On September 18th of 2015, I decided to attend a court sentencing at the Alameda Superior Court in Oakland. The experience was very interesting and enlightening on how the court system works. While I was there I learned found out a few things about the cases that was being sentenced that I don’t think most people know or could have known without attending the sentencing. I felt like I left the the courthouse with a better idea and grasp on how to act and what to listen for in a sentencing.

On Friday, November 20, 2015, I witnessed the case against Thomas Adam L, charging the defendant with two counts of robbery in the second degree and one count of robbery in the third degree, heard by Hon. Thomas E. Moran in the Monroe Supreme & County Court Criminal Division. The case began around 9:30 am where both attorneys began calling witnesses to the stand to testify whether or not they knew Thomas and if the witness could make out the way he walked and decide whether or not the man in several video clips shown was Thomas. The video clips produced by the prosecutor were clips from Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGTA) showing multiple angles of the suspect in questioning walking by the bus towards

The first person I interviewed was Celeste Lashmett. Celeste was my high school track coach and had recently became a new parent in the last two years. AJ is two years and four months old right now. Celeste is currently living in Winchester Illinois with her husband Tim. Tim and Celeste have been married for the last five years. With AJ only being a little over two years old I would still consider them to be new parents. Tim works at Lincoln Land FS in Winchester and Celeste is the high school guidance counselor and also the high school track coach. The interview was done at the high school in Celeste’s office and Tim was not present.

People in the United States attend court every day for different many reasons. Those reasons could be for traffic violations, civil law suits, or for unlawful criminal acts. No matter what they are all handled and disputed in a court of law. Courts are empowered to make fair and binding decisions upon the facts that are received. There are two types of courts; civil court and criminal court. It is very important that people understand and know the differences between civil and criminal courts. On Friday, April, 4, 2014, I observed the Vanderburgh County Superior Court to observe different family law cases. The cases I heard involved contempt of court for failing to pay child support, failure to appear for a court appointed drug test, birth certificate affidavit, request for contest hearing time, and an issue of paternity case. Magistrate Judge Sheila M. Corcoran was presiding over the family court hearings. When entering the courthouse, I was greeted by security and advised to remove any cell phones, and/or, any other items that would trigger a metal detector. An initial appearance is the first contact with the judge that a person has after committing a crime where they are quickly reviewed on the charges being made against them, their bail options, constitutional rights among other court information. During the initial appearance, the judge provides the defendant with a criminal complaint copy. In the copy, the charge or charges are listed with the maximum probable penalty in case of conviction. It is also at the initial appearance that the judge makes the first likely cause determination. In other words, the judge scrutinizes the complaint to gauge whether if the claims made by the State surely confirm if the defendant committed the offenses that he is charged for. The judge also enlightens the defendant of his /her right to counsel, especially if he/she is not represented y an attorney. When a defendant is in charge with felonies, then the judge enlightens him/her preliminary hearing right (Lorch, 2010).

Although Eric and Laura are homogeneous in guilt and are both defensive, they are different in how they cope with their emotions. After the tragic event occurred, Eric and his wife were detached from one another. This led to the result of Eric confining in a woman whose name is Tracy Robichaud. Tracy, is married to a well known surgeon and mainly lives in Corpus; usually she and Eric would meet at her condo in Southport. “Tracy would drive in from Corpus and read the weekly Southport Sun in her breakfast nook until Eric’s truck appeared pm the street. For my observation, I chose to observe a civil case that had to do with a divorce. I did some research on the cases, and chose one that was similar to an experience I went through. My parents are currently separated, and my father simply refused to pay child support. He lives outside of the state, so it was hard for my mother to have face to face confrontation with him. She got tired of raising three kids on her own, and finally decided to take him to court. I was required to serve as a witness. This took place in 2009, so I was thirteen years old and didn’t really understand much of what was going on. I timidly walked to the stand and was sworn in. I then answered the questions the attorney asked me.

The defendant’s tardiness, as well as his demeanor-very nonchalant- in court, made him appear to be unconcerned with the fact that he was on trial. At one point I thought he was going to fall asleep. This definitely had an impact on his impression on the jurors as they did not seem happy with his behavior and neither was the judge.

So I went to the courtroom on Monday, I was planning to go to the criminal court but when I arrived I the GPS guided me to the civil court so I and two interpreter but I am so impress interpreter (Hannah) know everything I follow her where going to court criminal when I got there we have to go through the security and the building and I think because its not new and in a great condition like the civil court so when I got in I and interpreter went to the information desk get information about the court case that’s on, after that I went to a court room on the two floor department 26, the court room look same very different than my imagination I thought the court looks very old fashion with those European style decoration and uncomfortable seat like those in the church, but the court room I went to was actually very modern and the seat are soft not like the church style wooden seat, the court room was quite small I the it can only fit around few people according to my observation, so the judge sat at front and the jury is on the left and side and it has a small desk right next to the entrance for the police officer in the court and the judge ‘s seat and desk is high than any other seat and desk in the room. I and Interpreter sit back near door and I want thank to them note for me, I don 't understand court and lawyer was so fast speak but hard for me write notes then two interpreter willing notes share for me.
