Describe the teamwork required to operate Camphill Village. Hint: Refer to Exhibit 10-2 (Four Types of Teams) and pages 276-279 in your text book.
Camphill Village requires everyone to do their part for the village to run successfully. The volunteers are there to make sure that the residents who live there are taken care of and stay safe. The type of teamwork that is seen at Camphill Village is a cross functional team, with all the volunteers and the residents coming together to make the village work. A cross functional team is when employees/individuals from about the same hierarchical level, but from different work areas come together to accomplish a task (Robbins & Judge, 2015). The residents and volunteers come from different backgrounds and have different skills, this allows Camphill Village to run successfully.
What leadership, management, or mentoring roles are found at Camphill Village?
The leadership, management or mentoring roles found at Camphill Village include, the volunteers that live and work with the residents that are developmentally disabled. The volunteers are mentoring these adults that in the real world would not be given a chance because of their disabilities. At Camphill Village there are leaders that are considered to be employee-oriented leaders, meaning that they emphasize interpersonal relations by taking an interest in the employees’ needs and accepting individual differences among them (Robbin & Judge, 2015). This is shown with many of
I chose to interview Regina Geis, who holds the administrative role as acting supervisor for the County Mental Health adult day program, which provides services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is her first managerial position within a human service agency. Her style of management has changed over this short period of time. She feels that she is now more direct with her direction with staff. She stated, “Maybe now I come across as a little bit cold. But I have learned that I now have to use the least amount of words to get my point across.”
After her time at the habilitation program, she moved to Colorado. Her first job in Colorado was at the Rise School of Denver, which “provides services to children with and without disabilities through an inclusive education model.” During her time at the Rise School, the executive director of Adams Camp reached out to her and provided a job description that immediately captured her interest. She rapidly transitioned into the Adams Camp environment and found her home. Jordan has the opportunity to serve 350 families every year in both Adventure Camp and other therapeutic programs that is offered by Adams Camp. But, it hasn’t all been an easy road for her at Adams Camp. She voiced, “With an aging population, we are tasked with creating age appropriate services for all. The other challenge is finding more empowering opportunities for our population.” Most people with developmental disabilities can live a long and fulfilled life, but their special needs vary by age. At the moment, Adams Camp prioritizes younger clients in order to prepare them properly for their futures. But because Jordan is so dedicated to improving the lives’ of others, she
According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, most healthcare professionals are not trained to work in interprofessional teams.1 Due to this, it is negatively impacting the quality of care we give our patients. The lack of communication and respect for others is potentially putting the patient at harm. For example, test results are not being shared, other helpful opinions are not being heard, unnecessary costs are being added and trust is being lost. This is very surprising to me because every healthcare professional’s goal and focus should be on healing the patient. When collaboration with others is needed, it should be looked upon as equal as a treatment, a diagnosis and a test.
Teamwork is the product of two or more persons working together to accomplish a given goal. Take for instance the Egyptian Pyramids. If one man alone tried to plan and build these colossal monuments by himself, he would have failed miserably. However, when men bond together and put their efforts to work toward a common goal, they can
Tacachale Center is a community for adults with developmental disabilities. I learned about Tacachale from a classmate and was compelled to visit the community after learning about its mission to promote independence and the individual potential of the residents. As a volunteer, I did crafts with the residents and helped serve snacks. I learned from the staff that most residents were abandoned by their families and that visitors were not common. Although most of the residents are unable to clearly communicate, it is easy to realize how much they appreciate the volunteers and enjoy interacting with new people. Through this experience, I learned that I posses a strong interest in working with underserved populations. I am drawn to people that
In to the big companies with higher hierarchy cross-functional team members can benefit from mirroring structure. For instance, from different functions have each leader as VP of marketing, VP of finance and etc.On the other hand there should be one leader overseeing it all.
