The Importance Of Extracurricular Activities

Do students in school ever get overwhelmed with school work? Over time, schools have developed extracurricular activities, such as sports, clubs, academies, and so on. These activities are not a part of school curriculum, but it is part of the educational experience for students because of the benefits they have. In an article, “International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Invention,” the author states that “Adolescents have a significant amount of free time available to them and research demonstrates that they are increasingly capable of self-directed actions in their search for identity”(Annu and Sunita). These activities increase grades by allowing the students to take a time out, allowing the brain to relax and regenerate, but also gives students a chance to stay on top of things. Keeping grades at a level of quality while also being involved in the student’s own interests attracts “Colleges to look at academic performances as well as a student’s involvement on campus or in the community” (“Extracurricular Activities”). For college applicants, it is important for students to be involved in activities outside of school, so colleges look at who was involved in activities such as clubs, sports (outside and in school), leadership or ASB, yearbook, and much more. College’s do this so that they know what type of student they are bringing onto their campus. For this reason, during high school, being involved is important for colleges to evaluate what kind of student they are. Not only do students involvement in extracurricular activities catch college’s attention, but “the reason colleges and universities benefited from this competition between one another because it constantly pushed them to strive to have better academics, higher student retention and graduation rates, and to always be aiming for higher college ranking, program ranking, etc” (Jansen). Additionally, students who take AP courses, honors, advanced classes, etc. have a higher chance at succeeding at getting scholarships for colleges due to the effort they have put into taking their education to
