• Master the story
• Promote positive behavior
• Achieve Rapport
• Control your response
• Take perspective
The ability to effectively communicate with others is a process. Building the right process is the key to successful communication (Fitch, B. 2016). Interpersonal communication skills or the lack of these skills were evident in a Brownwood Police Department call for service several years ago. On July 2, 2010 at approximately 10 P.M. a citizen called into the Brownwood Communication 911 Center advising that a family member was armed with a knife and threatening others. I and two other officers responded to the call. On arrival we observed that a male was standing in his kitchen holding a large knife to his chest. He had already injured one family member and was inside the residence by himself threatening suicide. The two other officers and I all had our guns drawn with one officer ordering the male to drop the knife. The subject continued to refuse and became more agitated and began screaming. I began coordinating less lethal options of force over the radio

This was a very short semester, but I did learn quite a few things. The chapters I was more interested on were 4-6. Chapter 4 dealt with communication skills which are a very important aspect in Law Enforcement without it we would be lost. Communication is the simple process of which information is transferred from one person to another. (Hess & Orthmann, 2012, pg. 103) Some people excel at it because they were born being very sociable, others have a hard time trying to get that message to others. Practice can fix this problem over time, so there won’t be any barriers or problems getting that message send in time to get the proper help fast. Next it was Chapter 5 this chapter described all the decision-making strategies, and problem-solving

I once believed the police and fire departments, court, correction, and social services to be independent entities that provided communities with individual services that sometimes complimented one another by the basic interchanging of information and services. Through this module, I have learned these entities are a very complex and although independent rely on inter-connectivity and communication comprise the criminal justice system. These entities share a common goal to uphold the law and maintain justice in our society (Silver, S. 2011. CJ in the USA an introduction to Criminal Justice. (1st ed., p. 1). The criminal justice system is divided into four major pillars. Within the pillars many divers jobs and skill sets come together to achieve this goal (Johnson, K. (2010). Jobs in criminal justice. Oceanside: Channel Custom Publishing, Oceanside,CA. Available from http://ct2learn.com/els/index.php/member-home/cj/imods/jobs-cj/imod/).
Communication is a vital tool in our society today because police officers could not serve the public effectively without good communication skills. A lack of the ability to listen or to speak effectively could result in a misunderstanding. Communication plays a very important role in the lives and jobs of police officers. Communication allows officers the ability to better manage evidence by interrogating witnesses and suspects and gathering information. This allows them to make quick and informed decisions. Police officers can only succeed if they master communication, both social and professional, so that they can be comfortable with the public and get their jobs done behind the scenes.
Over the past few years, there has been a great divide in our society between that of law enforcement agencies and some local community’s members that have placed fault onto on the law enforcement community (Abegbile, 2017). We have seen from the local communities not just cries for change in our law enforcement community, but have also protested in cities across the United States. With demands for criminal justice reform being demanded by such of an outcry in our society, we must evaluate the issues that are at the forefront of these matters (Abegbile, 2017). Our law enforcement community has over the past few years had to assess its leadership, the use of force by law enforcement officers, and to improving public safety.

Chadd would not listen to Officer requests for him to exit the bathroom. I went outside and looked through a window into the bathroom. I could see Chadd standing and talking on the phone to someone. Shortly afterward, Chadd set the phone down, grabbed a razor blade and started to cut one of his wrists. I then ordered officers to forcibly make entry into the bathroom and
