Its political party, its citizens, its stance on race, and its involvement in a more digital world have all been changing since Georgia became occupied by the English. Georgia also changed its population make-up from mostly poor, white farmers and African American slaves to business people, teachers, media workers, and factory workers. Georgia has changed from being a state that was for segregation and Jim Crow laws to a state with a large population of African Americans working alongside the whites that is against racism. Since culture makes up such a large part of our day to day lives, it is almost always responsible shaping and informing our view on the world.

Therefore, the need to be culturally competent is paramount to fostering understanding. Cultural competency is about understanding another’s artifacts, beliefs, values and basic assumptions (Schein, 2010). Schein describes artifacts as the observable elements of a culture, such as ceremonies, non verbal cues, and language. He further describes, belief structures serve as guide posts and are useful in understanding a reason for a behavior. Finally, he states, assumptions are based on previous experience of what was and was not successful in the past for the individual or group. To me, I think the meaning of Cultural Awareness is to just be aware and respectful to others from different cultures who surround you. Rather than just ignoring all the different cultures and differences around you, you should be aware to gain more knowledge of your community or society. Cultural Sensitivity is similar to cultural awareness as Cultural Sensitivity builds upon the concept of Cultural Awareness. Cultural Sensitivity includes the awareness aspect and adds the concept of removing prejudice and assumptions, whether positive or negative. To me, I find that Cultural Sensitivity combines awareness with open-mindedness. When we are more respectful and open to learning about others around us we can become more Culturally Sensitive. In addition, Cultural Safety brings together both awareness and sensitivity by gaining and furthering knowledge, understanding, and respect for the other cultures surrounding you. Cultural Humility is the "ability to maintain an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented (or open to the other) in relation to aspects of cultural identity that are most important to the [person]" (Waters & Asbill, "CYF News | August 2013 Reflections on cultural humility", 2013). I am a resident of Augusta in Georgia State. The city is the second-largest in the state with a population of 197872 according to the 2012 census. Georgia State is the 24th largest and 8th most populous state in the United States. The Southern State is multi-racial, composed of 59.7% White, 30.5% Blacks and 0.3% American Indians. It was historically composed of half black population who were exclusively slaves. According to economic surveys conducted between 2007 and 2008, fourteen countries from the State were ranked among the nation’s 100 fastest growing. It borders Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina.

It was once primarily a farm state, producing large amounts of cotton, but has since become a major manufacturing and service industry state. Georgia is named for George II of England. Being culturally aware allows you gain more insight and increases your knowledge on the way of life in other countries. Spencer-Oatey (2012) suggested that, Culture is customs, ideas and social behaviour of a particular people or society. Moreover, culture is also defined by arts, and other manifestation of human intellectual achievement (Spencer-Oatey, 2012). Therefore, culture covers broad areas in our society, and culture plays an important role of development of individual’s self-awareness. Cultural self-awareness is gained from birth by developing knowledge by experience, outcome, and the behaviour that seem to form the cultural self-awareness of individuals and makes the whole culture.