Through the service projects we do through Campus Civitan, I am learning about leadership in our communities. This group is a collegiate club through Civitan International whose focus is service to the developmentally disabled. Not only are we participating in community events, such as fundraising or putting together winter food baskets to donate, we are helping support a world class research center. As a member and officer I am able to participate directly and meet people that will help open doors so that I can be a better leader one day. Part of the funds that are raised go directly to the UAB Civitan International Research Center. This research facility is located directly on the campus of University of Alabama and focuses on brain disorders such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Epilepsy and many others (Civitan.org). In Birmingham there is also a treatment and therapy clinic where families can take their children who have developmental disabilities for care. This is also supported by Civitan. Civitan International is also the largest supporter of the Special Olympics every year. Civitan was founded in 1917 and was initially a service to help people in their own communities. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the mission focus changed to the emphasis of helping those with developmental disabilities. Civitan Research facilities and clubs are not just in the United States, but all over the world
A number of factors should be considered when aiming to achieve effective team performance, there are responsibilities individually and as a group which contribute to the success of high quality teamwork. As an organisation which provides a service to a large community of vulnerable adults it is essential that the team is managed appropriately; the efforts put in to the work is reflective of the service which the clients receive.

Good teamwork is essential in my setting but it needs a lot of conscious effort in order for the team to work at its best. Working in a team rather than just an individual has the potential to bring together all the skills experiences and disciplines required to support the service users. There are 11 main building areas:
The advice that I would provide to Laszio Bock about managing a cross-functional team is to ensure that everyone is aware that they all work toward one common goal. I would suggest that he works closely with team members and show compassion. Listening to team members and providing training when necessary will show that they are valued. Managing a cross-functional team may not be easy at times. When working with a group of individuals of different educational backgrounds or talents, conflict may arise. What happens when one team member does not see the viewpoint of another? A leader must be able to diffuse all issues. I would suggest that Laszio implements team building exercises in and outside of the workplace. Team building exercises force
Specifically, as a skills trainer I work one-on-one with developmentally disabled children in an in-home and community setting. As a direct skills professional, I also work one-on-one in a group home and community setting. Both as a Life Skills Trainer and Direct Support Professional for Mentor Oregon, my mission is to teach individual independence despite disabilities, intellectual or behavioral challenges (The Mentor Network, 2012). By teaching individuals independence despite disabilities, intellectual or behavioral challenges how to independently take better care of themselves, I am improving their quality of life (Wehmeyer & Schwartz, 1998), and lowering their health care cost. The personal and professional experiences I have underwent better prepare me for The Doctor of Behavioral Health: Management program at Arizona State
I am able to apply the concepts of teamwork to almost every aspect of my career field since my job requires me to fulfill numerous roles on a day-to-day basis. There are several different pieces to the whole puzzle of what it is be a US Air Force Captain, Special Forces Pilot, Aircraft Commander, Planner, and Chief Scheduler. Although according to my career field I am strictly a fighter pilot, you can see that there is much more involved, and that actually flying is only one of the many functions that someone in my position must fulfill.
Cross-functional teams have a solid understanding of what they are to accomplish and they also has a variety of specialties. One can gain trust through communication, support, respect, delegation, fairness, predictable and competence. Managers can build trust through communication by keeping team members and employees informed about policies and decisions that are accurate. Showing support to team members by being helpful, approachable and available is building trust. Trust can also be built by respecting authority decisions making. Also trust can be built by being fair, giving credit and recognition to those who deserve it. Another guide of trust is predictability in the arrangement of daily affairs. The competence guide of trust should
Team Building is essential to make the organization a better place to work. When we hear the term ‘Team Building’ we are drawn to the term ‘team’ and then what can be done to help them grow and improve. It inspires groups of employees to communicate through a series of planned events that are motivational as well as fun. These events can be used to determine strong points in the person’s personality, such as leadership skills, problem solving skills, etc. This can benefit the person by giving them job satisfaction and the opportunity to progress to their full potential. Team building is truly important as it also benefits the team as a whole. When employees of any company who rarely work together are allowed to communicate, they can discover that they enjoy the interaction and continue to bond with different people (from distinct fields) back at the office. Those employees who previously may not have been getting along with others will have to forget
