Humans have been hunting on this planet for over two million years. Our ancestors used complex hunting techniques to ambush and kill antelopes, gazelles, and other large animals dated back to times before Christ. People all around the world still carry on the tradition, but the view on hunting is not the same as it was back then. The world is so industrialized, and people think hunting is cruel and useless because you can buy meat at grocery stores. But in reality, it is the reason the wildlife they see are not extinct. Harvesting game not only benefits the hunter with the meat, but also the land, the wildlife, and controls the game population; therefore, without it wildlife would starve, and land would not be managed.
