Do students in school ever get overwhelmed with school work? Over time, schools have developed extracurricular activities, such as sports, clubs, academies, and so on. These activities are not a part of school curriculum, but it is part of the educational experience for students because of the benefits they have. In an article, “International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Invention,” the author states that “Adolescents have a significant amount of free time available to them and research demonstrates that they are increasingly capable of self-directed actions in their search for identity”(Annu and Sunita). These activities increase grades by allowing the students to take a time out, allowing the brain to relax and regenerate, but also gives students a chance to stay on top of things. Keeping grades at a level of quality while also being involved in the student’s own interests attracts “Colleges to look at academic performances as well as a student’s involvement on campus or in the community” (“Extracurricular Activities”). For college applicants, it is important for students to be involved in activities outside of school, so colleges look at who was involved in activities such as clubs, sports (outside and in school), leadership or ASB, yearbook, and much more. College’s do this so that they know what type of student they are bringing onto their campus. For this reason, during high school, being involved is important for colleges to evaluate what kind of student they are. Not only do students involvement in extracurricular activities catch college’s attention, but “the reason colleges and universities benefited from this competition between one another because it constantly pushed them to strive to have better academics, higher student retention and graduation rates, and to always be aiming for higher college ranking, program ranking, etc” (Jansen). When students participate in extracurricular activities they learn lessons and concepts of leadership, teamwork, organization, analytical thinking, problem solving, and time management. In high school if a student wants to do a sport or other activity they will pick the activity that they like and enjoy. This is the kind of decision making skill that could help determine the type of career path for a student. By participating in extracurricular activities youth can find something they enjoy learn to use this in a career. “Participating in certain extracurricular activities having to do with the field that the student is interested in could help them find a job. If someone is looking at a resume for a potential employee, and they see they have experience or interest in what they are looking for, they will be more likely to hire that person” (Massoni). Having been apart of a particular extracurricular activity can be a positive influence in a job resume. This will cause students to find a new ambition in a career. I am a politically engaged student at Somers High School, and am writing to you with the request that funding for extracurricular activities be included as a part of school funding in the state budget. Currently, much of the money used by school districts across Connecticut is acquired from individual town budgets, but the state of Connecticut also provides funding in the form of grants to schools. At the start of this past fiscal year, the Somers Public School district was facing severe budget cuts, which would have resulted in reduced funding for extracurricular activities and staff reductions (Czapla, “Ask the Superintendent”). Luckily, a budget was passed that provided the school with enough funding to cover expenses for extracurriculars, which serve as an important part of the school environment. For all intents and purposes, extracurricular activities include sports, art programs, clubs, and school organizations. It is important for the state to implement proactive agendas that will result in positive benefits to Connecticut’s youth. It is imperative that funding for school extracurricular activities be increased, as they serve to build tomorrow’s leaders, introduce careers to students, and motivate students to obtain higher grades.
Some students in in Anaheim schools aren't involved in extracurricular activities. These students aren't receiving the benefits that being a part of an extracurricular has to offer. An extracurricular activity helps students with responsibility and time management. In order to be successful in Anaheim Schools students need to join an extracurricular activity and get support from their parents. In the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom by Marilyn Agrelo its states “The key to success in life is to find something you love and do it well”(Agrelo). Once you find something you love to do, you can use it to your benefit in order to succeed in your education. For example in the Mad Hot Ballroom documentary the students love to dance, and with the The ability to succeed in school can be achieved in a variety of ways. Success can be obtained if student are willing to put in effort and follow a path to success. The research conducted was the methods teachers or school used to improve student success in education. Therefore Anaheim schools can improve student success if the following changes take place: schools are to have a mandatory after-school study class, schools and parents promote a growth mindset, endorse student to join extracurricular activities.
Most of the homework adolescents tend to receive from their teachers is busy work, and children and family agree this is not fair to them. This issue is affecting adolescents, parents, and families. When students are overloaded with responsibilities from schoolwork, their participation in extracurricular and social activities decreases. An argument over homework might seem trivial, but there are many negative effects on children who are attending school and go through this pressure.
