In this essay we explore the preparation of being a computer science major. Expanding from there this essay investigates a more broad aspect of what it takes to be a successful computer science major both in and out of college. The argument I make is that success comes from the professional development of computer science related skills. Simply put, this essay explains the best practices of learning experts and then applies them to compute science. The argument being that having a successful career in computer science comes down to learning highly desirable skills. Now diving into the details of actually doing well in computer science courses is Cal Newport, a computer science professor at Georgetown University, additionally he 's the author of five books, two on building a successful career, three on being a successful student. In his book, "How to Become a Straight-A Student" he argues that becoming a good student is a learned skill, and argues he has the toolbox for being a top student. Focusing on his advice for any technical subjects, that which involves math formulas or code. His strategy can be summed up as follows: Always go to class and take smart notes by typing as many thorough examples as possible. When it comes time to study for the exam, just combine all the problems into a "mega-problem set" and work through them one by one out-loud or in writing.