In school students getting good grades will help them get into better colleges. Yes, colleges do look for well-rounded students, but the first things that colleges look at are the gpa and standardized test scores. The colleges look at those things to see how well students learn and adapt to each class. Colleges know that each teacher has their own style of teaching, and each student has their own way of learning the material. So, the college wants to see if the student can adjust to each teacher and learn that material. If the student is able to adjust to the teacher and succeed in the class, the higher the grades will be. The higher the grades are, the better the chance of getting into a nicer college. If students get into a better college, there are more opportunities at hand, more opportunities for the student to succeed. Students should always follow their passions but in reality, only seven percent of high school athletes move on to college athletics. And, only two percent of all high school athletes go on to play in Division I athletics (Scholarship Stats). To conclude, students should uphold a B average or better to participate in after school activities because the better grades one has, the more opportunities they get from colleges. bove is a screen capture of my acceptance letter into successfully switching from the recreation management program into strictly the program of management. This is very significant to me as it is confirmation that my hard work has allowed me to start the fall semester of 2016 in the program that I feel I am aligned with the most. In the management program, I am able to continue working hard to help me succeed in my future studies.
Extracurricular activities have shaped who I am today. Every activity that I participate in represents a social group whose members share a common goal that binds us in a special way. The shared goal enables a joint discovery of values and attitudes while building life skills that is required to be successful in all walks of life. Outside of classes, I have made a conscious effort to improve my knowledge and develop skills by participating in community services, student government, internships, professional development conferences and workshops, cultural activities, athletics, school club activities and by taking advanced community college coursework.
College is not just about receiving good grades. It is just as valuable for students to get involved in student support programs and extracurricular activities such as internships, community involvement and leaderships. The reason why it 's important for students to get involved is so they can apply what they learn in the classroom into practice, gain social skills, develop leadership skills and learn time management skills. Moreover, what make it more respected is the skills gained from extracurricular activities and student support programs such as networking, mentorships and experiential learning that help prepare students for the work force.
Extracurricular activities have helped develop a person 's health socially. With several jobs and everyday activities require some form of being able to socialize with other people. "Moreover, they learn sharing and caring, all at once" (Reddy). At a young age, we encourage children to share and care about other children and people. The extracurricular activities are helping older students, who didn 't learn that as a child, to share and create a bond between people. "If students are not actively involved in extracurricular programs, they are not in a position to take advantage of the educational and social benefits those programs have to offer" (Vinoski). Without extracurricular activities, students are forced to socialize with their peers at school or at work and those may not be the best relationships. Principals have a lot of responsibilities. They are responsible for taking care of their school and students' well being. Students also have a lot of responsibilities. They have to learn and remember information, keep up with all of their classes, and pile in their homework after everything. Why add onto everyone's responsibilities? Making extracurricular activities mandatory will not take any pressure off of a principal or their students. I disagree that it should be mandatory for students to participate in extracurricular activities.
So why are extracurricular activities important? Extracurricular activities shape how a person acts within him or herself, in the community, and their performance in school. Schools should highly encourage every student to be in some type of activity (Hollrah).
Most of my childhood was dominated by a variety of extracurriculars. My first activity that I did was violin back at the age of 6 or 7. As an energetic child eager to get out and enjoy the afternoon, I extremely detested playing the violin. My mom insisted on me practicing it standing up and for at least an hour everyday. After a few years practicing that, I moved on to Tae Kwon Do. I actually did enjoy practicing the martial art but it did not suit my taste. After another few years of that, we came upon middle school. There, I applied myself and started to look for activities and extracurriculars that I enjoyed. I joined the school band as a saxophone player, but as it turns out, I am not the best at that either.
Try to remember your first day at school. Generally, teachers cannot even remember the name of any one of their students. Now, how exactly are they supposed to remember all of their 120 students’ personal lives? Contrary to that belief, most students believe that teachers should account for their extracurricular activities and personal lives. But, not only is that not possible, it is not plausible. Obviously, for students, keeping up with their work and personal lives is a hard task to manage, but developing their time management skills is something each student will need to learn to do as they continue their studies in college. Teachers should not have to plan their curriculum around student responsibilities due to the numerous types of jobs and extracurricular activities students take part in.
In high school there are extracurricular activities and clubs that educators and parents feel offer many benefits to students. In contrary to this I do not believe that the school should make students participate in afterschool activities against their will. Reasonings for this are: Many students have work outside of school and have no time, Many students play sports which is already considered an extracurricular activity, some students will resent extracurricular if they are forced to participate in them. On the other hand, colleges require a well-rounded student who has taken extracurriculars.
